2 . In 2010, my mother-in-law gave me her rather simple but graceful, antique “secretary desk”. The desk easily fit into the tiny room at the top of the stairs. I felt so secure, and confident when I sat down and began each writing session. Despite the desk’s appeal, its limited storage capacity meant that I often put file folders and books on the small floor space around me. After each writing session, I painstakingly gathered the tools of the trade and placed them on a nearby shelf until the next session.

A few years into my writing journey, we moved into a bigger home and I acquired my own office. My husband, Bill offered on more than one occasion to buy me a new desk for my office, but I ignored his offer.

One day, we stopped at the local office supply store. Bill found what he thought was the perfect desk for me. “I want to buy this for you, sweetie. My writer needs a bigger desk. ”He hugged me.

“Thanks, but I don’t want a bigger desk!” I said.

“Why don’t you want a bigger desk?” he said. “You must be afraid of something.”

“I’m not afraid of anything,” I said. “Like I said, I really like my little desk. So don’t ask me again.”

He didn’t.

A few weeks later, while working in my new office. I looked around at the folders, books and papers lying all over my office floor but couldn’t find what needed to meet a contest deadline. My heart raced. I looked around my office. The room basically swallowed the tiny desk, making it look slightly out of place. Maybe I did need a bigger desk. Was Bill right? Was I afraid of something?

Unable to write, I pulled c. JoyBell C.’s book of poetry, All Things Dance Like Dragonflies (蜻蜓), from the bookshelf. I flipped through its pages, and her words about faith jumped off the page into my heart. She talked about how she had trained herself to love the feeling of not knowing where she was going, and just trusting that as she opened up her wings and flew off in an unknown direction, things would work out.

At that moment, I recognized that a bigger desk symbolized bigger possibilities, stepping out in faith, and leaving my comfort zone.

A.It was too old to be functional.
B.It competed with the shelf for room.
C.It prevented the author focusing on writing.
D.It was a bit small in size.
2. When did the author want to buy a new desk?

B.When she finished writing a book.
C.When she moved into a bigger house.
D.After she missed an important contest.
3. What was the author afraid of before?
A.Unemployment.B.Loss of inspiration.
C.Uncertainty.D.Lack of trust.
4. What would be the best title of the passage?
A.My Writing JourneyB.On the Wings of Change
C.My Lifelong FaithD.On the Desk of Fate

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了6岁男孩代养了一只宠物狗,到其被收养时,给收养家庭写信表达自己的爱与不舍的故事。

4 . Pet adoption is the perfect way to add a new family member. But if a pet is too young to be adopted, it must be fostered (寄养) first. That’s how a puppy named Maggie that was rescued by the North Shore Animal League America (NSALA), ended up being fostered by a sweet six-year-old boy.

The animal rescue organization in Port Washington needed to find a foster home for Maggie because she needed to be trained with basic obedience (顺从) skills and to become comfortable with a home environment. NSALA put out a call for a foster family.

Roman Duncan’s family was the lucky one chosen for the job. The boy fell in love with the puppy and was able to be part of her growth during those formative months. The family always made it clear to Roman that Maggie would eventually be adopted and move to a different home.

When it came time for Maggie to be adopted, Roman couldn’t hold his tears. He decided to write letters to the puppy’s future family. He wrote letters about his furry friend, saying “Maggie is so cute and loves to play fetch. She is the best dog ever,” and slipped the notes and some photos into Maggie’s paperwork.

The rescue team were surprised and then incredibly touched by the notes they found when opening Maggie’s file. NSALA made sure that Roman’s notes reached her adopted family. The boy’s gesture is exactly what pet fostering is about.

A dog or cat that has gone through terrible sufferings such as being abusing needs to learn what it means to live in a home. Fostering helps reduce the animal’s stress and makes it trust people again. It is also an opportunity for people who love pets but can’t have them full-time due to some restrictions. Pet fosters can get to enjoy helping a pet in need. If you are interested in pet fostering, contact a local shelter or animal rescue near you.

1. What happened to Maggie at first?
A.She was released into the wild.B.She was settled in a new home.
C.She was saved by a rescue team.D.She was fostered by Roman’s family.
2. Why did Roman write notes about Maggie?
A.To express his mixed feelings.B.To preserve Maggie’s paperwork.
C.To choose Maggie’s future family.D.To help Maggie adapt to new home.
3. What is mainly discussed in the last paragraph?
A.The benefits of pet fostering.B.The access to fostering a pet.
C.A homeless animal’s barriers.D.The restrictions to adopting a pet.
4. What is the best title of the text?
A.Maggie Lives Happily in a Comforting Foster Home
B.A Boy Writes Sweet Letter to Puppy’s Forever Family
C.Pet fostering Plays Great Roles in Rescuing Lost Animals
D.Roman Duncan’s Family Adopts a new Family Member

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了昆曲艺术家王芳的个人简介,以及她学习昆曲的求学之路,通过艰苦学习,最后才获得梅花表演家的称号。

5 . Wang Fang, a Suzhou native, has given her heart and soul to Kunqu Opera. Wang, who has twice won the Plum Performance Award — China’s top award for theater and opera performances-started to learn the traditional art form in 1977.

Born with a melodic voice, Wang loved to sing and dance when she was little. She performed frequently, and was recruited by the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Troupe (剧团) when she was in middle school. However, her parents refused the troupe’s invitation, insisting that she should concentrate on her studies and not drop out of school. After members of the troupe visited the parents repeatedly and showed great sincerity,Wang’s parents finally agreed.

Learning the traditional art form was never easy. She started to learn how to pronounce words, sing them lyrically and make gestures gently. As an actress playing martial artists roles at first, she had to spend extra time practicing kung fu movements. Years later, Wang used the word “unimaginable” to describe how hard the days were when she first learned Kunqu. She was soaked in sweat when practicing movements in summer, while in winter she often had chilblains (冻疮) on her hands when training in shabby classrooms with broken windows. “But I was young and determined at the time. No matter how difficult, I always got up early the next morning to practice,” Wang recalls.

Wang says she did not love Kunqu at first, but in her early 20s,when she watched the show Peony Pavilion performed by Zhang Jiqing, a master of the art form, it clicked. “I was shocked,” Wang says. “Her every movement was full of elegance and delicacy. Each of her lines and songs was perfect. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of Kunqu for the first time in my life, and it has stayed with me since.” Now, Wang has herself become a master of Kunqu. Her performances have impressed generations and helped to promote the art form among young people.

1. Why did Wang’s parents turn down the troupe’s invitation at first?
A.They didn’t think Wang had artistic talent.
B.They saw no future in learning Kunqu Opera.
C.They didn’t want Wang to ignore her studies.
D.They regarded members of the troupe as insincere.
2. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A.Wang has made great efforts to learn Kunqu well.
B.Artists should be given more attention and care.
C.Traditional culture needs to be further promoted.
D.Wang has played a key role in the development of Kunqu.
3. What changed Wang’s attitude towards Kunqu Opera?
A.Winning the Plum Performance Award.
B.Joining the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Troupe.
C.Watching Zhang’s masterly performance.
D.Being greatly admired by the audience.
4. What does Wang’s story show us?
A.It is never too late to learn.B.Rome was not built in a day.
C.Doing is better than saying.D.Don’t judge a book by its cover.

I was already very tired and had an important call scheduled for an hour after I was set to get home. But then I heard the announcement, “It seems we have overbooked the flight. Would anyone care to volunteer to stay for the later departure in 4 hours?” And the gate attendant was anxiously waiting for someone to volunteer.
