1 . He must have been completely lost in something he was reading because I had to tap on the car window to get his attention. “Is your car available?” I asked when he finally looked up at me. He nodded, then said apologetically as I settled into the back seat, “I’m sorry, but I was reading a letter.” He sounded as if he had a cold. “I am not in a hurry,” I told him. “Go ahead and finish your letter.” He shook his head. “I’ve read it several times already. I guess I almost know it by heart.” “Letters from home always mean a lot,” I said.
“This isn’t family,” he replied. “Although it might just as well have been family, Old Ed was my oldest friend. In fact, we used to call each other ‘Old Friend’— when we’d meet. I’m not much good at writing.”
“I don’t think any of us keep up our correspondence (通信) very well,” I said. “I know I don’t, but I take it he’s someone you’ve known quite a while?”
“All my life. We were kids together, went to school together and all the way through high school.” “There are not too many people who’ve had such a long friendship,” I said. “Actually,” the driver went on, “I hadn’t seen him more than once or twice a year over the past 25 or 30 years because I moved away from the old neighborhood and you kind of lose touch even though you never forget.”
“You said ‘was’. Does that mean ?” he nodded. “A couple of weeks ago.” “I’m sorry.”
He didn’t say anything more, and we rode on in silence for a few minutes. But I realized that Old Ed was still on his mind when he spoke again, almost more to himself than to me. “I should have kept in contact with him.” “Well,” I agreed, “we should all keep in touch with old friends more than we do. But things come up and we just don’t seem to find the time.”
When I got to my hotel room I didn’t unpack right away. First I had to write a letter — and mail it.

Cody and his sister April decide they want to have a pet dog. They head down to the local pet store and have a look around. It is a very small pet store that does not have many animals.
The owner of the shop is a nice old man named Mr. Smith. He walks over and greets Cody and April.
“How can I help you?” he asks.
“We would like to buy a dog,” April responds.
“Ah, well, we are not a big pet shop,”Mr. Smith tells her. “So we only have two dogs to choose from.”
They ask Mr. Smith to show them the dogs.
Mr. Smith leads them to the back of the store where the two dogs are. One of them is a very big Bulldog(斗牛狗) named Buster. It looks strong and fierce. The other is a very tiny Chihuahua(奇瓦瓦狗) named Teacup. It looks cute and lovely.
April wants Teacup the Chihuahua, while Cody wants Buster the Bulldog. To make a decision, they walk outside to discuss.
Even after they have a discussion, they cannot agree on a dog. April suggests they race home for it. The winner of the race will choose the dog.
Cody agrees. Before the race starts, Cody tells April that her shoelace is untied. When April looks down, he runs off and gets a head start.
Cody runs as hard as he can. He really wants that Bulldog as a pet. He looks back. April is so far behind he cannot even see her.
Cody finally gets home. He is tired but he is happy. He knows he is the winner.

4 . School children across the United States have been taking part in local and state spelling competitions. These competitions are called spelling bees. The young competitors spell words that even some adults may never have heard of.
More than 280 local winners will earn the right to compete in this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee. The event will take place from May 28 to June 3 near Washington, D.C., at the National Harbor in Maryland.
Most competitors in the National Spelling Bee are between the ages of 12 and 14. But this year, one competitor will be less than half that age — five-year-old Edith Fuller.
Last weekend, she won an area spelling bee in her home state of Oklahoma. The five-hour competition lasted 37 rounds. Edith correctly spelled words like sevruga(闪光鲟鱼子酱), jacamar (a kind of bird), and Nisei (a child of Japanese immigrants).
Her winning word? Jnana, a Sanskrit(梵语的) word that is related to having a higher level of knowledge. Remember, Edith is five. She is the youngest person ever to qualify for the National Spelling Bee.
Not so long ago, when she was just four, Edith surprised her parents when she was able to spell the word “restaurant”. At that moment, her mom and dad realized their child might have a mental gift.
Edith is home-schooled. So, her parents are able to spend a little more time teaching her to spell.
About two percent of US children are home-schooled. Yet, home-schooled kids usually make up 8 to 10 percent of those who make it to the National Spelling Bee.
Now, the Fullers must prepare young Edith for the national bee. But no matter how she does there, Edith is already being called a “spellebrity”.

It was New Year’s Eve. I was 15 and feeling sad because there was not enough money to buy the dress I wanted. We did the housework early that night, so I thought Dad wanted extra time for us to spend together. Instead, he dressed himself again and went outside. “Come on, Elizabeth,” he said. “Dress yourself warmly. It’s cold out.”
Outside, I became even more annoyed. Not only wasn’t I getting the dress; now Dad was pulling me out in the cold. Whatever we were going to do wasn’t going to be a quick job. I unwillingly climbed up beside Dad, the cold already biting me. We pulled in front of the woodshed(柴棚),and started loading (装载)wood. Finally, I asked, “Dad, what are you doing?” “Have you been by Mrs. Clark’s lately?” he asked.
Mrs. Clark lived about two miles down the road from us. Her husband had passed away the year before, leaving her and three children to raise on her own. “Yeah,” I said. “Why?” “I rode by just today,” Dad said. “Little Jake was out digging around in the woodpile, trying to find a few pieces of wood. They’re out of wood, Elizabeth.”
That was all he said. Dad then went to the smokehouse and took down a side of bacon, telling me to go load it. He returned carrying a large bag of flour(面粉) over his right shoulder and a smaller bag of something in his left hand. “What’s in the little bag?” I asked. “Shoes . They’re out of shoes. I got the children a box of candies, too. It just wouldn’t be New Year without some candy. ”I tried to think through what Dad was doing. We did have a big woodpile, meat and flour, so we could give some, but I knew we didn’t have any money. Mrs. Clark had closer neighbors than us. Why should we care?
We unloaded the wood behind the Clarks’ house and knocked on the door. It opened a crack(缝隙), and a fearful voice said, “Who is it?” “James Cotton, ma’am, and my daughter, Elizabeth. Could we come in for a bit?”
