In old times, there was a story about a young athletic boy hungry for success, for whom winning was everything.
One day, the boy was preparing himself for a running competition in his small native village. He and two other young boys were to compete. A large crowd had gathered to witness the competition and a wise old man, upon hearing of the little boy, had traveled far to see it too.
The race started. The boy showed his determination, strength and power and he was first. The crowd cheered and waved at the boy. The wise man remained still and calm. The little boy, however, felt proud and important.
A second race was called, and two new young challengers came forward to run with the little boy. The little boy finished first once again. The crowd again cheered and waved at the boy. The wise man expressed no opinion. The little boy, however, felt proud and important.
“Another race, another race!” shouted the little boy. The wise old man stepped forward and presented the little boy with two new challengers, a frail old lady and a blind man. “What is this?” asked the little boy. “Race!” said the wise man. The race was started and the boy was the only finisher. The little boy raised his arms in delight. The crowd, however, was silent showing no happiness. “What has happened? Why don’t they join in my success?” he asked the wise old man. “Race again, ” replied the wise man. “This time, all three of you, finish together,” continued the wise man.

4 . To be born in a duck’s nest, in a farmyard, is of no consequence to a bird, if it is hatched from a swan’s egg.
It was lovely summer weather in the country. Here sat a duck on her nest, watching for her young babies to hatch. After a hard time, one shell cracked, and then another, and from each egg came a living creature. But still one egg was not hatched yet. “I have no doubt it is a turkey’s egg as it is very big. Take my advice and leave it where it is,” said an old duck. But the mother duck insisted on sitting on it as a few days would be nothing after sitting so long already. Finally, the large egg broke, and a young one crept forth. It was very large and ugly.
Because of his look, this poor duckling, who had crept out of his shell last of all, was often bitten, pushed and made fun of, not only by the ducks, but by all the poultry. Even his mother, who once spoke highly of his good characters and excellent swimming skills, said she wished he had never been born, so the duckling left his families. And soon he found water on which it could swim and dive, but was avoided by all other animals, because of his ugly appearance.
Autumn came. One evening, there came a large flock of beautiful birds. The duckling had never seen any like them before. But he felt towards them and determined to fly to those royal birds. He spoke to himself it would be better killed by them than pecked by ducks or starved with hunger in the winter. Then he flew towards the beautiful swans. But what he saw in the clear stream below is his own image; no longer a dark, gray bird, ugly and disagreeable to look at, but a graceful and beautiful swan. He was so happy but not at all proud. Unfairly treated for his ugliness, now he heard others said he was the most beautiful of all the birds.

5 . The ocean is full of lessons.
If you are able to spend time at a beach in summer and go for a swim, you'll find yourself facing a number of choices when waves arrive. Challenges are often described as coming in "waves".
Get knocked over—and come up laughing. I've taught my 9-year-old son the same beach safety rule my mother taught me: If you get knocked over by a wave, find the sandy bottom with your feet so you can push off and break through the water's surface. Thus you can experience the joy of getting knocked down and finding your way back up again.
Ride the waves. When swimming in deep water, face what's coming and reflect on what's behind. When you turn landward and ride the waves toward the shore, that same sort of waves that may have knocked you down, or that you steeled yourself against, can now carry you forward.

6 . Learning doesn’t have to stop at the schoolhouse door. In fact, it shouldn’t.
Years ago, we started collecting everyday items from the past. We love things people like us were interacting with on a daily basis back in the Victorian (维多利亚时期的)era. Most textbook history focuses on extreme cases: politics, war, and Great Names. We’ve never been privileged to keep company with kings and presidents in the modern world, so we’ve always been drawn far more strongly to people we ourselves can relate to. We love simple stories of approachable people.

Jack graduated from a famous university this July. He went to apply for a job in a big company and had to go through interviews before getting the job.
He passed the first two interviews easily, and then it was the boss’s turn to do the last one and make the final decision whether Jack would get the job or not.
The boss learned that Jack’s academic achievements were very good all the way, from the middle school until university. Never had a year when he did not receive prizes.
The boss asked, “Did you have any part-time jobs in school?” Jack shook his head and said, “No, I didn’t have part-time jobs.” The boss went on and asked, “Was it your father who paid for your school fees?” Jack replied, “My father passed away when I was one year old. It was my mother who worked and paid for my school fees.”
The boss continued, “Where did your mother work?” Jack told him that his mother worked as a clothes cleaner. Every day she would carry baskets of clothes home. After washing and ironing the clothes, she carried the baskets back to the store where she got paid.
Then the boss politely requested Jack to show his hands to him. Jack was confused and he showed his hands in front of the boss, a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect. The boss asked again, “Jack, have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?” Jack answered, “Never. My mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Besides, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.”
The boss smiled and said, “Jack, I am satisfied with your performance in the interviews, but I have another request. When you return home tonight, go and clean your mother’s hands, and then come to see me tomorrow morning.”

10 . It’s no secret that college is expensive. I received financial aid, and I was able to cover the cost of enrollment, books, supplies, course materials, and additional school-related fees. But I could not afford housing, transportation, food, healthcare, or other basic necessities. The longer each semester went on, the harder the choices became.
When spring semester ended that first year at college, I had good grades, but I did not have two quarters to my name. I decided that if I could afford to be a full-time student, I would need to work a full-time job. Soon, I started working at the airport as a cleaner of aircraft cabins. My first shift at the airport was a graveyard shift, where I detailed aircraft of varying sizes. During this total night shift, I have to do “deep cleaning”, which meant cleaning everything and even I had to check every safety compartment and replace any missing items. This could be disgusting work.
Another fact upset me a lot that working at the airport and going to school did not fit easily together. Some days 1 was too exhausted after a night shift to get to class. Other days I didn’t have time to complete school assignments owing to a busy workday. At the end of the fall semester, I received a final warning for my attendance at my job. Once again, I was between a rock and a hard place and had to make a decision. I wanted to go to school and excel, but I also had grown accustomed to financially supporting myself.
Ultimately, I chose to temporarily stop going to school and to continue working, a decision. I would later regret. The airline closed for various reasons. I felt stupid. I had put a lot into this job, even sacrificing my education, and now I would have neither job nor education. I’d finally learned what my grandmother meant when she once said that your job is temporary, and your education is forever.
