Puppies for Sale
A little boy lived in a small town of Northern California called Oxnard. He was a lovely boy but he lost his left leg in a car accident and had to walk by a false leg (假肢). He couldn’t follow other kids. He felt lonely and decided to keep a pet dog as his friend.
One day, he walked past a pet shop and saw a sign above the door that said: “Puppies for Sale”. The little boy asked the shop owner, “I want to buy one of your puppies. Can I please look at the puppies?”
The pet shop owner got impressed with the honesty of the boy. “Sure,” said the shop owner. He smiled and whistled loudly. Five puppies ran down the walkway of the pet shop.
The little boy’s eyes danced with pleasure. As the puppies made their way towards the fence, the little boy noticed that one puppy was falling behind. This puppy was limping (跛行) and trying its best to catch up the others.
Immediately the little boy pointed out towards the limping puppy and asked, “What’s wrong with that little puppy?” The shop owner explained that when the puppy was born the pet hospital had examined the little puppy and had discovered there was something wrong with its back leg. It would limp for the rest of his life.
The little boy got really excited and said “That is the puppy that I want to buy.” The shop owner replied, “No, that puppy is not for sale. Nobody will buy that puppy due to his disabled leg. If you really want him, I’ll just give him to you for free.”

9 . One day, Herbie Mensah was looking at the clothes piled (堆放) in the cupboard under the stairs. He realised he couldn’t send them to landfill (垃圾埋地). “They were good-quality, designer labels. But they had holes. I thought: ‘Experiment. Do something different.’” Mensah says.
He set about his collection of clothing with scissors. He finished one piece and took it to the market. It sold. “You think: ‘This is interesting.’ Next thing. I was getting orders. My kitchen became my studio,” he says.
That was 18 months ago, when Mensah was 62. Now he rents a studio near his home in Kensal Green, northwest London, and sells his creations through his website. Sometimes Mensah stays up all night. “I can work for 24 hours and it will feel like five minutes,” he says.
Mensah’s connection with fashion is a long story. One evening in the early 1980s, after he’d been shopping, Mensah didn’t feel like going home. He arrived at a club on Bond Street, before it opened. Two men were already waiting, one of whom happened to be Michael Collins, the manager of Vivienne Westwood, a British fashion label. They all went for a burger. “Collins asked me if I was interested in doing a fashion show for Vivienne Westwood,” Mensah says. “I said: ‘Yeah, great.’ not thinking anything of it. A few days after the show, Westwood rang. She asked if I wanted to do a show in Paris. From being one of those boys hanging around on street corners, I was flying around the world modelling.”
When the modelling work began to dry up in the 1990s, he took a voluntary role with a housing association. That was his life for more than 20 years, but fashion never went away. Upcycling has taken his love of fashion to a different place. “Working creatively is like a breath of fresh air,” he says. “That keeps you going and alive.”
