1 . Lucy Flores spends her days teaching preschool students how to read and write. After _________, the 23-year-old girl goes home and does the same for her 43-year-old dad, Luciano Flores. “I was thinking to myself. ‘Since I can teach these _________ to read and write, why can't I teach my father that?’ _________, we started about four months ago,” says Flores.

Growing up in Mexico, Luciano's family had _________ resources. The school he _________ didn't have much to spare, either. So, after about first grade, he _________ going to class and started working to _________ his family. He began a _________ in construction he continues to this day.

“His work hardly requires him to sign things,” Flores says of her father. “But he told nobody around him that he didn't have the _________.” Unlike her dad, Flores received a good ____________ in school. Last year, she became the first person in her family to ____________ from college.

A few months ago, Flores gave ____________ her dad a shot. Though ____________ at first, he was excited to start to learn. “That first day, I told him to write his name, but he didn't want to do it in front of me,” she recalls. “He chose to sit at the dining room table ____________, because he didn't want anyone to see.” After four months of ____________ together for two hours every time, three days a week, both were done with work. Flores reveals that her dad can ____________ write his name and even read some articles on his own. Witnessing her dad's ____________, Flores feels really ____________.

Meanwhile, Luciano shares that he's eager to ____________ learning to read and write. According to Flores, they're planning a trip to a local library together. “He's never been to a library,” she says. “I’m just wondering his ____________ to seeing a library full of books.”

4 . When I reflect back on what exactly inspired our Change-A-School-Project, a memory in particular stands out.

When I was in tenth grade, my school’s tennis team traveled to Hempstead High School for an away game. Entering the school, I was _______ to see the entrance fitted with metal detectors (金属探测器) and armed guards moving around the hallways — a _______ I had only seen on TV or on the news. _______, Hempstead High School was only a 20-minute drive away from my home.

After some research, I _______ that Hempstead wasn’t alone and these safety measures were _______ of a sense of trouble and unrest. In these schools, _______ filled a void (空虚感) in students’ lives early on — a void that was a typical example of a lack of _______.

By this time, I had achieved a wealth of _______ as a chess teacher; I knew what _______ effect chess could have on a child. I was able to ________ chess from a board game into a basic part of their lives. Why not ________ chess to these underprivileged students?

I ________ Change-A-School-Project and sent emails to school headmasters. However, it was two years later that a ________ came. Through a series of email exchanges and a generous ________ of 55 chess sets, chess was finally ________ into Wyandanch School. Soon, other schools followed quickly. I began to ________ a 3-hour training session every Thursday for 1st-3rd graders in these schools.

After a few sessions (学年) Wyandanch, I found that the impact I ________ for had been realized. These young ________ were beginning to spend their free time studying from their very own chess book and I kept ________ thank-yous from grateful parents.

We had finally ________ their void.

7 . The thing happened last year. The _________ was conducted compulsorily during the COVID-19 outbreak. Most people were forced to stay at home and many _________ their jobs. But one day I had to _________ to the company because of an emergency _________ , And that was when something memorable came into my eyes. It was the _________ of a boy standing on the road with a _________ in his hand. He seemed to be from an educated family from the _________ words on the large notice, which was why I gave it a second glance. It read, “ I need money badly for my mother’s _________ ! Thank you for your attention, dear friends! ”

I was anxious to catch up with the big meeting. _________ , I didn’t stop the car. Unemployment and poverty were a ( n ) __________ sight in the large city. No wonder we motorists drove by without __________ assistance. We were taught that giving money helped __________ a dependent lifestyle, or it made many people __________ to earn their living.

As I __________ away from the boy with that large notice, I was extremely ________ . Could it be a shame? What should I do? Turn back or move on? As I __________ with these questions, I saw a car __________ in front of the boy. A man got off his car and went to talk to the boy, “ Take the money and wish your mom a successful operation. ” __________ , the man lent the boy a hand. As I __________ , somebody else sprang into action and did what I could have done. Since then I’ve been __________ that it is important to do something for someone in need, whether it is big or small, because something is better than nothing!

9 . David is 99, but he still works four days a week — and has no plans to slow down any time soon.

David spends almost three hours each day ________ to and from the charity (慈善) shop where he ________. He makes the ________, which includes a 20-minute walk and two different ________, throughout the year in all weathers. He then works 8-10 hours at the St Columba’s Hospice shop, receiving ________, steaming clothes and helping customers to ________ the things they’re looking for.

David said that ________ was the secret to his long life. “If they ever ________ the shop, I don’t know what I would do — I couldn’t just sit in the house doing nothing. I will try my best to live as ________ as I can, and will only ________ working there when I fall down.”

David works with ________ agility (敏捷). Nobody believes he is 99. He keeps his mental agility in check by building model railways on his days off, which he then ________ for the charity.

So would David now think about living a more ________ life?

He said, “I went to a community club a couple of years ago. They were my ________ and had started playing cards, but then I noticed they had all fallen asleep half way through the ________ so I left. It wasn’t for me.”

I’ve always dreamed of having a copy machine that would let me go in as one person and come out as ______. That way, I could be in two places at once. Just like you, I recently made a promise to do one thing, and then another fun thing ______ up.

“Hey, Zona,” said my little sister, Indi, “we have an idea for the coolest Halloween costume, but we can’t do it ______ you.”

My little brother, Tex, pointed to a photo in a magazine. “It’s a pea pod! There are three kids and each kid’s face is a ______!”

“That’s so cute,” I said. “But I’m about 10 feet taller than you guys. There’s no way our heads would fit into the costume at the same time. Why don’t you two do a double pod instead?”

“I really wanted ______ of us to have a costume together,” said Indi.

“Maybe we can come up with a different group costume then,” I said.

“We could be the three little pigs!” said Indi. “You know, the ones who didn’t want the big bad wolf to huff and puff and blow their houses ______.”

“Yeah!” said Tex.

“I love that idea,” I said.

We found an old book of fairy tales and read “The Three Little Pigs.”

“I want to be the pig with the brick house!” said Tex.

“I want to be the pig with the ______ house!” said Indi.

“I guess I’ll be the pig with the stick house,” I said, smiling.

Making the costumes ______ a lot of work, even with our mom helping. And the whole time, Indi kept saying “Won’t it be so fun when we all go trick-or-treating?”

So you can see why there was no way in the world I could change plans when I received an ______ to a Halloween party at Stephany Morrison’s house. Stephany is a really nice girl from karate, and her house has incredible Halloween decorations every year. The invitation described the best party possible, with “gruesome games and creepy ______.”

“Why aren’t you eating your dinner?” my dad asked that night.

“I guess I’m not very hungry,” I mumbled.

“Only a week until Halloween!” Indi cheered.

“Yay!” I said, trying my best to ______ excited.

After helping with the dishes, I went to my room, ______ I read the invitation again. From 4:30 to 8:00 on Halloween night, come to Stephany’s house for some ______ and some fright! I sighed. I’d be leaving to trick-or-treat at 4:30.

That’s when it dawned on me. We were usually back from trick-or-treating around 6:00, so it was possible I’d still have time to make ______ to half of the party!

I returned to the kitchen to talk to my parents about it, and my dad agreed to drive me to Stephany’s ______ Tex and Indi and I came home.

On Halloween, I put on my stick-house pig costume and had the ______ time going door to door with my adorably excited pig siblings. Then I headed over to Stephany’s. By the time I arrived, the “eyeball” cookies were gone and I’d already ______ the “haunted house” tour. But the “poison apples” were delicious, and I wasn’t too late to play some of those “gruesome games.”

So, dear Just One Kid, it’s ______ to happen once in a while that something comes up after you’ve agreed to something else. And it’s important to do the right thing and stick to your promise. But at times, you might be able to find a way to do both, like I did.

Maybe you can see ______ your friends would go to the movies on a different day. Or, if they’re doing something after the movie, maybe you can ______ them for that part. It never hurts to ask, right? And if it doesn’t work out, there’s always next time!
