Around twenty years ago, I was going through hard times. I couldn’t find a    1    (satisfy) job. To my shame, I had to drive a school bus    2    (make) ends meet. One afternoon, while    3    (drive) through a suburban neighborhood, I was so sad that I kept asking    4    (I), “Why has my life become so hard?

What’s wrong with the world?” Then I pulled over the bus to drop off a little girl. As she passed, she    5    (hand) me a pretty earring, saying she found it on the floor and I should keep it in case the owner came to look for it. In the evening, the owner did come to look for her earring.

When I gave it to her, she got excited and said    6    (excited), “Thanks, you are a real gentleman.” I told her that she should thank the little girl    7    had found it. She said, “Yes, and you are a good driver, too. What a lovely world    8    is!” Then she left with satisfaction. I    9    (touch) by her words. I had thought something was wrong with the world just because of my poor condition. In fact, nothing was wrong with the world. I should change my attitude    10    life.

Once there lived a rich man     1    wanted to do something for the people of his town.    2     first he wanted to find out whether they deserved his help.

In the centre of the main road into the town, he placed    3    very large stone. Then he     4    (hide ) behind a tree and waited. Soon an old man came along with his cow.

“Who put this stone in the centre of the road?” said the old man, but he did not try to remove the stone. Instead, with some difficulty he passed around the stone and continued on his way.    5    man came along and did the same thing; then another came,and another. All of them complained about the stone but not tried to remove     6    . Late in the afternoon a young man came along. He saw the stone,    7    (say) to himself: “The night    8    (be) very dark. 3 . I was walking with a friend yesterday     1     I found a cellphone in a pile of snow. I picked     2     up and it still worked! I started looking through the name list and dialing numbers to see whether I could figure out whose phone it was.     3     (luck), only one person answered and she didn't recognize the number.

Since that lady didn't know whose phone it was, my friend suggested that we go back to     4     house that we found the cellphone in front of. I knocked on the door and two college­age persons answered. They     5     (lose) their phones, but as I told them the story and mentioned some     6    (name) on the name list, the young man said that he also had those names and it     7     be the phone of their friends. I really didn't have anything to say, because in my mind I was just doing the right thing. I     8     (immediate) tried to find the owner, because that is exactly     9     I would want someone to do if either I or any of my family members lost phones. The purpose of helping others is not for return.     10     (help) others is more than enough for me and it is the most endless joy of life.
