1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I lay on the floor angrily kicking my legs and shouting — all because my foster (寄养的) mother had asked me to put my toys away.

“I hate you,” I shouted. I was six years old and didn’t understand why I felt so angry all the time.

I’d been living in foster care since I was two, because my real mom couldn’t give me the care I needed. I didn’t know how to tell people that I hurt inside. Throwing a tantrum (发脾气) was the only way I knew to express my feelings.

Because I acted up finally my current foster mom sent me back to the adoption agency (收养机构), just as the mom before had. I thought I was the most unlovable girl in the world.

Then I met Kate McCann. I was seven by that time and living with my third foster family when she came to visit. When my foster mother told me that Kate was single and wanted to adopt a child, I didn’t think she’d choose me. I couldn’t imagine anyone would want me to live with them forever. That day, Kate took me to a farm. We had fun, but I didn’t think I’d see her again.

Kate visited a few days later and said I could move in with her soon. I was excited but afraid, too. I wondered if she’d change her mind once she got to know me. Kate sensed my fear. “I know you’ve been hurt,” she said, hugging (拥抱) me. “I know you’re afraid. But I promise I’ll never send you away. We’re a family now.”

So I moved in with Kate. She let me have pets and gave me piano lessons. Every day, she told me she loved me. But love wasn’t enough to heal (治愈) the hurt inside me. I kept waiting for her to change her mind. I tried to hurt her before she could hurt me. I picked fights over little things and threw tantrums when I didn’t get my way. But she never lost patience. She’d hug me and say she loved me anyway.

One day Emily was walking in the yard when she heard a noise.

“Who’s there?” she immediately asked.

“Squeak (吱吱声)!”

The voice came again. This time she thought that she’d rather walk around and check where the voice was coming from.

She went behind a tree and stared (盯着看).

A squirrel (松鼠) was standing there! There were no squirrels in her yard so she decided that she would take this squirrel home and feed it.

The poor squirrel must have got lost, she thought.

She entered her house. Her mother was making a cake.

“Who’s that cake for, Mom?” Emily said.

“Oh, have you forgotten?” her mother asked in surprise.

“Forgotten what?” Emily wondered.

“By the way, what’s that in your hand?” her mother asked.

“Mom, I found this poor squirrel behind a tree. Can we please feed it and keep it as our pet?” asked Emily. “Or it won’t be able to live, since there aren’t any things for a squirrel in the yard.”

“Okay, and if you are responsible, then we’ll also get you another pet, one that you want,” her mother said.

The next morning was bright and Emily thought that she would give the squirrel a bath. Her mother said that she would help her.

They had decided to call the squirrel “Butter”. Now they were in the bathroom, ready to bathe Butter.

“Mom, I’m done with the water! Should we start now?” Emily asked.

“Of course,” her mom replied.

Emily put Butter in warm water. Then her mother took out some body wash. She rubbed (抹) it on Butter with Emily. Soon after its bath, Butter was perfectly clean.

“Oh my! That was hard work!” Emily said.

The next day, Emily decided to take Butter to the park with her parents. When they reached a big and perfect park, her mother took out a shopping bag. When she opened it, it was a cake!

Whether a thing is worth doing or not really depends on how you look at it. If we always ignore our own intention, we will obviously feel unhappy. Thus, take all your courage and do something your heart tells you to do so that you may not regret doing it later in life.

The following story happened in a battlefield during the World War I. The soldiers from two sides were fighting against each other fiercely and there was no sign for the war to stop. All of a sudden terror attacked the heart of Peter, one of the French soldiers, as he saw his friend—Tom, who was born in the same village as him and had played with him happily and joined the army at the same time falling in the battle. Caught in the trenches (战壕) with continuous gunfire whizzing (嗖嗖地移动) over his head, Peter was lost in thought. He couldn’t decide whether he should lend a hand to Tom. Eventually he gathered all his courage and asked his officer if he could be allowed to go out into the“No Man’s Land” between the trenches to bring his helpless partner back because he thought there might be some chances of saving him.

“You can certainly go,“ said the officer, who couldn’t understand why Peter had made such a crazy request,“but I don’t think it will be worth it. As you know, your friend is probably dead and if you rush out of the trenches you may possibly throw your own life away.”

Considering the situations of the war, what the officer said really made sense because he didn’t want Peter to risk doing so. However, the officer’s words didn’t matter to Peter, and he had obviously made up his mind and he went anyway bravely.

Paragraph 1:

Much to the officers surprise, Peter managed to reach his friend.

Jayce began noticing when he was in kindergarten that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands while he had one. Due to his young age, Jayce was encouraged that he was just like an angel with one wing folded to prepare for something.

It started when one boy laughed at him. From that day, little Jayce became sad. He returned home with questions. “Why am I different? Why me? Why?” He cried and asked his mother Lewis. Seeing Jayce was mad, the poor mother felt it a huge dagger (匕首) to her heart. What made her more sorrowful was that she didn’t know what to do at that point and how to give answers to her son’s questions which she could never find out herself. The white lie burst just like bubbles that day.

A few weeks later, Lewis turned on the TV and saw a news story where she was shocked to find out the answer. It was Trashaun, an eighth grader, who had a similar disability but led a brilliant life, that displayed positive energy from head to toe. The 14-year-old sunny boy performed his slam dunks(灌篮) on the TV, who had been a hit on the Internet. However, like Jayce, he had missed most of his left arm since his childhood! Lewis called her son Jayce in. The poor little boy got spellbound, watching dunks after dunks.

At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce. He saw Trashaun as a tough role model and Lewis felt quite happy. But little did she know that a relative had already contacted Trashaun, inviting him to have a meeting with Jayce to help rebuild Jayce’s confidence.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

At eleven years old, my main concern was money. On my bedroom floor, I arranged the change from my money box to see what I had. I wished it’d multiply before my eyes, but of course it didn’t. To have more money, I decided to work for my grandmother.

After school, my grandmother drove to pick me up. About an hour later, we arrived at the pick-up kitchen and got dozens of little shiny silver trays (托盘). After our load was arranged in the backseat, my grandmother drove us to our first stop: a small white house. I took a meal and a small box of milk from the back and walked beside my grandmother to the door. She opened it and said, “Mrs. Hershel, we’ve brought you some lunch.” The reply came, “Come on in.”

I nearly jumped when I glanced over to see a tiny old woman in the corner looking at me. She sat in a rocking chair and had many wrinkles. When I approached her, she smiled at me, with no teeth. My grandmother guided me inside to place the lunch on her kitchen table. The house smelled bad.

The next stop was much the same and the next. The houses varied in size and shape, but the same wrinkly people waited for their meals. Each person smiled at me and thanked me as I hurried to get out of there. I was sweaty and tired, and my clothes had captured the bad smell of the food and old houses.

At the end of the day, I guessed it was obvious to my grandmother that I wasn’t very comfortable about the job anymore. “You don’t have to help me,” she said. “I understand if the job isn’t what you want to do.” I swallowed hard, wandering what to say. “For many of the people we deliver lunch to, this is their only meal of the day. Many of them are alone,” my grandmother continued. Seeing my eyes widen, my grandmother smiled, “But a kind word and a smile go a long way.”

Social networking dominates our life in so many ways. I am the one who is addicted to it. Sometimes I set deadlines for myself : I will start doing my homework at 8 pm and finish it in two hours. At 7:50 pm, I’m scrolling through my friends’ silly posts and photos. Before I know it, it’s 9:30 pm and I haven’t moved an inch from the sofa. I download song after song, video after video, but I’m not really paying attention. The stimulation is in chasing after the next song or video rather than truly enjoying it. Since I spend so much time socialising online, I keep delaying things that are important in my real life: homework, tasks, my good friends and so on. Especially, I miss connecting with my family members in a meaningful way. So it is with my sister.

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落的开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Melia and her father had just finished building a tree house in the backyard. Melia, an artist, wanted to decorate the walls, and instead of buying things, she decided to make her own art.

Melia enjoyed making collages (拼贴画). For her tree house, she thought she would use pictures from magazines. She could collect used magazines from neighbors, so the pictures would be free. And to create all her favorite things, she could add pretty leaves, and fruits of pine trees from the yard.

For several days, Melia collected bits of nature to use for the collage. Melia collected magazines from the neighbors. She piled both on the front entry, as her plan was to finish the art over the weekend. Oddly, though, when she added to the piles each day, many of the sticks and leaves were gone, and the pile of magazines was a mess.

“Dad? Mom?” Melia asked. “Have either of you been taking the supplies for my collage off the entry?”

“No, why on Earth would we do that?” her dad answered with a question.

“I don’t know, but what I do know is that someone is ruining my art project! It’s my mission to find out who and why!” Melia declared.

Who would want to steal this stuff? She had a plan. She cleaned up the rest of the leaves and threw the ruined magazines in the recycling bin. She started collecting old magazines again, hoping to set a trap. Even if she had to stay up all night, Melia was determined to solve the case.

Once she had collected a large pile of magazines, Melia formed several piles at the front door. She placed them close to the window so that she could catch the thief. She asked her parents if she could sleep on the sofa. “I know they’re used magazines, but I need them for my art project. I have to solve this case!”

Melia was determined to catch the thief, but she had a difficult time staying awake. Within a few hours, she had nodded off.

Just as the sun was rising, a slight scratching (挠) sound a woke her.

Daniel got a job as a delivery man to work his way through college. His parents couldn’t save up all the money he needed to get into law school, so since he was 16, he has been taking summer jobs to earn extra money.

The boy usually wakes up at 5 am in summer or winter, riding his rusty (生锈的)old bike delivering packages. It isn’t an easy job, especially during winter. Besides that, his old bike is slow, making things harder. But that isn’t a problem for Daniel. ”Come on, boy! We can do this, “he says to himself.

Daniel’s route is always the same and people in the neighborhood have already known him. He calls them by their names, and they often wave and greet him as he passes.

One day, Daniel came to McReynolds’ house. He parked his bike at the doorstep. He rang the doorbell but no one answered. He tried again, still no answer. Then he left the parcel at the doorstep.

As Daniel jumped back on his bike, he noticed his bike broken down. ”Bad luck!“But as he turned around, he saw a strange man secretly looked around and placed a package under his jacket. Daniel shouted at the man, ”Hey there! What are you doing? That’s not yours!“

The man saw Daniel and started to run. Daniel looked at his broken bike helplessly and ran fast after the man, shouting, ”Stop!Thief!“When the man saw that Daniel was gaining on him, he threw the package at him. Daniel caught it, but he didn’t give up the chase. Then the man tripped over a stone and fell on the floor. Daniel came a few seconds later and got him.

The ruckus (喧闹) alarmed all the neighbors. Then the police were called. McReynolds came out from the house, ”I couldn’t get the door when you rang because I was taking a shower. Thank you for stopping him!“ Daniel smiled back at her and was turning around to leave.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When my daughter Lily reached the fourth grade, I occasionally allowed her to walk to and from school alone. One warm spring day, a small friend followed her home after school. This friend had short stumpy legs and long floppy ears. She was the cutest puppy I had ever seen. And Lily begged me to keep her.

I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost-and-found (失物招领处) but I really didn’t want to. It would break Lily’s heart if someone showed up. Besides, her owners should have watched her more closely, I told myself.

By the end of the week she was part of our family. She was very intelligent and good with Lily. This was a good idea, I thought. We had named the puppy Molly. She followed us everywhere we went. When we went outside, she was one step behind us. When we were back from school or work, she greeted us by wagging her tail and barking cheerfully. When we did chores, she was there to lend a hand, or rather, a paw. It seemed as if she had belonged to us long before.

The following week something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular ad jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was begging for the return of a lost puppy near the school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I couldn’t bring myself to pick up the phone. But my conscience (良心) was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the puppy they were desperately seeking. But it was the most difficult thing I’d ever done.

Finally, with sweaty palms, I lifted the phone and dialed. A woman answered. As I described the dog to her in detail, her voice shook with excitement and she wanted to come right over. Within minutes I heard a vehicle pull up at the driveway and some footsteps stop at the door. Head cradled in my hands and heart hammering, a thousand thoughts crossed my mind: I could pretend I wasn’t home or tell her, “I’m sorry, you have the wrong address.” But it was too late: the bell rang and Molly was barking.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One summer when I was ten years old,my brother and I received a wonderful gift — tennis rackets (球拍) and balls. We had never had the opportunity to play tennis, so this was exciting. However, there was one problem — the small town we lived in did not have a tennis court (网球场).

One Saturday morning my brother said, “Hey, I’ve got an idea.Let’s take our tennis rackets and balls to the school and hit the balls against the school building.”

“Great idea! Let’s go,” I agreed, not realizing what a lesson we would learn.

When we got to the school ground, no one was around, so we began hitting our balls against the side of the building. “I’ll hit it the first time,” my brother suggested,“then you hit it the next time. We’ll hit it back and forth to each other.” So we began taking turns hitting the ball, getting more confident with each hit. Actually, we became pretty good at returning the ball and we were hitting the ball higher and faster each time. Suddenly, the unexpected thing happened — the ball got out of control and went crashing through one of the upstairs windows, leaving lots of broken glass on the ground. We looked around and no one was in sight except there was a guard sitting there over a distance.

Quietly, I asked, “Now what should I do?”

“Well,” my brother answered, “no one saw us, except that old man down there. And he probably can’t see this far.”

“He probably doesn’t know who we are anyway... Let’s go home,” I added.

As we picked up the rest of our balls and went home, we discussed whether to tell Mom and Dad what had happened. Would we be punished for our mistakes? Would every penny we had saved go to pay for the window? Or just keep it a secret? We thought about all these things all the way.
