3 . Movies about the future often show people travelling around in flying cars. Last Tuesday, that vision came a step closer to reality for a Japanese company called SkyDrive, as it showed off its new flying car, the SD-03, in action. The small car flew around for four minutes, staying about 1-2 meters off the ground.

The SD-03 is powered by batteries and has 8 motors, which lift it straight off the ground. What made this test flight special was that a pilot was on board. Toraohiro Fukuzawa, who leads SkyDrive, said, “Of the world’s over 100 flying car projects, only a handful have succeeded with a person on board.”

Many groups worldwide are working to develop flying cars. Some governments, including Japan’s, are supporting the idea, hoping that in the future, flying cars will be useful for short trips like taxi rides in cities. Flying cars could also help reach places that can’t be reached by road.

What happens when a motor fails? If flying cars are crossing a city, an accident could hurt not just people in the car, but people on the ground, too. That’s why the SD-03 has eight motors—as backups.

Some people believe flying cars reduce traffic jams. But new systems will be needed to help control traffic in the air. With many cars flying around, these systems would be too complicated to be managed in real time by humans. Besides, flying cars are expensive. When it’s ready, SkyDrive’s flying car is expected to sell for between $300,000 and $500,000.

However, people who believe in flying cars point out that cars and airplanes faced challenges at first, too. With time, many of the big problems were solved. By 2050, Mr. Fukuzawa hopes people will be able to fly anywhere inside Tokyo in just 10 minutes. “I think flying cars will become normal in the near future.” he says.

1. What was special about this test flight?
A.The car flew higher.B.The car was cheap.
C.The car flew on its own.D.The car carried a driver.
2. Why is the SD-03 equipped with eight motors?
A.To ensure its safety.B.To increase its flying speed.
C.To make it look cool.D.To enable it to carry more weight.
3. Which aspect of the flying cars is mainly discussed in paragraph 5?
A.Their design.B.Their application.
C.Their cost.D.Their disadvantages.
4. What is Mr. Fukuzawa’s opinion about flying cars?
A.They can be easily bought.B.They have a long way to go.
C.They have a promising future.D.They are environmentally friendly.

4 . When you walk on a sandy beach, it takes more energy than walking down a sidewalk, because the weight of your body pushes into the sand. It turns out that the same thing is true for vehicles driving on roads.

"The weight of the vehicles creates a very shallow indentation(凹陷)in the pavement, and it makes it such that it's continuously driving up a very shallow hill," said Jeremy Gregory, a scientist at MIT. He modeled with his teammates how much energy could be saved, and greenhouse gases avoided, by simply hardening the nation's roads and highways.

And they found that hardening 10 percent of the nation's roads every year could prevent emissions equal to 440 megatons of carbon dioxide over the next 5 decades—that amount is equal to how much CO2 you'd spare the planet by keeping a billion barrels of oil in the ground or by growing 7 billion trees for a decade. It reduces 0.5% of projected transportation emissions over that time period.

As for how to harden roads, Gregory says you could combine small amounts of certain fiber with high technology into paving materials. Or you could pave with specially-made concrete, which is harder than ordinary construction materials.

This system could also be a way to shave carbon emissions without some of the usual barriers. "Usually, when it comes to reducing emissions in the transportation department, you're talking about changing policies related to vehicles and also driver behavior, which involves millions and millions of people---as opposed to changing the way we design and preserve our pavements. That's just on the order of thousands of people who are working in transportation agencies." And when it comes to improving our streets and highways, those agencies are where you might say the rubber meets the road.

1. What's the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.It's valuable to harden roads.
B.It's necessary to reduce carbon dioxide.
C.We should harden roads to protect oil and trees.
D.We should take measures to prevent CO2 emissions.
2. According to Gregory, which could be the possible way to harden roads?
A.Using regular building materials.
B.Creating hi-tech computer models.
C.Changing traditional paving materials.
D.Mixing fiber with special-made concrete.
3. Which of the following is one of the benefits of hardening roads?
A.It profits transportation agencies.
B.It avoids involving too many people.
C.It offers people more job chances.
D.It creates new policies on vehicles.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.How to Harden Roads.B.Sandy Beaches or Sidewalks?
C.Harden Roads to Save Energy.D.Ways to Cut Down Carbon Emissions.

7 . Forget Cyclists, Pedestrians are Real Danger

We are having a debate about this topic. Here are some letters from our readers.

★Yes, many cyclists behave dangerously. Many drivers are disrespectful of cyclists. But pedestrians are probably the worst offenders.

People of all ages happily walk along the pavement with eyes and hands glued to the mobile phone, quite unaware of what is going on around them. They may even do the same thing while crossing a road at a pedestrian crossing or elsewhere. The rest of us have to evade(避让)them or just stand still to wait for the unavoidable collision(碰撞).

The real problem is that some pedestrians seem to be, at least for the moment, in worlds of their own that are, to them, much more important than the welfare of others.

——Michael Horan

★I love the letter from Bob Brooks about cyclists(Viewpoints, May 29). I am afraid they seem to think they own the roads.

I was walking across Altrincham Road one morning when a cyclist went round me and on being asked what he was doing he shouted at me.

The government built a cycle lane on the road but it is hardly used.

The police do nothing. What a laugh they are!

The cyclists should all have to be made to use the cycle lanes and wear helmets, fluorescent(发荧光的)jacket and lights at night and in the morning they should pay some sort of tax and be fined for not wearing them.

——Carol Harvey

★Cyclists jump on and off pavements(which are meant for pedestrians), ride at speed alone the pavement, and think they have a special right to go through traffic lights when they are on red.

I was almost knocked down recently by a cyclist riding on the pavement when there was a cycle lane right next to him.

Other road users, including horse riders, manage to obey the rules so why not cyclists?

It's about time they had to be registered and insured, so when they do hi a pedestrian or a vehicle, or cause an accident, at least they can be treated and there might be an opportunity to claim compensation.

——JML

Write to Viewpoints of the newspaper.

1. Michael Horan wrote the letter mainly to show that ________.
A.drivers should be polite to cyclists
B.road accidents can actually be avoided
C.some pedestrians are a threat to road safety
D.walking while using phones hurts one's eyes
2. Carol Harvey suggests that cyclists should ________.
A.be provided with enough roads
B.be asked to ride on their own lanes
C.be made to pay less tax for cycling
D.be fined for laughing at policemen
3. What is a complaint of JML?
A.Very few drivers are insured.
B.Horse riders disrespect other road users
C.Pedestrians go through red traffic lights.
D.Cyclists ride fast on pavements.

9 . 阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一个完整的故事。

Jennifer, a senior high school student, was driving the old blue sedan(轿车) owned by her father. She lived on a farm about ten miles away from downtown and used the car back and forth every day.

Jennifer had driven into town that night to see a basketball game between Rockets and Warriors. Now she was on her way home, thinking about the game-winning shot by Harden. As she pulled away from the stadium, she noticed a red pick-up truck follow her out of the parking lot. A few minutes later the truck was still behind her.

“I guess we're going in the same direction,” she whispered to herself. Anxious and suspicious, she began to watch the truck in her mirror. When she changed her speed, the driver of the truck changed his speed too! When she passed a car, so he did.

Then he turned on his high beams, flooding her car with light. He left them on for almost a minute. “He probably wants to pass me,” she tried to comfort herself. But this time she was becoming uneasy. Usually, Jennifer drove home over a back road. It was a narrow and bumpy country road with no few lights, so not too many people went that way. But when she turned onto that road, so did the truck.

“I’ve got to get away from him,” she was seized with sudden trembling and became deathly pale, feeling cold sweat flowing down her back, and without a second thought, Jennifer began to slam on the gas and picked up her speed. Then he turned his high beams on again. After a minute, he turned them off. Then he turned them on again and off again.

She changed gears(档位) and drove even faster, but the truck driver stayed right behind her. Then he turned his high beams on again. Once more her car was ablaze(明亮的)with light. “What is he doing?” she wondered. “What does he want?” Then he turned them off again. But a minute later he had them on again, and he left them on.

10 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Car registration plates (牌照) are just a series of numbers and letters, right? Well, yes…but not for everyone.

France was the first country     1    (introduce) plates in 1893. Early number plates differed     2    shape and size, and were made of lots of different materials, including iron, cardboard and even pressed soybeans. In fact, it was not until 1957     3    car manufacturers and the governments agreed on standardized(标准化) plates.     4    was first registered in the UK was A1. The letter “A” showed the number was from London, while the number “1” showed it was the first number issued. At the moment, number plates     5     (consist) of a sequence of letters and numbers are applied in the UK.

Different EU countries also use different arrangements of numbers and letters, and     6     systems have changed many times because these letter-number     7     (combine) keep running out. In the past decades, some number plates     8     (become) extremely valuable, particularly those that spell out words.     9     (basic), numbers on the plates can be used to represent words or parts of words. For example, “NVERLA8” means “Never Late”. And the most     10     (expense) number ever was “M1” which an anonymous(匿名的) buyer has acquired for £331,000.
