8 . Unlike many other Europeans, the French are not noted for their eagerness to work long hours. The British are surprised by the French readiness to rest from work not only on Sunday but also on Monday afternoons. The Germans and the Swiss are less innocent but, nevertheless, are scornful(鄙夷的)of the fact that the whole of France appears to shut down for three weeks in August so that French citizens can rush to the cote d’Azur (a tourist attraction in France) and squeeze together on the narrow area of Mediterranean beach for vacation. Consequently, most of Northern Europe dismisses France as a lazy nation.
Annually, the 14th of July marks the start of what the French call “the great escape.” July 14th is Bastille Day, the celebration of a 1790 attempt to make French political prisoners free, which marked the beginning of modern France, and it was for this reason that, in 1880, Bastille Day was named a national holiday.
The center of the celebration is the Champs-Élysées(香榭丽舍大街)in Paris. An enormous tricolor French flag hangs from the Arc de Triomphe(凯旋门). The broad avenue itself is lined with flags of blue, white, and red. With great pomp(盛况), the President of France progresses along the Champs-Elysées, which is lined with police officers and applauding Parisians. He receives the greeting of the largest military parade in Europe. In the most modern of these displays of power, planes fly low over the cheering crowds.
Later, the president meets with the media and talks informally about what had been achieved in the previous year, how France stands presently, and how she will advance. Bastille Day ends with concerts and parties and, of course, a huge fireworks display centered on the Eiffel Tower. The streets are crowed and alive with people calling out to one another, gossiping, laughing, and partying in being French.

My best friend Lily and I met in high school. Ever since then, we had spent New Year’s Eve together. We’d watch together on TV the New Year celebration in Times Square, a the world-renowned tradition for millions to welcome the new year. Every year, thousands of people will gather in Times Square New York in person on New Year’s Eve counting down to the new year, with celebrations and performances after midnight. And we’d always say that one day we should go there ourselves.
Then we both went to college. Struggling through exams and schoolwork, we had little time to meet up. We missed each other terribly and decided it was time: to finally go to New York ourselves, to be present at the New Year’s celebration, and to do something fun together.
We worked out our schedule, bought tickets for everything and, most importantly, planned how to survive the long hours of waiting in the biting cold before the celebration — we wanted the best spot possible, and there’s only so much space, so we had no choice but to get to the Time Square early.
When the big day finally arrived, it became snowy and colder than any cold we had ever experienced. Actually it was one of the coldest New Year’s Eves on record. Everyone thought we were going to back out.
But we didn’t. We didn’t make it that far to back out.
We woke up and set off early. And, of course, we did freeze along the way, but we kept cheering each other up. Once we got there, we found our way to the line pretty quickly, considering everyone else was pushing their way in the same direction. We got in line and waited to finally get into our area in the Time Square, which thankfully was pretty spacious and close to the stage.
Halfway through the day, my friend and I couldn’t feel our toes.

10 . Just then, Senora Ines arrived and asked Rosaura if she wouldn't mind helping serve out the hot dogs, as she knew the house so much better than the others.
“See?” said Rosaura to the girl with a bow, and when no one was looking she kicked her in the shin (胫骨).
Apart from the girl with a bow, all the others were delightful. The one she liked best was Luciana, with her golden birthday crown, and then the boys. Rosaura won the sack race, and nobody managed to catch her when they played tag. When they split into two teams to play charades, all the boys wanted her for their side. Rosaura felt she had never been so happy in her life.
The best came after Luciana blew out the candles. First the cake. Senora Ines had asked her to help pass the cake around, and Rosaura had enjoyed the task very much because everyone called out to her, shouting “Me, me!” Rosaura remembered a story in which there was a queen who had the power of life or death over her subjects. She had always loved that, having the power of life or death. To Luciana and the boys she gave the largest pieces, and to the girl with a bow she gave a piece so thin one could see through it.
After the cake came the magician. A true magician, he could untie handkerchiefs by blowing on them and make a chain with links that had no openings. He could guess what cards were pulled out from a pack and a monkey was his assistant. He called the monkey "partner".
The final trick was wonderful. One of the children had to hold the monkey in his arms and the magician said he would make the monkey disappear.
Rosaura thought that this was truly the most amusing party in the whole world.
