1 . Jeremy Savage, aged 17, and Ian Marshall, aged 16, went to the Rocky Mountains with their parents for the weekend. On Saturday morning, the two boys decided to climb Cathedral Mountain by themselves while their parents relaxed at the campsite. After three hours, they reached the top with no problems.

However, trouble began when they started the climb down the mountain. On one very dangerous part of the path, Ian fell three metres off the side of the path. Jeremy was able to climb down to where Ian was. Ian was badly injured and could not move. Jeremy had to decide what to do. He needed help, but he did not want to leave his friend. He used water from his own bottle to clean the dirt and blood from Ian’s face and hands. He tried to help Ian stand up, but Ian’s right leg was hurting too much. They had to wait and hope that someone would come and help them.

When the boys did not return to the campsite that evening, their parents became very worried. They got in touch with park workers and began searching for the boys. Soon more than 20 people were looking for the boys.

As night fell, the boys were still missing. While they waited for help to arrive, Jeremy gave Ian his food and water and he let Ian lie on his jacket so he would be more comfortable. As the evening grew darker, Ian told Jeremy to leave him and go back to their parents, but he still did not leave. Jeremy thought it was too dangerous for Ian to be alone. The night was cold and windy, and Jeremy used his jacket and an extra shirt to keep Ian warm.

At sunrise, Jeremy decided that the only way to help his friend was to carry him. So, they started the long climb back to their parents. Sometimes Jeremy carried Ian on his hack. Sometimes he carried him in his arms. Finally, after four hours, they arrived at the campsite where their parents were waiting. “I will always remember what Jeremy did for me,” said Ian. “He saved my life. That is the greatest thing that a person can do for his friend.”

2 . I am an ordinary 17-year-old girl. I go to school, chat to my friends and play my guitar. I don't have much in my mind. At least, that's what most people think. In fact, life changed drastically (巨大地) for me and my family in the summer of 2011, when I was 10. It was a beautiful summer's day when my dad had his accident. He had gone out for a bike ride and seemed to be taking a lot longer than usual. When Mum called him to check if everything was all right, a nurse answered the phone. I was inside the house and could hear her speaking to someone in the garden. As I looked out of the door.

I knew something terrible had happened. She looked stricken ( 受困 扰的) and I stood worriedly in the doorway until she hung up and told me Dad was in hospital. He had been involved in a road accident and had a severe injury. On that beautiful day, we didn’t have many details about what was going on because the nurse couldn’t disclose a lot through the phone and the unknown was the scariest thing. I had no idea whether my dad was going to live. My mum went alone to the hospital and I stayed at my grandparents’ house. I was too shaken to do anything, so I just sat quietly and hoped that everything would be OK. I don't have any siblings (兄弟姐妹), so Mum and I were the only ones in the house for the eight months when Dad was in hospital. It seemed empty and quiet especially as Mum was sometimes at work when I got back from school. Before Dad went into hospital there had always been someone there asking me about my day and helping me with homework. Now there wasn’t. I became more independent and tried to take care of myself as much as possible. When I think about my life, I split (分成) it into before and after the accident because I feel like a very different, more mature person than the one I was before. Most people’s childhood fades slowly into adolescence and then adult life, but mine ended abruptly (突然地). I was forced to grow up.

7 . It’s 6 p.m. on a Friday, and rather than heading home after a long workweek, Renee Dixon, a preschool director in Indianapolis, starts her second job as an Uber driver.

The money Dixon earns as a driver does not go into her own pocket. Instead, she uses it to buy holiday gifts and winter clothing for all 50 of her students. “So many families don’t have money to get Christmas presents this year. Some parents have lost their jobs, and others have had their wages cut back,” Dixon said. “A lot of them come from low-income families and are below the poverty line.”

The coronavirus pandemic, she said, has increased the need. “As far as presents go, a lot of these kids are likely to get nothing this year. I know how that feels,” said Dixon. “Being a driver in this special period, I have my own strict rules ,” she said. In her car, mask-wearing is required. Each passenger must sanitize (消毒) their hands upon entering the car, and she uses wipes to clean the back seat and door handles between each ride. Plus, she keeps the windows open a crack to circulate fresh air.

Alongside the money Dixon has earned through driving, several people in the community have donated money or offered to buy gifts for the students, including Eva Cheung. She said, “You read about people like Renee, but when you are finally able to connect with somebody like that and help fulfill their vision, it’s an amazing feeling.”
