文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了懊悔的类型和应对方法。

1 . Regret refers to a feeling of sadness about something wrong or about a mistake that you have made, and a wish that it could have been different and better.     1     Experts say they come in four basic varieties: connection regrets, moral regrets, foundation regrets and boldness regrets. An instance of regret may involve just one or a combination.

2     Regret is linked with depression and anxiety, and excessive regret can adversely affect your hormones and immune system. For some, it’s anathema to sleep.

To truly get over our regret requires that we put it in its proper place. The trick is not to avoid the bad feeling; it’s to acknowledge it and use it for learning and improvement.     3     We have to seek them out on purpose to improve ourselves. Here are things you may find helpful the next time your are indulged in regrets.

4     This suggests that regret is like a ghost: not entirely clear but always frightening. Bring your ghost out of the shadows by making a list of your regrets. Write down why each one still bothers you and its lingering bad effects. You will find that a list is a lot less dreadful than a ghost.

After you make a mistake, life moves on. But sometimes you just can’t stop kicking yourself. Perhaps you dropped out of school decades ago and are constantly calculating today how much money you would be making, had you pressed on to graduation.     5

Life is a journey full of pleasures and pains. To live it well and fully means learning from every bit of it, including regrets, and moving forward.

A.Not all regrets are the same, of course
B.People often say their regrets chase after them.
C.Regret’s benefits don’t come to us by chance.
D.Never waste another minute of life reliving a decision that cannot be changed.
E.Some take the declaration a step further and claim that they have no regrets at all.
F.Unanalyzed and unmanaged, any variety of regrets can be poison for your health.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was in 7th grade when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was very sudden and unexpected for our family and obviously I was beaten. I tried my best to balance my first year of middle school and my home life, even if I knew this was impossible. I hated coming home from school every day for fear of what I would see when I got home. I hated seeing my mom sick all the time; she was not herself and all I wanted was for her to stop treatment and get better. Luckily, I had lots of support from my family, friends, and teachers during this hard time to help get me through it.

At the beginning of the year, I was determined to stay on track with my homework and studying and get through my first year at middle school successfully. Slowly, I started to become more distracted while at home with taking care of my mom, cleaning the house and helping my grandma cook our meals. While I was at school, I could escape and put my mom’s sickness in the back of my mind while I hung out with my friends and enjoyed playing. I noticed that my quiz and test grades were increasingly getting worse, but I never brought this to the attention of my mom because I did not want to worry her. Eventually, all of my grades were lower than C’s.

I knew that I was not doing well at school, and I needed to get my grades back up. I knew that a lot of my teachers were cutting me some unimportant work because they knew what was happening at home. Ms. Zazoski, my English teacher was the most supportive teacher that I have ever had and I am so glad that I was in her class that year.

4 . Nostalgia (怀旧) has become increasingly common in our current climate of accelerated, unexpected change. More and more Americans are turning back with longing to what feels like simpler, sweeter times. They collect cassette tapes, manual typewriters even decades-old video games.

Is it a mistake to get too obsessed with the past? Some psychologists warn that too much devotion to the so-called good old days is an escape from reality; it can indicate loneliness or that a person is having a difficult time coping in the present. Psychologist Stephanie Coontz argues that nostalgia distracts us from addressing the problems of modern life and contribute to anxiety, depression , insomnia etc.

But new studies suggest that a modest dose of nostalgia is not only harmless, but actually beneficial. They suggest it helps strengthen our sense of identity and makes us feel more optimistic and inspired. It is also a tool for self — discovery and memories are a psychological immune response that is triggered when you want to take a break from negativity. Interestingly, those happy memories can be particularly beneficial both to kids in their teens and to society's elders. Recalling our childhood reminds us of “the times when we were accepted and loved unconditionally," says Krystine Batcho, a psychologist. "That is such a powerfully comforting phenomenon, knowing that there was a time in life when we didn't have to earn our love." Nostalgia can transform even the most ordinary past into legends which warms the heart and the body. Let's not forget that nostalgia has been a source of inspiration to innumerable American writers. Mark Twain recalled his boyhood, writing, "after all these years, I can picture that old time to myself now, just as it was then: The white town drowsing in the sunshine of a summer's morning."

So go ahead, daydream a little about your best childhood friend, your first car, a long - gone family pct. As Dr. Sedikides says, "Nostalgia is absolutely central to human experience. "But at the same time, keep these words of wisdom from the great inventor Charles Kettering in mind as well: "You can't have a better tomorrow if you are thinking about yesterday all the time. "
