1 . Colleen and her husband were part of a group walking the Overland Track. It was the fifth day of a 6-day walk. The guide, who was waiting for them at the nearest camp, had _______ them about the slippery and potentially dangerous conditions. Colleen, an experienced adventurer from Sydney, was a naturally _______ walker. Colleen hit her head badly and went into _______. She soon woke up and turned around to see her husband sitting stunned on the side of the track. He had accidently fallen from the top. He had first slipped above Colleen, and his full weight, with his pack, _______down on top of her. He was uninjured, and Colleen was suspended on the branch. He reached out to grab Colleen's arm. Colleen felt so painful, the worst physical suffering she had ever felt in her life. She knew _______that her arm was broken.

Her husband took her pack along with his own and together they struggled for the final three kilometers to the camp. Once they reached the camp, the guide gave her first aid and called for the rescue helicopter immediately.

Colleen was _______to the nearest hospital by helicopter. She was examined in the hospital and was told that her head and neck were okay, but her arm had been broken in four places.

Later, Colleen recalled with emotion, "After this personal experience of near-death and being saved, I realized that in some situations there's absolutely no _______to get to hospital, and the rescue helicopter was the only way. At that moment, the most ________ noise was hearing the helicopter come. The helicopter rescue workers were so generous, so highly skilled as well. When they arrived with the policemen, I was never more grateful to see anyone in my whole life."

2 . It was late, about 10:15 p.m., when Janice Esposito arrived at the Bellport train station; she jumped into her Honda Odyssey and began the 20-minute drive home to her husband and seven-year-old son. She’d just returned from visiting her mother and had traveled the route many times before. She practically _______ on autopilot: a left onto Station Road, then a left on Montauk Highway, and then—wham! Out of nowhere a car T-boned Esposito’s minivan, _______ her to move backward some 100 feet onto the railroad tracks. The   heavy diesel train, traveling at 65 miles per hour, was moving fast toward them. DiPinto ran to the passenger side and threw open the __________. “Please, don’t let her be __________,” he thought.     He pushed aside the deflating (瘪了的) airbags, grabbed Esposito’s arms, and__________her toward him across the passenger seat until he could help her out and quickly get her to ____________ behind a signal box a few feet away. Within six seconds, he estimated, the train crashed into the minivan. “It was like a Hollywood movie,” DiPinto told reporters the next day.

But this one had a twist. “Last night,” South Country Ambulance chief Greg Miglino told CBS New York, “the__________ arrived in pajamas, not in a fire truck.”

3 . On Dyec. 13, 2014, Nubia Wilson turned 16. But instead of _______with an exciting Sweet 16 birthday party, the California teen devoted this milestone to _______the lives of orphans in Ethiopia.

Through several summers of volunteer work at an Ethiopia orphanage, Nubia learned firsthand the severe poverty so many children _______. In an email to The Huffington Post, Nubia said that she was _______struck by the children’s lack of access to _______— their school only went through the fourth grade.

Over the course of her volunteer work, Nubia became interested in one _______, Hermela. She writes: Out of the many students in the kindergarten class, Hermela became _______and attached to me to a point where it was becoming _______for both of us to leave each other. She is now in the second grade. The thought of Hermela not being able to have her meal and _______education after the fourth grade became __________and I knew I had to do something.

That’s when Nubia decided that she didn’t want a traditional Sweet 16. __________, she wanted to use the money her parents would have spent on a party to establish __________grade class for Hermela and other kids.

Nubia’s birthday may not have been a party, but it’s truly a celebration.

4 . A Heroic Driver

Larry works with Transport Drivers,   Inc.   One morning in 2009, Larry was ______along 165 north after delivering to one of his _______. Suddenly, he saw a car with its bright lights on. _______ he got closer, he found ____ vehicle upside down on the road. One more look and he noticed _______ shooting out from under the _______ vehicle. Larry pulled over, set the brake and _______the fire extinguisher (灭火器). Two good bursts from the extinguisher and the fire was put out.

The man who had his bright lights on _______ and told Larry he had _______ an emergency call. They ________ heard a woman’s voice coming from the wrecked (毁坏的) vehicle. ________the vehicle, they saw that a woman was trying to get out of the broken window. They told her to stay ________ until the emergency personnel arrived, ________ she thought the car was going to ________. Larry told her that he had already put out the fire and she should not move ________ she injured her neck.

Once fire and emergency people arrived, Larry and the other man ________ and let them go to work. Then, Larry asked the ________ if he was needed or ________ to go. They let him and the other man go.

One thing is ________—Larry went above and beyond the call of duty by getting so close to the burning vehicle! His ________ most likely saved the woman’s life.
