A journey enriched with cuisine and culture

As reported by China Tourism News, the combination of culture and tourism has inspired several cities in China to explore their cooking heritage while transforming food tours into cultural experiences.

Recently the sharp increase in popularity of Zibo barbecue is a clear proof to this effort. Zibo,     1     (locate) in East China’s Shandong province, was not     2     (wide) known as a tourist destination. However, over the past three months, the industrial. city’s delicious barbecue     3     (gain) large popularity and attracted a massive arrival of visitors who have turned it into a tourist hot spot.

“I never expected Zibo barbecue     4     (become) so popular all of a sudden!” said Zhang Linlin, deputy director of the business management department at Shandong College of Tourism and Hospitality. “With the recent much publicity, many of my young colleagues have rushed to try     5     out. They all praised its great taste and reasonable price. “

Zhang is researching the Zibo barbecue craze to identify sustainable strategies     6     can promote youth tourism and support the recovery of the tourism industry.

China boasts a diverse range of cuisine, and     7     (region) throughout the country have been actively exploring the potential of food as a catalyst (催化剂) for tourism growth.

Food plays a vital role in driving tourism spending and     8     (win) a traveler’s heart. Wu Liyun, an associate professor at the China Academy of Culture and Tourism of Beijing International Studies University, illustrated this point by reflecting     9     her own experience: “The attractive skewers (烤肉串) of Dujiangyan, the tasty Yimeng stir-fried chicken of Linyi and the pleasant grilled oysters (蚝) of Guangzhou were not only among the most memorable and important components of my plans, but they were the     10     (great) motivators for me to return,” Wu said.

The Cause for Kobe’s Helicopter Crash

Federal officials announced in the press that the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and eight others in 2020 occurred because the pilot likely got disoriented (失去方向) while flying into the clouds against federal rules.

“The pilot, Ara Zobayan, who also died     1    the Jan. 26, 2020, crash in Calabasas, California, was operating the helicopter under rules that prevented him from flying into clouds. However, he did not follow his training and continued into the clouds     2    the aircraft crashed into a hill,” investigators said.

The crash also killed Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, two other teenage girls with their family members, along with     3    basketball coach. The victims were on their way from Orange County to a girls’ basketball game at Bryant’s Mamba Sports Academy.

“While     4    (encounter) the foggy weather conditions, Zobayan notified air traffic controllers that he was climbing to 4, 000 feet to get above the cloud layer, when in fact, the helicopter was actually going down rapidly,” federal investigators said at a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) hearing.

The NTSB     5    (determine) that Zobayan likely experienced “spatial disorientation”, a misleading sensation that confuses pilots into not knowing which way is up or down.

Investigators also said that given his very close friendship with Bryant, Zobayan     6    have experienced “self—induced pressure” to complete the flight so as not to disappoint Bryant. While the NTSB said there was no evidence to suggest that Bryant     7    placed any pressure on Zobayan to complete the flight, the self-induced pressure might have to a great extent affected pilot’s decision making and judgment. “While climbing into the clouds, Zobayan lost visual references,     8    could lead to a false sense of orientation owing to inner ear illusions,” investigators said. “This could cause the pilot to believe they were flying straight and level, while in reality they were flying in a steady left turn—this is     9    we call ‘the leans’. And that finally led to the tragedy.”

From 2010 to 2019, there were 184 fatal aircraft accidents related to spatial disorientation in America, 20 of which were fatal helicopter accidents. Experts say they are trying to work out better solutions to this problem to make future flights     10    (safe).

Ask someone what he has done to help the environment, and he will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling around the home is, of course, very important. However,     1    (force) to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better     2     we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.

The total amount of packaging increased     3     12 percent between 1999 and 2005. A large number of companies believe that they can attract customers’ attention and stimulate their purchasing desire by over-packaging their goods, thus     4    (gain) more profits.

Too much packaging is doing damage to the environment. If such packaging     5    (burn), it will give off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps,     6     the process itself uses energy. The solution is to stop producing such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. Fortunately, a few of them are coming round to the idea     7     this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.

Yet this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that     8     without packaging is of poor quality. This is especially true of food, but it applies to a wide range of consumer products,     9     often have far more packaging than necessary.

There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary material we are collecting. However, despite the ongoing campaigns     10    (promote) consumers’ green awareness, we still have a long way to go.

The Chinese New Year holiday is just around the corner. As you enjoy time with family and friends, you may want to do some shopping for a fresh new look.     1     that’s the case, I have an important question for you: Are you an ethical shopper?

Many clothing items are made from animal products. Think about what you’re wearing right now or what’s in your closet. Do you have any leather gloves, shoes, jackets or handbags? Or perhaps you have a cozy suede (绒面革) coat     2    (decorate) with fur.     3     you consciously avoid animal products, something in your wardrobe is probably made from an animal.

Historically, clothing was made from animal furs or hides     4     necessity and availability. For example, the indigenous (本土的) people of Canada hunted wild animals for food and used the non-edible (不可食用的) parts to make tools, clothing and even shelter. In today’s reality, very few people can claim that they require animal furs or hides to keep them warm. Does this mean that we should not wear any clothing made from animals? To some extent, that is a personal decision.     5     I’m not suggesting that you should completely stop buying animal products, I do think that every one of us     6     become more ethical shoppers. We should know where our clothing was manufactured and     7     standards the companies follow.

Some countries have few laws that govern the treatment of animals. Animals may be raised on “fur farms” for     8     only purpose of being killed for their furs. They often spend their short lives in dirty living conditions and may even be cruelly killed in a painful manner.

On the other hand, some countries and companies are against animal cruelty. The website of one popular clothing brand claims to buy the lamb skin for their famous boots only from suppliers that use “humane animal treatment”. They also claim to only use the skin of sheep that are killed for food.     9    (base) on this, they argue that their clothing products do not directly cause any harm to animals.

This Chinese New Year, do a little research before you make any purchases. Your choice to only support companies that have high ethical standards could help change the clothing industry and make things better     10     animals everywhere.

When we think of green buildings, we tend to think of new ones — the kind of modern, solar-paneled masterpieces. But the US     1     (have) more than 100 million existing homes, and it would be incredibly wasteful to tear them all down.

An enormous amount of energy and     2     (resource) went into the construction of those houses. And it would take     3     average of 65 years for the reduced carbon emissions from a new energy-efficient home to make up for the resources       4     (lose) by destroying an old one. So in the broadest sense, the     5     (green) home is the one that has already been built. But at the same time, nearly half of US carbon emissions come from heating, cooling     6     powering our buildings. They can’t deal with climate change without dealing     7     existing buildings.

The oldest homes tend to be the least energy-efficient, mainly due to the tiny cracks and gaps that expand over time and let in more outside air.

8     (fortune), there are a vast number of relatively simple changes     9     can green older homes. And efficiency upgrades can save more than just the earth; they can help protect property owners from     10     (rise) power costs.

The government is being urged to monitor teachers’ well-being after research has revealed that one in 20 are reporting mental health problems which have lasted for more than one year.

The study, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, is the first    1     (examine) the mental health and well-being of teachers in England over the span of three decades, based on the data recorded from more than 20, 000 of them during that time.

It has found that around 5% of teachers today    2     (suffer) long-lasting mental health problems, up from just 1% in the 1990s.

The figures    3     be ringing alarm bells for England’s policymakers. They are having a hard time hiring teachers at a time     4     the number of children of school age is on the increase. The government     5     (make) a series of promises to reduce workload so far, but teachers say they are not seeing the real benefits yet.

According to the report, a third of new teachers leave the job within the first five years. The paper also quotes recent Department for Education (DfE) research,     6     found that “sleeping problems, panic attacks and anxiety issues” had contributed to teachers’ decisions to quit the profession.

The lead author of the report, Johm Jerrim, a professor at the UCL institute of education, says that the teaching profession in England is currently in the middle of a crisis, and that its struggle to hire and retain enough teachers is partly    7     the pressures of the job.

“It has long been known that teaching is a stressful and challenging career and we wanted to see    8     the mental health and well-being of teachers had improved or declined,” he says.

The report admits that the increase in reported mental health problems is not specific to education, but can be seen in other professions,     9     human resources and accountancy.

It concludes, “In our view,     10     (pressing) issue is for the DfE to make a commitment to monitor the mental health and well-being of the teacher profession.”

For youngsters born with silver spoons in their mouths, living expenses never seem to be worth    1     (think)about. However, for college students who have just stepped into the real world, the cost of living can be a headache. When it comes to the precise amount of living expenses     2     should be given to the college students, a heated debate arises.

From my point of view, how much money a student should be given    3     (vary) from person to person. The average cost of living in the city    4     the university is located, the student’s ability to budget appropriately, as well as the economic capability of the parents should    5     (take)into consideration.

I    6     just became a boarder this semester, and each month I receive 1, 000 yuan for meals. For college students, however, many more factors come into play. So, in my humble opinion, for college students who study in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai, 2, 500 yuan each month ought to be a reasonable amount.

As a consequence of the improper management of living expenses, money shortages occur from time to time. Many college students tend to take up part-time jobs     7     (make)ends meet if they find the pocket money from their parents insufficient. But I strongly object to such behaviour, because it may mean    8     (take) away too much time from our studies, with the losses ending up outweighing the gains.

Students should always keep in mind that study is their top priority in college. When running into financial difficulties, we’d better turn to our parents for help. However,     9     giving the money without reservation, parents should deduct(扣除) the overdraft from their children’s pocket money for the following month, the aim of which is     10     (teach)the children a lesson on money management.

Literacy (读写能力) exactly changes the human brain. The process of learning to read changes our brain, but so does what we read, how we read and on what we read. This is especially important nowadays,     1     many people are tied to screens at any given moment.

We are still in the early stages of understanding the impact of digital-based learning    2     the development of children’s reading brains. Transforming new information into solid knowledge in the brain     3     (require) multiple connections to abstract reasoning skills. Each of    4     needs the kind of time and attention often absent in digital reading.

Researchers have found declines in students’ comprehension when they read the same information on screens rather than print. Yet readers thought themselves better on screens because they were “faster”. More than 80% of college educators see a “shallowing” effect by screens on their students’ reading comprehension, according to new research. Similar results     5    (find)in Israeli fifth and sixth graders recently.

The reasons are multiple, but they are not because deep reading is impossible on a screen. It is simply harder, because screens are linked with distraction (分散注意力的事), which in turn leads to less time     6     (give) to abstract thought.

The great challenge now is     7     (learn) how to use both print and digital media to their best advantage for all. As a society we must ensure that there are always books    8     our children’s digital devices. It doesn’t matter    9     the books are new or old, owned or borrowed from the library.     10     matters is that they are there, and that children are encouraged to read them.
