文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了新型冠状病毒流行病以来,人们沉迷于网上购物,说明了这种现象产生的原因并给出了建议。

2 . Covid has made online shopping addicts of us all

Impulse-buy moments can happen to anyone. Since the pandemic began, I have received a stream of requests for advice on how to curb (抑制) shopping compulsions. Despite rising unemployment and economic struggles, online spending keeps breaking records.

1     And since coronavirus, these are precisely the predominant emotions many have experienced. When lockdowns restricted activities that maintain wellbeing, such as dinner with friends, travel or a trip to the local swimming pool, many turned to their internet browsers for refuge.

Shopping can provide an escape into wished-for realities, distraction from uncomfortable feelings, and a sense of having control over aspects of our lives that, ultimately, may not be controllable.     2     The problem, of course, is that dopamine highs wear off, prompting a need to re-dose.

Psychologists have identified a human tendency to turn to objects to help compensate for unmet needs. This starts in the cradle, with babies reaching for their favourite stuffed toys in order to ease the anxiety that arises from their parents' absence at bedtime. Turning to products for emotional comfort doesn’t stop after childhood. Shopping addictions are most likely to occur when feelings of depression and anxiety become more lasting. So as the pandemic drags on, shopping addictions risk occurring in increasingly more of us. Buying products as a way of feeling more empowered or to escape from uncomfortable feelings can result in guilt due to over-splurging. This increased discomfort can, in turn, intensify the urge to shop.     3     At the same time, efforts to manipulate and accelerate consumers’ online buying behaviour has expanded and grown more sophisticated.

If since Covid-19 arrived you have shopped more than usual, and want to stop, here is a suggestion.     4     Do you really want a new sweater, or a sports toy for your child? Step away from the computer. It could be that what you are searching for is more connection, excitement, normalcy and joy.

A.The next time you find yourself browsing online for a sudden must-have thing, take a moment to reflect on what you truly need.
B.This web-based activity may dip as shops often back up, and people feel comfortable in them again.
C.While there are many reasons why people shop, boredom, loneliness, depression and anxiety are the most common precursors to shopping on impulse.
D.The modern ability to command products to our doorsteps with the wave of a finger makes resisting these emotion-driven impulses even harder.
E.The next step is the tracking of users’ emotional states in real time through voice, gesture, facial expressions and movements.
F.Like drugs, food and alcohol, shopping stimulates an increase in dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps lift mood and temporarily numbs us to negative emotions.

3 . Credit cards

However you view credit card, it’s hard to live in the modern world without one. And if you have one, you owe it to yourself to use it properly.

Although credit cards are becoming a more acceptable part of the financial scene, they are still regarded with suspicion by many as being a major part of the “live now pay later” syndrome(综合症).     1     They can allow you to pile up debts that you have difficulty paying off; they can also let you spend next month’s salary today. Of course, it is only the foolish who give in to the temptation to live temporarily at least beyond their means, and such people would no doubt manage to do so even without credit cards.

Advertising campaigns have, however, promoted a growing realization of the advantages of these small pieces f plastics. They avoid the need to carry large amounts of cash and are always useful in emergencies. All the credit card organizations charge interest on a monthly basis.     2     Using a card abroad where items frequently take a long time to be included on your account can extend this period even further.

3     It is necessary to consider the amount of credit granted and interest rates, which may vary slightly. And of course, what happens if your card is lost or stolen? A credit card chief may be sitting on a potential gold mine particularly if there is delay in reporting the loss of the card.

Using a credit card wisely takes discipline and a little self-control. Once you realize your debt is someone else’s profit margin, your approach to your plastic will change. With a bit of discipline and some practical knowledge, you can make your cards work for you, rather than the other way round.     4

A.The cardholder must pay a defined minimum position of the amount owed by a due date, or may choose to pay a higher amount.
B.It is worthwhile shopping around before deciding on a particular credit card.
C.They provide encouragement to spend more money.
D.In other words, they combine payment services with extensions of credit.
E.As a matter of fact, a credit card can cost noting or at least help you through a period of financial difficulty.
F.Yet wise purchasing using a card can mean you obtain up to seven weeks’ interest-free credit.

Natural perfume or artificial perfume?

The use of perfume dates back to earliest times. The ancient Egyptians perfumed the bricks used to build their houses and temples, and wore perfumed fat in their hair.

These days, consumer demand for perfumed products is intense. In the home, from washing-up liquid to paper tissues, soap to shoe polish, fragrance is the common ingredient. Artificial leather is perfumed to make it smell like the real thing, and in Japan, some companies spray perfume through building’s air-conditioning system at key times of the working day.

To meet the demands of the perfume industry, scientific developments have made the companies use substitutes for some natural ingredients. Scientists have also discovered that natural and artificial materials are highly complementary and are acceptable to the consumer. Even the most expensive perfumes are in fact compounds of both natural and artificial ingredients. The French perfume manufacturers were among the first to blend artificial compound when they made the famous perfume Chanel No. 5 in 1923.

Producing natural oils is very expensive. For example, 1000 kilos of jasmine flowers make just one kilo of extract. Using artificial fragrance has reduced the costs of manufacture overall, although the chemical operations involved can be very time-consuming and costly-sixteen or seventeen chemical separations may be needed to produce the right result.

Nevertheless, the use of complex chemical to reproduce fragrance is likely to increase, as the artificial ingredients as well as natural oils gives perfume manufacturers more control over the production process, which is why many classic perfumes owe their characteristic top notes to fruits of science not nature.

Chinese sportswear brand Erke announced Thursday that its internal computer system had     1     under the rush of orders it has received since becoming a social media darling as a result of its generous Henan floods     2     donations.

Erke also said in a live-stream that its supply chain is     3     by the sudden demand, with its warehouses emptied out and its production sites working at full capacity. “We are out of stock for over 40 products,” a company representative said.

The brand has been struggling financially but nevertheless pledged last week to donate 50 million yuan ($7.75 million)    4     of funds and goods to disaster areas in Henan province, where heavy rain and flooding continue to necessitate evacuations. The death toll     5     at 99 people as of Thursday.

In response, Chinese customers have bought any Erke product they could find. The brand’s live-stream on e-commerce platform Taobao     6     fewer than 6,000 viewers last week Wednesday and Thursday, figures show. But on Saturday, after the donation announcement, its viewership skyrocketed to nearly 20 million people.

Lacking sufficient staff to process all the     7     orders, Erke’s store on Taobao’s Tmall warns users that current purchases will take longer than two weeks to ship — an unusually long wait for Chinese online shopping standards.

Founded in the southeastern city Xiamen in 2000, Erke employs about 30,000 people and last year had around 2.8 billion yuan in revenue,     8     in comparison to domestic competitor Anta’s 35.5 billion yuan. Erke’s 2020 financial report shows it suffered 220 million yuan in losses, financial outlet Wall Street CN reported.

Erke went public on the Singapore Stock Exchange in 2005, but it was suspended six years later for accounting irregularities.” The company was delisted last year.

“I thought you were going bankrupt, but you still donated so much,” reads the top-voted comment under Erke’s donation announcement from July 21, which garnered over 800,000 likes. “It’s so rare for brick-and-mortar businesses to donate 50 million yuan,” another user wrote. “It’s hard to imagine how many shoes you’d have to sell.”

Erke CEO Wu Rongzhao has since repeatedly asked the public to think twice before opening their wallets. “I want to extend my sincere gratitude to everyone’s support,” he said in a video message on Sunday. “And I’d also like to use this opportunity to ask you to spend     9    .”

But few customers seem to have heeded his words. Across the country, media reported that people have     10     to Erke stores in shows of support. In Nanjing, a city in eastern China, a customer paid1,000 yuan for goods priced at 500 yuan and ran away before a shop assistant could hand him his change. Another customer was filmed having shaved the Erke logo — not previously seen as the summit of cool — into his hair.

The sudden attention has also brought scrutiny. A blogger who had sifted through public records discovered that Erke had, by Saturday, only given about 200,000 yuan. A day later, the two recipients of Erke’s donation, One Foundation and Zhengzhou Charity Federation, said that the company’s contributions would arrive in batches.

“We will fulfill our donation pledge based on the needs of these two institution.” Erke CEO Wu said in his video message.

Is renting clothes greener than buying them?

Clothing rental is a hot new industry and retailers are demanding to get on board in hopes of attracting green shoppers. But is renting fashion actually more environmentally-friendly than buying it, and if so, how much more? Journalist and author Elizabeth Cline investigated this question and concluded that it’s not as sustainable as it seems.

Take shipping, for example, which has to go two ways if an item is rented — receiving and returning. Cline writes that consumer transportation has the second largest carbon footprint of our collective fashion habit after manufacturing. She writes, “An item ordered online and then returned can send out 20 kilograms of carbon each way, and increases up to 50 kilograms for rush shipping. By comparison, the carbon impact of a pair of jeans purchased from a physical store and washed and worn at home is 33.4 kilograms, according to a 2015 study by Levi’s.”

Then there’s the burden of washing, which has to happen for every item when it’s returned, regardless of whether or not it was worn. For most rental services, this usually means dry cleaning, a high impact and polluting process. All the rental services that Cline looked into have replaced perchloroethylene (氯乙烯), a carcinogenic (致癌的) air pollutant that is still used by 70 percent of US dry cleaners, with hydrocarbon alternatives, although these aren’t great either.

Lastly, Cline fears that rental services will increase our appetite for fast fashion, simply because it’s so easily accessible. There’s something called “share washing” that makes people engage in more wasteful behaviors precisely because a product or service is shared and thus is regarded as more eco-friendly. Uber is one example of this, advertised as “a way to share rides and limit car ownership.” and yet “it has been proven to discourage walking, bicycling, and public transportation use.”

Renting clothes is still preferable to buying them cheap and throwing them in the dustbin after a few wears, but we shouldn’t let the availability of these services make us too satisfied. There’s an even better step—and that’s wearing what is already in the closet.
