When Jack was a kid, he and his family left Britain and moved to a foreign country. Although his family was poor, he became a very excellent engineer after college. He knew a lot about the train. For example, he knew that when a fast-moving train’s speed has a sudden change, it’s probably because the track is broken at some distance.
After college, Jack gained a teaching job in a British university. So one summer day he left for Britain by ship. Being poor, he wore worn-out clothes, which were even a little messy. But he didn’t care about it at all. When he landed on the British shore, he took a train to the city where the university was. On the train, he found other passengers were all rich gentlemen, who wore nice suits and shoes. And he could see all of them were not friendly to him.
After the train started, they began making fun of him. They were angry, unsatisfied with the train guard who allowed him to get on the train with them. Some even wanted to pull the alarm to stop the train.
However, all of this didn’t have an effect on Jack. He was sitting there calmly, focusing on the train’s condition, including its speed and sound produced by the wheels running on the track. Each time he took a train, he’d pay attention to the train’s sound, speed, etc. By doing so, he could feel the train and the track and check whether the train had any possible danger.
That day, when the train was already running at a high speed, the gentlemen still continued to show their unfriendly behaviors to Jack. But Jack remained calm and still focused on the train’s running. One hour later, he found there was a sudden change in the train’s speed. After further feeling the train’s condition, he could decide the track was 100% broken at some distance.

Nowadays, cars have become a very common vehicle in our life. As one of the most important transport, cars have improved our modern life in many ways. However, cars also bring about so many problems for people, which should be given more attention than any time before.
Cars enable people to travel to any place they like. Many people begin to travel frequently. This helps people connect with each other better than before. A more obvious influence of cars is the large number of jobs that they create. Jobs in several fields open up thanks to cars, such as jobs in car factories, gas stations and highways. This is a huge positive influence on society because they greatly reduce the unemployment rate.
At the same time, the problems that cars cause seem to be more and more serious. A mass use of cars is bound to have some negative consequences. The widespread use of cars has led to serious traffic jams in cities. They have resulted in a reduction in the use of public transportation in many cities. The need to use and develop public transportation has been much discussed and confirmed. And also, car accidents result in a number of injuries and deaths. There are hundreds of thousands of them worldwide every year. Exhaust fumes of cars pollute the air in cities around the world. Air pollution causes serious health problems and even results in the death of many people. It has become one of the most serious problems today. Efforts to develop pollution-free engines may be the final solution to this problem.
In conclusion, people should not only enjoy the benefits of cars, but also aim to deal with the problems cars have created. At the same time, the government should improve city traffic systems, encourage people to use public transportation, make efforts to improve road safety and encourage the usage of green fuels. Only in these ways can the benefits of cars outweigh their harmfulness.

Cargo Bikes Bring Home the Goods
Since the first lockdown (封锁), increasing numbers of companies have started delivering their products on electric cargo bikes. According to the Brought by Bike, there are nearly 450 independent businesses and tradespeople across the UK delivering goods to customers using electricity and pedal (踏板) power.
The Bike Drop was established in the early days of the pandemic (疫情) to help businesses struggling to reach customers. “There was interest as soon as we opened. Companies wanted to choose the greener option for deliveries while customers loved having their shopping delivered by bike—and we all love having cleaner, quieter, safer streets,” said Harry McKeown, the managing director of the Bike Drop. During the first month of lockdown the grocery sector recorded a 91% increase in home deliveries. McKeown said demand for their delivery services started high and had continued to climb. “We soon had 13 employees delivering items for 36 local businesses,” he said. “We now have a group of electric bikes that have made over 6,500 individual pickups and deliveries for local businesses, cycled over 10,000 kilometers and saved more than 2,300 kilos of CO 2.” E-cargo bikes can move quickly through city streets, meaning they are able to deliver packages 60% faster than their van equivalents. They are cleaner— saving about 90% in carbon emissions—quieter, and cut traffic jams as a bike uses a small part of the road space of a van.
There are also a growing number of electric cargo bikes covering remote areas: Cargodale started delivering in the valleys of West Yorkshire and has experienced a business boom. The Cargodale co-founder Beate Kubitz said: “I live in a rural area and when lockdown happened and home deliveries increased, I saw parades of vans coming down my little lane, destroying the delicate countryside roads and polluting our air. I couldn’t believe there wasn’t an alternative.” Kubitz and some of her mountain-biker friends hired a cargo bike and experimented with local deliveries. “The interest from businesses and customers was immediate and strong,” she said. Cargodale has 15 riders delivering for up to 100 local businesses.

Ever try to get your children to wear bike helmets? They cry, “Johnny and Sara said helmets are for nerds!” And you respond, “I don't care what Johnny and Sara say. You'll do as I say!” This tactic usually fails, of course. It didn't work when your parents said that to you, did it?
Today, wearing a helmet is vital to your child's safety. Each year, bike-related accidents injure about 350, 000 children age 14 and under. Many suffer head injuries; bike helmets can reduce the risk of head injuries by 85 percent. Yet, peer pressure can be a safety risk for children. Experts say children begin to care more about their friends' opinions than their parents' as early as the second grade. A child may refuse to wear a helmet if friends don't, or if they think wearing a bike helmet is not “cool.”
How can a safety-conscious parent deal with this kind of peer pressure? The National SAFE KIDS Campaign provides some suggestions for parents. You can encourage helmet use before “being cool” matters. Some experts suggest putting helmets on children when they begin riding tricycles. If children get used to wearing helmets before age seven, they may find them more acceptable later. It is also important for you to set a good example. The example of parents strongly influences children. You can set a household rule that applies to everyone: If you ride a bicycle, you wear a helmet. In addition, you can promote bicycle helmet use among other parents. Educate other parents about how helmets can reduce the risk of head injuries. This will reduce peer pressure by making rules consistent from household to household.
Every time your children ride a bicycle, ask them to wear helmets, even if it is a five-minute ride. It is your responsibility as a parent. Take a stand when peer pressure is working against you. Be firm. Make it clear that if your children do not wear helmets, they cannot ride their bicycles.
