With his wrinkled fingers, Wang Qiming put traditional makeup on the faces of young performers before dawn, making final preparations for the shehuo parade (游行庆祝).

The shehuo parade, a time-honored performance enjoying widespread    1    (popular) in rural areas across China,    2    (date) back to about 2, 000 years ago when sacrificial (祭祀的) activities were performed to pray for a good harvest. Later on, as dancing and singing became part of the parade, it developed into a folk custom    3    (stage) during the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival    4    (remove) bad luck and bring a fresh start in the new year.

Wangmazui is in Longxian county,    5    (previous) known as Long Zhou, which is famous for shehuo parades    6    (feature) authentic performances and simple yet delicate facial makeup. The county was named the hometown of shehuo performances by the Chinese Folk Literature and Art Association in 2013.

More than 100 shehuo festivities are held in Longxian every year, each of    7     involves dozens or hundreds of villagers. Participants usually perform on horses     8    pickup trucks, showing different performances including stilt (高跷) dances and land boats.

Wang, 65, has clear    9    (memory) of the annual performances when he was a child. “My family has been engaged in shehuo performances     10    generations, ” he said. “I started to watch the show in my childhood, and now I joined them by making face-painting. ”

To celebrate the Lantern Festival the Palace Museum organized its first light show in the Forbidden City.

The complex, home to Chinese emperors for five     1    (century), was opened at night for the first time in 94 years. It was lit up with giant red lanterns and projections of ancient paintings. Masterpieces such as Along the River During the Qingming Festival were projected on the roofs, giving visitors a feeling like walking     2     time. The design team smartly combined high technology    3    (light) with the principles of cultural relic preservation.

Only 3, 000 people     4    (allow) in on that day: 500 people who booked their tickets online, and 2, 500    5    (invite) guests including model workers, officers, soldiers, and ambassadors.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has praised a group of middle school students for their efforts in satellite design. He said he was pleased with their curiosity and bravery in       1       (science) exploration. The president also wished the teachers and students in Bayi School     2     happy new year.

Xi made the praise in a letter     3       (write) to the students in Beijing’s Bayi School on Saturday. A small satellite designed and developed by them     4       (send) into space last Wednesday at Taiyuan Satellite Launch (发射) Center     5     it was designed to operate in orbit (轨道) for 180 days.

Three months ago, Xi returned to his high school, to visit a laboratory and talk to teachers and students     6     were designing the small satellite.
