1 . I was recently told by someone that I am a people-pleaser, a person who works hard on satisfying other people. However, this person wasn't saying it in a nice way. So what's wrong with that? What's wrong with making sure others are happy with me? Moreover, what exactly are the negative results of being a people-pleaser?

People-pleasers bum their fingers because of their "others-focused" mindset, which puts them at a disadvantage. When others are not happy, people-pleasers cannot think of anything else, nor can they enjoy the moment, because they are often disturbed with the fact that there is someone on the planet who is not satisfied with them at the moment.

People-pleasers often make promises they can't keep—they write checks they can't cash. This is the situation I found myself in recently. I made a promise to someone that I would do something for him. But it was a bit unrealistic and would take more efforts than I was willing to put in. As a result, that promise was empty. The act of making the promise made them happy, and that, in turn, made me feel satisfied.

Now that we've got an idea of the negative aspects of people-pleasers, what can we do to get rid of those aspects? Where can we start? The biggest challenge people-pleasers must overcome is to get used to saying "no". I find that it is a struggle, indeed. However, if I want to change my ways, then I must learn to overcome that discomfort

Are you a people-pleaser too? Don't worry. It doesn't make you a bad person, or a dishonest person. But it can sometimes leave you open to unneeded anxiety or be cheated by truly selfish people who only wish to take advantage of your kindness. Keep the good intentions and the good-heartedness in your heart. Just work on how you express your real feelings and hold on to your position through your actions.

Resilience is thought of as the ability to bear difficult and painful circumstances. It is what makes the difference between a person who gives up in     1     face of adversity and a person who somehow makes it through. Sometimes, we may not even realize how resilient we are until something     2     (unbelievable) disastrous happens in our lives.

Sometimes, when the worst happens, we blame everyone and everything around us—but ourselves—for     3     (we) misfortune. Other times, the worst happens, and we come out on the other side     4     (realize) that, “Hey, if I can get through that, I can get through anything.” In this way, we realize that we are, in fact,     5     (strong) than we knew. When disaster happens in our lives, we should allow ourselves     6     (feel) the emotional pain without letting it swallow us up.

When emotional pain and disaster spread through the soul fully, we run the risk     7     this pain becoming a long-term aspect of our identities, as a result of     8     we begin to see the pain as part of “who we are”. However, we are not the pain or the loss—we experience pain and loss. The beginning of the path towards building and increasing emotional resilience     9     (lie) in separating disaster and pain from who you are into something that you have witnessed, experienced, and ultimately learned valuable     10     (lesson) from.

Nick was a 10-year-old boy. He was the only son to his parents. Nick’s father was a very busy businessman who could not spend time with his son. He came home after Nick slept, and was off to the office before Nick woke up in the morning. Nick longed for his father’s attention. He wanted to go outdoors and play with his father just like his friends did.

One day, Nick was surprised to see his father at home in the evening.

“Dad, it is a big surprise to see you at home,” Nick said.

“Yes, son, my meeting was cancelled. So I’m at home. But after two hours I have to catch a flight,” his father replied.

“When will you be back?”

“Tomorrow noon.”

Nick was in deep thought for a while. Then he asked, “Dad, how much do you earn in a year?”

Nick’s father was taken aback (震惊). He said, “My dear son, it’s a very big amount and you won’t be able to understand it.”

“OK, Dad, are you happy with the amount you earn? ”

“Yes, my dear. I’m very happy, and in fact I’m planning to launch our new branch and a new business in a few months. Isn’t that great?”

“Yes, Dad. I’m happy to hear that. Can I ask you one more question?”

“Yes, dear.”

“Dad, can you tell me how much you earn in a day or even half a day?”

“Nick, why are you asking this question? ”Nick’s father was perplexed.

But Nick was persistent. “Please answer me. Could you please tell me how much you earn in an hour?”

Nick’s father gave in and replied, “It will be around $25 per hour.”

Nick ran to his room upstairs, and came down with his piggy bank that contained his savings.

“Dad, I have $50 in my piggy bank. Could you spare two hours for me? I want to go to the beach and have dinner with you tomorrow evening. Could you please mark this in your schedule?”

On paper alone you would never guess that I grew up poor and hungry. These years my     1    (recent)annual salary was over $ 700,000. I am a Truman National Security Fellow and a term member at the Council on Foreign Relations. My publisher has just released my latest book series on quantitative finance in worldwide distribution.

文章大意:本文是议论文。文章主要论述什么样的人是快乐的人。

7 . The Happy Man

The happy man lives objectively, and has free love and wide interests, through which he secures his happiness. To be the receivers of love is a vital cause of happiness, but the man who demands love is not the man to whom it is given.     1     But it is useless to attempt to give love as a calculation, for it is not sincere and is not felt.

What then can a man do who is unhappy because he is enclosed in self? If he is to get out of the vicious (恶性的) circle of unhappiness, it must be by true interests. But before that, he should analyze his trouble first.     2     If fear is his trouble, let him practice exercises designed to give courage.

Admit to himself every day at least one painful truth.     3     Exercises of this sort will enable him to admit facts and will free him from the fear to a large extent.

4     Do not say to yourself in advance, “I should be happy if I could become interested in stamp-collecting,” and thus set to work to collect stamps, for it may well happen that you will altogether fail to find stamp-collecting interesting. You may be pretty sure that true objective interests will grow up as soon as you have learnt not to be self-centered.

All unhappiness depends upon lack of integration (融合). There is disintegration within the self, consciously and unconsciously or between the self and society.     5     Such a man feels himself a citizen of the universe, enjoying what it affords, untroubled by the death because he feels not separate from those who will come after him.

A.There is much he can do about it.
B.The man who receives love is the man who gives it.
C.The interests will arise when you overcome being self-centered.
D.The happy life is to an extraordinary extent the same as the good life.
E.Teach himself life is worth even not having great virtue or intelligence.
F.Self-denying leaves a man self-absorbed and aware of his own sacrifice.
G.Neither divided against the self nor the world, the happy man never fails to unite.

8 . The world that we live in is beautiful because it’s made up of people from a diverse set of backgrounds and cultures.     1     There’s no better way than to acknowledge Global Diversity Awareness Month every October.

During this time, our multicultural world is embraced and celebrated for all of the variety and joy it brings. Can you imagine a world where everyone looks the same, has the exact same hobbies and interests, and even eats the same thing for breakfast, lunch and dinner?     2     And bringing those differences together makes us better.

To put it simply, our diversity and inclusiveness (包容性)are our biggest strengths. We’ll all profit from a more diverse, inclusive society, understanding, accommodating, even celebrating our differences, while pulling together for the common good. As such, Global Diversity Awareness Month is a great chance for us to learn more about the beliefs, values and customs of other cultures.         3

4     For example, we can host a multicultural movie night and watch foreign films, or listen to music from around the world or visit cultural art exhibitions. Another way we can celebrate diversity is by inviting our friends and family to dinner. Everyone can bring traditional dishes from their countries and hometowns.

There is no doubt that diversity and inclusiveness make our world a better place.     5     As Mahatma Gandhi once said, our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization. Hopefully, with each passing day, we get closer and closer to that achievement.

A.There are many ways we can celebrate diversity.
B.How can we make the world a better place to live in?
C.What can possibly be a better way to celebrate that diversity?
D.Respect for world diversity is the key to bridging the differences.
E.It’s our unique differences that make the world so wonderful and interesting.
F.What’s important is that we reach out to other people and appreciate those differences.
G.In this way, we can open our mind to new ideas and ways of thinking to better our society.
