The Chinese New Year holiday is just around the corner. As you enjoy time with family and friends, you may want to do some shopping for a fresh new look.     1     that’s the case, I have an important question for you: Are you an ethical shopper?

Many clothing items are made from animal products. Think about what you’re wearing right now or what’s in your closet. Do you have any leather gloves, shoes, jackets or handbags? Or perhaps you have a cozy suede (绒面革) coat     2    (decorate) with fur.     3     you consciously avoid animal products, something in your wardrobe is probably made from an animal.

Historically, clothing was made from animal furs or hides     4     necessity and availability. For example, the indigenous (本土的) people of Canada hunted wild animals for food and used the non-edible (不可食用的) parts to make tools, clothing and even shelter. In today’s reality, very few people can claim that they require animal furs or hides to keep them warm. Does this mean that we should not wear any clothing made from animals? To some extent, that is a personal decision.     5     I’m not suggesting that you should completely stop buying animal products, I do think that every one of us     6     become more ethical shoppers. We should know where our clothing was manufactured and     7     standards the companies follow.

Some countries have few laws that govern the treatment of animals. Animals may be raised on “fur farms” for     8     only purpose of being killed for their furs. They often spend their short lives in dirty living conditions and may even be cruelly killed in a painful manner.

On the other hand, some countries and companies are against animal cruelty. The website of one popular clothing brand claims to buy the lamb skin for their famous boots only from suppliers that use “humane animal treatment”. They also claim to only use the skin of sheep that are killed for food.     9    (base) on this, they argue that their clothing products do not directly cause any harm to animals.

This Chinese New Year, do a little research before you make any purchases. Your choice to only support companies that have high ethical standards could help change the clothing industry and make things better     10     animals everywhere.

When we think of green buildings, we tend to think of new ones — the kind of modern, solar-paneled masterpieces. But the US     1     (have) more than 100 million existing homes, and it would be incredibly wasteful to tear them all down.

An enormous amount of energy and     2     (resource) went into the construction of those houses. And it would take     3     average of 65 years for the reduced carbon emissions from a new energy-efficient home to make up for the resources       4     (lose) by destroying an old one. So in the broadest sense, the     5     (green) home is the one that has already been built. But at the same time, nearly half of US carbon emissions come from heating, cooling     6     powering our buildings. They can’t deal with climate change without dealing     7     existing buildings.

The oldest homes tend to be the least energy-efficient, mainly due to the tiny cracks and gaps that expand over time and let in more outside air.

8     (fortune), there are a vast number of relatively simple changes     9     can green older homes. And efficiency upgrades can save more than just the earth; they can help protect property owners from     10     (rise) power costs.

The government is being urged to monitor teachers’ well-being after research has revealed that one in 20 are reporting mental health problems which have lasted for more than one year.

The study, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, is the first    1     (examine) the mental health and well-being of teachers in England over the span of three decades, based on the data recorded from more than 20, 000 of them during that time.

It has found that around 5% of teachers today    2     (suffer) long-lasting mental health problems, up from just 1% in the 1990s.

The figures    3     be ringing alarm bells for England’s policymakers. They are having a hard time hiring teachers at a time     4     the number of children of school age is on the increase. The government     5     (make) a series of promises to reduce workload so far, but teachers say they are not seeing the real benefits yet.

According to the report, a third of new teachers leave the job within the first five years. The paper also quotes recent Department for Education (DfE) research,     6     found that “sleeping problems, panic attacks and anxiety issues” had contributed to teachers’ decisions to quit the profession.

The lead author of the report, Johm Jerrim, a professor at the UCL institute of education, says that the teaching profession in England is currently in the middle of a crisis, and that its struggle to hire and retain enough teachers is partly    7     the pressures of the job.

“It has long been known that teaching is a stressful and challenging career and we wanted to see    8     the mental health and well-being of teachers had improved or declined,” he says.

The report admits that the increase in reported mental health problems is not specific to education, but can be seen in other professions,     9     human resources and accountancy.

It concludes, “In our view,     10     (pressing) issue is for the DfE to make a commitment to monitor the mental health and well-being of the teacher profession.”

For youngsters born with silver spoons in their mouths, living expenses never seem to be worth    1     (think)about. However, for college students who have just stepped into the real world, the cost of living can be a headache. When it comes to the precise amount of living expenses     2     should be given to the college students, a heated debate arises.

From my point of view, how much money a student should be given    3     (vary) from person to person. The average cost of living in the city    4     the university is located, the student’s ability to budget appropriately, as well as the economic capability of the parents should    5     (take)into consideration.

I    6     just became a boarder this semester, and each month I receive 1, 000 yuan for meals. For college students, however, many more factors come into play. So, in my humble opinion, for college students who study in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai, 2, 500 yuan each month ought to be a reasonable amount.

As a consequence of the improper management of living expenses, money shortages occur from time to time. Many college students tend to take up part-time jobs     7     (make)ends meet if they find the pocket money from their parents insufficient. But I strongly object to such behaviour, because it may mean    8     (take) away too much time from our studies, with the losses ending up outweighing the gains.

Students should always keep in mind that study is their top priority in college. When running into financial difficulties, we’d better turn to our parents for help. However,     9     giving the money without reservation, parents should deduct(扣除) the overdraft from their children’s pocket money for the following month, the aim of which is     10     (teach)the children a lesson on money management.

Literacy (读写能力) exactly changes the human brain. The process of learning to read changes our brain, but so does what we read, how we read and on what we read. This is especially important nowadays,     1     many people are tied to screens at any given moment.

We are still in the early stages of understanding the impact of digital-based learning    2     the development of children’s reading brains. Transforming new information into solid knowledge in the brain     3     (require) multiple connections to abstract reasoning skills. Each of    4     needs the kind of time and attention often absent in digital reading.

Researchers have found declines in students’ comprehension when they read the same information on screens rather than print. Yet readers thought themselves better on screens because they were “faster”. More than 80% of college educators see a “shallowing” effect by screens on their students’ reading comprehension, according to new research. Similar results     5    (find)in Israeli fifth and sixth graders recently.

The reasons are multiple, but they are not because deep reading is impossible on a screen. It is simply harder, because screens are linked with distraction (分散注意力的事), which in turn leads to less time     6     (give) to abstract thought.

The great challenge now is     7     (learn) how to use both print and digital media to their best advantage for all. As a society we must ensure that there are always books    8     our children’s digital devices. It doesn’t matter    9     the books are new or old, owned or borrowed from the library.     10     matters is that they are there, and that children are encouraged to read them.
