文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章认为社交媒体会给用户带来各种影响,有积极的,也有消极的,人们应该理性使用社交媒体。

2 . By now, we are all aware that social media has had a tremendous influence on our culture, in business, on the world-at-large. Social media websites revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on the Web. However, aside from seeing your friend’s new baby on Facebook, or reading about Justin Bieber’s latest conflict with the law on Twitter, what are some of the real influences?

Social networks offer the opportunity for people to re-connect with their old friends and acquaintances, make new friends, share ideas and pictures, and many other activities. Users can keep pace with the latest global and local developments, and participate in campaigns and activities of their choices. Professionals use social media sites like LinkedIn to enhance their career and business development. Students can work together with their peers to improve their academic and communication skills.

Unfortunately, there are a few downsides too to social networking. If you are not careful, immoral people can target you for cyber bullying and disturbance on social sites. School children, young girls, and women can fall victim to online attacks which can create tension and suffering. If you are a victim of cyber bullying, do not take it lying down, but try to take appropriate legal action against the attacker.

Many companies have blocked social networks as addicted employees can distract themselves on such sites, instead of focusing on work. In fact, studies show that British companies have lost billions of dollars per year in productivity because of social media addiction among employees.

Also, what you carelessly post on the Internet can come back to trouble you. Revealing (泄露) personal information on social sites can make users vulnerable (易受伤害的) to crimes like identity theft, stalking, etc. Many companies perform a background check on the Internet before hiring an employee. If a potential employee has posted something embarrassing on social media, it can greatly affect their chances of getting the job. The same holds true for our relationships too, as our loved ones and friends may get to know if we post something undesirable on social networks.

Social media has its advantages and drawbacks as each coin has two sides. It is up to each user to use social sites wisely to enhance their professional and social life, and exercise caution to ensure they do not fall victim to online dangers.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。研究发现,当孩子们画科学家的时候,美国儿童现在比以往任何时候都更经常描绘女科学家。这种转变说明了儿童将科学与男性联系在一起的刻板印象已经减弱。

3 . When drawing scientists. U. S. children now depict (描画) female scientists more often than ever, according to new Northwestern University research, which has analyzed five decades of “Draw-A-Scientist” studies conducted since the 1960s.

This change suggests that children’s stereotypes (刻板印象) linking science with men have weakened over time, said the researchers, consistent with more women becoming scientists and children’s media depicting more female scientists on television shows and other media.

In the first study, conducted between 1968 and 1979, less than one percent of 5,000 children drew an image resembling a woman when asked to draw a scientist. Almost all their artwork depicted men working with laboratory equipment, often with lab coats, glasses and facial hair.

But in later studies (1988 to 2019), 28 percent of children drew a female scientist, on average. In addition, both girls and boys drew female scientists more often over time, though girls overall drew female scientists much more often than boys.

“Our results suggest that children’s stereotypes change as women’s and men’s roles change in society.” said study lead author David Miller. “Children still draw more male than female scientists, but that is expected because women remain a minority in several science fields.”

The researchers also studied how children form stereotypes about scientists across child development. The results suggested children did not associate science with men until grade school; around age 5, they drew roughly equal percentages of male and female scientists. During elementary and middle school, the tendency to draw male scientists increased strongly with age. Older children were also more likely to draw scientists with lab coats and glasses, suggesting that children learn other stereotypes as they mature.

“These changes across children’s age likely reflect that children’s exposure to male scientists accumulates during development, even in recent years.” said Miller.

“To build on cultural changes, teachers and parents should present children with multiple examples of female scientists across many contexts such as science courses, television shows and informal conversations,” Miller said.

1. What is the change in children drawing scientists?
A.Children draw more male scientists.
B.Children draw more female scientists.
C.Girls draw more scientists than boys.
D.Children draw more female than male scientists.
2. What does Miller think of children drawing more male scientists than female scientists?
A.It’s not surprising.B.It’s not reasonable.
C.It’s unexpected.D.It’s not acceptable.
3. What does paragraph 6 mainly talk about?
A.How children develop their drawings.
B.How children’s stereotypes change with age.
C.Why children draw more male scientists.
D.What scientists look like in children’s drawings.
4. According to Miller, how can we make children draw more female scientists?
A.By encouraging children to attend science courses.
B.By encouraging children to become scientists in the future.
C.By giving children an example of drawing female scientists.
D.By making female scientists known to children in various situations.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。1915年,木制帆船“耐力号”被困在厚冰层中,后来沉没。后来名叫Endurance 22的搜寻小组宣布找到这艘船,并介绍了寻找它的方法。

5 . In 1914, Ernest Shackleton and his team left England in a wooden sailing ship called the Endurance, hoping to become the first to cross Antarctica.

But in 1915, the Endurance became trapped over the Weddell Sea. The ice destroyed the Endurance and later sank it. Shackleton and all of his men abandoned the ship and managed to stay alive. Although they failed to complete the expedition, the tale of their long and difficult return is one of the most famous survival stories of all time.

Much was known about the location of the Endurance. The ship’s captain kept accurate records of the ship’s position. The ship’s photographer even took pictures of it as it went down. But the ship, deep in the icy waters near Antarctica, had never been found.

Now, a search team called “Endurance22” located the ship, which was found 1.87 miles below the ocean’s surface, about four miles south of its last known position. The team reports that the ship is in excellent shape. Even though the ship is made of wood and is over 100 years old, it has survived with little damage. Scientists say that the small worms that normally break down wooden objects underwater don’t live in the cold waters around Antarctica.

The Endurance 22 is led by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust. The team ran the project from an icebreaking ship. To locate the Endurance, the team used two underwater robots called Sabertooths which can travel by themselves deep under the sea. What makes them unique is that they can travel under the ice and go where the ship can not. Once the ship was located, the Sabertooths used highquality cameras and scanners to record the Endurance in detail.

The Endurance 22 plans to create a digital 3D model of the wreck site, using the careful scans they made. This will allow scientists to study the ship in detail without disturbing it.

1. What can we know about Shackleton?
A.He built the Endurance by himself.B.He was also a famous photographer.
C.He had a tough journey back home.D.He crossed Antarctica by the Endurance.
2. What helped preserve “the Endurance” well?
A.Fine weather.B.Cold water.
C.Wood material.D.Unique structure.
3. What is special about the Sabertooths?
A.They can repair the ship.B.They can travel under the ice.
C.They can break ice on the sea.D.They can take pictures in detail.
4. How will the scientists deal with the discovered Endurance?
A.They will let it remain untouched.
B.They will rebuild it using 3D technology.
C.They will use scanners to record its details.
D.They will do research on creating a model.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了欧洲天然气价格上涨,储量不足,未来可能面临严重的天然气短缺。

6 . Wholesale prices for gas and electricity are increasing suddenly across Europe, raising the possibility of increases in already-high utility (公共事业)bills and further pain for people who have taken a financial hit fromCOVID-19.

Governments are struggling to find ways to limit costs to consumers as scant natural gas reserves present yet another potential problem, exposing the continent to even more price increases and possible shortages if it’s a cold winter.

In the U.K., many people will see their gas and electricity bills rise next month after the nation’s energy regulator approved a 12% price increase for those without contracts that lock in rates. Officials in Italy have warned that prices will increase by 40% for the quarter that will be billed in October.

There are multiple causes for the price increases, energy analysts say, including tight supplies of natural gas used to generate electricity, higher costs for permits to release carbon dioxide as part of Europe’s fight against climate change, and less supply from wind in some cases.

Analysts at S&P Global Platts say electricity prices have risen due to strong demand from places like data centers and electric cars, but above all because of the rise in the price of natural gas used in generating plants. Utility companies’ exposure to natural gas prices has increased as high-emission coal plants have been retired, while utilities face higher costs for carbon allowances required by the European Union’s emissions trading system, which is aimed at reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.

The tight gas market could bite even more sharply if there’s an unusually cold winter. That’s because European distributors did not refill reserves reduced during last winter as they typically had done in summer months. In March 2008, when the freeze named “the beast from the east” hit Europe, industrial users in the U.K got a notice that there was a risk of interruption, although it didn’t come to that.

Could Europe run out of gas? “The short answer is Yes, this is a real risk,” said James Huckstepp, an analyst at S&P Global Platts. “Storage stocks are at record lows and there isn’t currently any spare supply capacity that is exportable anywhere in the world. The longer answer is that it’s hard to predict how it will play out given that Europe has never run out of gas in two decades under the current distribution system.”

1. What does the underlined word “scant” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Total.B.Additional.C.Limited.D.Regular.
2. What has actually led to the rise of electricity prices?
A.The closure of some coal plants.
B.The great demand for electric cars.
C.The competition between utility companies.
D.The change in the emissions trading system.
3. Why could an unusually cold winter make the gas market tighter?
A.More natural gas will be needed for industrial use.
B.European distributors don’t make good preparations.
C.It is not easy to fill reserves during the cold weather.
D.Utility companies work can be easily interrupted.
4. What can we learn from James Huckstepp’s words in the last paragraph?
A.Europe is expected to seek help from other countries.
B.It is hard to control the gas price in Europe at present.
C.Europe might face a serious shortage of gas in the future.
D.There’s something wrong with Europe’s distribution system.

7 . Empathy (同理心) is one of those strange qualities — something almost everyone wants, but few know how to truly give or receive it. In a world where self-satisfaction is emphasized, it is in short supply but high demand. This is all the more reason to teach the next generation what it means to have empathy for those around them.

What Is Empathy? — Many people confuse sympathy and empathy, but they are two distinct values. Empathy is not just the ability to understand someone's feelings; criminals often take advantage of people by appearing to understand their feelings and subsequently gaining their trust. Empathy is more than that. Not only is it the ability to recognize how someone feels, but it also values and respects the feelings of another person. It means treating others with kindness, dignity, and understanding.

Kids Need To See Adults Show Empathy — While some children are gifted with naturally kind hearts, in most cases kids need to see empathy modeled by the adults around them. It begins with the way parents relate to their children. Parents who show an interest in the things that matter to their kids and respond to emotions in a positive and caring way are teaching the skill of empathy.

Meet Emotional Needs — When children have their emotional needs met, two things happen. They learn how to meet the emotional needs of others and they are anchored in what they are receiving, meaning that they are secure enough to give to others when the need arises but first they need to receive. An empty jug cannot fill a cup.

It's a good idea to talk to kids about emotions and how other people experience them. Give their emotions names (for example, jealousy, anger, and love) and teach them that these are normal. Talk to them about how to handle emotions in a positive way and point out situations where other people are experiencing emotions. Teach them about respecting the emotions of others and show them how to act in a situation where a response is required.

1. Why is it that the next generation are taught to have empathy?
A.Because people tend to center themselves.B.Because everyone lacks empathy.
C.Because empathy is a strange quality.D.Because it's better to give than to receive.
2. Which situation can empathy be used in?
A.When a mathematician is calculating the area of a farmland.
B.When a teacher is comforting a student about his failure in exams.
C.When a criminal is cheating a victim.
D.When a dancer is dancing to music.
3. What does the underlined sentence "An empty jug cannot fill a cup" mean?
A.An empty jug is too small to hold a cup.
B.It's a must to talk to kids about emotions.
C.Adults should set an example to kids.
D.Kids give empathy with their emotional needs met first.
4. What is the main topic of the passage?
A.How to train kids to have empathy.
B.How to distinguish sympathy and empathy.
C.How to help kids finish empathy-related tasks.
D.Whether kids can be trained to be more empathetic.

It is often the case, when having meals, waiting buses or at tending lectures, you can always find people addicted to their cellphones, completely ignoring others.

This is really a common phenomenon in our daily life. The reason is why smart phones nowadays can be used to playing mobile games and keep in touch with friends. However, too much exposure to phones are bad for people in terms of healthy. Moreover, people involving in phones fail to communicate well with these around them.

As far as I am concerned , people should be wisely make use of their phones to help with their work and study. Meanwhile, they should care much about their family and friends than mobile phones.

9 . Instagram(图片分享社交应用程序)is about to take its biggest step toward removing likes from its platform. After months of testing an option to hide likes in select international markets, Instagram, which is owned by Facebook(FB), has already been testing hiding likes in seven other countries, including Canada, Ireland and Australia. For years, likes have been central to how celebrities, brands, politicians and everyday users experience Instagram and Facebook. It's a way of measuring popularity and success. But in recent months, Instagram has been rethinking how likes contribute to making its platform more toxic. Now it's considering a change.

The total number of likes on posts — which appear as hearts on the app ——will disappear from Instagram's main feed, profile pages and permalink(永久链接)pages. The owner of the account can still see their own likes, but their followers won't know the count.

CNN Business previously spoke with users in countries with the test. The majority felt this move would improve well-being on the app. Instagram is the most detrimental(不利的,有害的)social networking app for young people's mental health, such as negatively impacting body image, according   to one study.

But other users and psychologists said hiding likes won't fix everything. The test doesn't address some of the key ways that activity on Instagram can impact the well-being of users, including bullying, feeling left out and thinking other people's lives are better than their own.

Renee Engeln, a psychology professor at Northwestern University, voiced his opinion that the biggest impact of Instagram is the content and the exposure to this constant stream of perfected images is what seems to hurt psychologically. Plus, users can still see their own likes ——and feel badly if their posts don't perform well.

1. How do users experience Instagram in this passage?
A.By giving likes.B.By hiding likes.
C.By selecting platforms.D.By showing off talents.
2. The underlined word “toxic” in Paragraph 1 most probably means “      ”.
A.profitableB.poisonous
C.popularD.positive
3. What can we infer from the passage?
A.Instagram has affected youngsters' mental health.
B.The account owners won't know the count o£ likes.
C.Instagram tested hiding likes in seven countries first.
D.The majority think Instagram has been a well-being app.
4. What could be the best title of the passage?
A.Instagram Misuses Likes
B.More People Are Against Likes
C.Likes Cause Mental Problems
D.Likes will Be Hidden on Instagram

10 . There’s no doubt that one of the greatest human achievements is the exploration of the space. Ever since astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to be sent into the orbit around the moon in 1961, scientists have been pushing the boundaries further and further. But until now the exploration into the unknown has been dominated (主导) by men.

Of course, in the past, women were also included in the space projects and played an active role on the ground and behind the scenes. For example, they worked as seamstresses (女裁缝师), sewing vital spaceflight components. In fact, many of NASA’s key works would never have been possible without them. Recently Hollywood produced a movie called Hidden Figures to focus on a group of American female mathematicians, especially the black women, who helped NASA send the first American into space. But this was not women’s only contribution. Back in 1963, Soviet astronaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to be sent into space. However, after that, space flight programs were slow to employ women. In the USA. NASA didn’t accept applications from women to become astronauts until 1978.

But attitudes have changed and leading officials at NASA say that the first person to set foot on Mars should be a woman. The space agency aims to have a sex-balanced workforce but can only achieve that if equal numbers of men and women are trained for science and technology jobs. As Allison McIntryre told the BBC, “My director is a woman. We have female astronauts. We haven’t put a woman on the moon yet. And I think that perhaps the first person to step on Mars should be a woman.”

1. What did Yuri Gagarin do in 1961?
A.He landed on the moon in success.
B.He discovered many new boundaries.
C.He led scientists to explore the moon.
D.He made the first journey into the space.
2. Why does the author mention the film Hidden Figures?
A.To show women are the true heroes of NASA’s first launch.
B.To stress that black people have won equal rights in NASA.
C.To prove women can do as well as men in NASA’ projects.
D.To present women’s contributions to NASA’s space programs.
3. What is Allison McIntryre’s attitude toward women astronauts?
A.Uncaring.B.Disapproving.
C.Supportive.D.Disappointed.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Will the First Person to Step on Mars Be a Woman?
B.Great Achievements Have Been Made in Space Exploration?
C.Why Men Played an Important Role in Exploring the Unknown?
D.Men and Women Have Made Equal Contributions to NASA’s Projects?
