2 . There was once a boy who liked nothing more in the world than to win. He loved winning at whatever it might be: football, cards, video games….And because he couldn't stand losing, he had become an expert in all kinds of tricks. He could play tricks in every situation without being noticed, even in video games or playing alone. He could win without ever being caught.
He won so many times that everyone saw him as the champion. It meant that almost no one wanted to play with him. One person who did play with him was a poor boy. He was a bit younger. The champion really enjoyed himself by making the boy look foolish.
But the champion ended up getting bored. He needed something more, so he decided to apply for the national video games championship, where he would find some competitors worthy of himself. At the championship he was eager to show his skills, but when he tried using all those tricks he knew from a thousand different games, none of them worked. The judges had prevented any of the tricks from working.
He felt embarrassed: he was a good player, but without his tricks, he couldn't beat a single competitor. Finally, the judges announced the name of the champion. It was the poor boy whom he had always beaten!
The boy realized that the poor boy had been cleverer than him. It hadn't mattered to the poor boy if he lost or got a good beating, because what he was really doing was learning from each of his defeats. And from so much learning he had become a real master.

6 . Charles Revson, founder of a successful cosmetic(化妆品) firm, once said, “In our factory we make lipstick. In our advertising, we sell hope.”
We could use a little more hope. I think that is why people buy lottery tickets(彩票). One poor mother, who was raising her children on a small salary earned from long hours of hard work, was asked, “Why do you waste your money on a lottery ticket when you can hardly make ends meet?”
“Yeah, I buy a ticket every day,” the woman admitted. “But a dollar is not too much to pay for 24 hours of hope.”
There are probably better uses for her money than buying lottery tickets. But she would rather hang onto a little hope that onto her dollar.
We need hope in life. Without it, far too many people come to the conclusion that they are powerless in the face of difficulties. “It can’t be helped.” is their motto. Without hope, they won’t make needed changes. They are powerless.
I’ve found that I can either be a prisoner of circumstances or a practioner hope. I can feel sorry for myself and helpless to do anything about my problems, or I can believe there is a realistic chance for something better.
Norman Cousins, in his book Head First: the Biology of Hope, explains the power of hope. He tells of two doctors who were to deliver a paper at a national meeting of caner specialists. One was truly puzzled. “I don’t understand it, Bob,” he said. “We use the same drugs of the same dosage(量), and the same schedule of treatment. Yet I get a 22 percent recovery rate and you get a 74 percent recovery rate. How do you explain that?”
The other responded, “We both use Etoposide(依托泊苷), Platinol(顺铂), Oncovin(长春新碱), and Hydroxyurea(羟基脲). You put those letters together and tell people that you are giving them E-P-O-H. I put them together and explain to them that they are receiving H-O-P-E.”

8 . Road trip stories are basically wild adventures of self-discovery. But the book Me (Moth) carves out a path through ancestry (祖先), pains and art.
Moth is a dancer with a loving, supportive family - until a terrible car accident takes them all away. Now she doesn't dance any more and lives with her sad aunt, wearing borrowed clothes and living on what feels like borrowed time, because not even the wisdom and Hoodoo (扶都教) passed down to her by her grandfather can bring back her family or ease her pain. Her survivor's guilt is so strong that she makes herself almost invisible.
Until the new boy at school, Sani, notices her. He sings when he thinks no one is listening and he sees Moth like no one else does. The two young people decide on a road trip across the country and hope to make some sense of their life on the way.
Novels in poetic language can sometimes feel awkward, but the book, Me (Moth) spills effortlessly across the page, becoming the song that Moth and Sani write together on their journey. It's all in Moth's voice, and her words dance, giving the reader a real sense of how she can move her body if she isn't afraid to. The language is sometimes so beautiful and terrible that it catches me off guard.
During their trip to the South, Moth and Sani stop to pay respect to the spirits of those who came before them, and to think about their strengths as well as the pains that they've suffered. As they do so, their own strengths and pains are connected with the ones that came before.
