The icy wind howled across the empty street and it was an unusually quiet day in the emergency room on December 25th. Quiet, that is, except for the nurses who were standing around the nurses’ station complaining about having to work on Christmas Day.
I was a guiding nurse that day and had just done the cleanup in the waiting room. Since there were no patients waiting to be seen at the time, I returned to the nurses’ station for a cup of hot coffee that someone had brought in for Christmas. Just then, a colleague came in and told me I had five patients waiting to be evaluated.
I was surprised, “Five? How did I get five? I was just out there and no one was in the waiting room.”
“Well, there are five signed in. ”
So I went straight out and called the first name. Five bodies showed up at my guiding desk, a pale short woman and four small children in untidy clothing.
“Are you all sick?” I asked. “Yes, " she said weakly and lowered her head.
“Okay, ” I replied. “Who’s first?” One by one they sat down, and I asked the usual beginning questions. When it came to the description of their symptoms, things got a little vague(含糊的). Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren’t accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough, but seemed to work to produce it.
Something was wrong with the picture. Suddenly I knew something. So I explained to the mother that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her because there were several more critical patients. she responded, “Take your time. It’s warm here and there is a Christmas tree.”

2 . We’ve all had cases where we’ve waited just a bit too long to pay an electric bill or speeding ticket. But one man, from California by reasonable assumption, who goes by “Dave”,recently took procrastination (拖延) one step further, by paying a parking ticket almost a half-century after it was given.
In December 2018, the Minersville Police Department in Pennsylvania received a letter in the mail. Whoever wrote the letter decided it was best to keep his name somewhat unknown,so he put the return address as “Wayward Road,Anytown California” under the name “Feeling guilty”.
When the officers opened the envelope, they found a brief letter, along with a $5 bill, and a parking ticket dating all the way back to 1974. The note read,“Dear PD,I've been carrying this ticket around for 40 plus years always intending to pay. Forgive me if I don't give you my info. With respect,Dave.”
Even though the initial parking ticket was only for $2, “Dave” must have felt awfully guilty because he left 150 percent,or $3, in interest.
Michael Combs, the Police Chief of the Minersville Police Department, stated in an interview that the same ticket would cost about $20 if it were given today. Combs went on to share that the original ticket from 1974 was given to a vehicle that had an Ohio license plate.
Because there was no system for tracking tickets given to out-of-state cars back then,“Dave” could have gotten away with never paying the $2 fine. But apparently, guilt got the best of him,and he decided to finally cough up the money more than 40 years past its due date.

4 . When one California construction worker, Colin Blevin arrived at work at around 7 a.m. on Monday morning, he noticed a car was blocking the entrance-way to the construction site. While asking the driver to move, Colin spotted a baby in a car seat. “He moved the car and I pulled in,” Blevin said. “The back door was cracked open and I saw a baby.”
Blevin had no idea that earlier that morning, a car with a 1-year-old had been stolen about 90 miles away while the baby’s father ran inside to order his lunch. “I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t know initially the baby was in danger and there was an AMBER Alert(警报),” Blevin said.
Even though everything appeared pretty normal, Blevin’s instincts told him something was wrong. After parking his car, a local woman walked over and confirmed his suspicions. The lady told him quietly, “Help me save this baby.” She said, “You have to save this baby. The guy tried to give it to me.” He looked into the car and there was a beautiful chunky baby looking at him. The baby was calm, clean, with a bottle on his chest.
Blevin met the man, 44-year-old Raymond Randy Gutierrez, and asked whose baby was in the car. “He said a lady gave him the car and left the baby in the car,” Blevin said. “And right away I thought that makes no sense. The baby was well taken care of and this guy was dirty, skinny and nervous.” Blevin grabbed the baby from the car and Gutierrez ran away when he called 911. Police caught Gutierrez later that day and were able to reunite the baby with his parents.

6 . Amanda Seyfried didn’t grow up with dogs. With her busy work schedule, she didn’t think she could take care of a dog. In fact, she wasn’t looking for a furry friend at all.
But then she met Finn. Today, the 34-year-old actress, who’s known for films Mamma Mia, is a dog owner and a spokeswoman at the welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society.
“I can’t imagine my life without him,” Seyfried says of 6.5-year-old Australian shepherd Finn, who is allowed on her U.S. set. If for some reason he can’t join Seyfried on location --- like on a recent trip when she traveled from France to China, Seyfried requests from her dog sitter twice — daily videos of him.
Now with a new video for Best Friends Animal Society, she calls herself Finn’s “stage mother.”
Seyfried and Finn shot an 80s-themed video for the 9000StepsChallenge, which asks animal owners to walk 9,000 steps with their pets on the ninth day of the month to raise awareness to the fact that more than 9,000 dogs and cats are euthanized (安乐死) in shelters each day because there’s not enough room.
As for the video shoot, in which Seyfried and Finn walked the 9,000 steps --- it was more exhausting than a long walk. Seyfried was Finn’s trainer on the shoot. She believes that instead of being Finn’s cp-star, she’ll go back to being BFFs.

8 . It was the week before Christmas, and the line at the post office snaked twice around the lobby(大厅). It seemed that no one was moving. The office looked like an exhibit in the Postal Wax Museum. I came to the self-service machine where the line was much shorter.
I don’t like self-service. I tell people it’s because I don’t approve of taking jobs away from people, but the real problem is that I’m not good at it. The machine always asks me something I don’t know the answer to. I hate this. I am a retired letter carrier, and we moved mail in the old-fashioned way hand to hand, human to human. We were fast, friendly, and frequently accurate.
The woman in the front of the line was clicking away at the screen. And the clicks were surprisingly loud. Any signs of hesitation on her part were telegraphed to the whole lobby. I felt sorry for her: The machine could smell fear. The next person took a long time, too. I breathed deeply. By the time it was my turn, I had the heart rate of a yogi(瑜伽修行者).
Under the weight of concern from the people in line behind me, I felt a growing obligation to minimize the seconds between clicks. Finally it was time to slide in a credit card. The machine didn’t take it. “Try putting it in the other way” the gentleman behind me suggested. No good.
“I’ve got a different card,” I said, and fished around for that one, beginning to sweat. The machine wanted a PIN, but not the one I suggested.
“Start over.” I clicked, intending to try the first card again.
Oh no. I had to start all over again.
“I’ m sorry,” I said, looking back, sheepish. “I guess I don't know what I’m doing. You all go ahead.”
“Don’t give up,” said the nice man behind me. “Try it again. We’re all friends here, right?”
Smiles were blooming all down the line. I tried again, clicked with deliberation and sincerity, and introduced my credit card as though I were presenting it to the queen. Finally, I made it!
I couldn’t have been happier. Everyone burst into applause. Comfort and joy!
