1 . When I was 12 years old, I already knew that my teen years were going to be the worst years of my life. I was a total outsider, bullied (欺凌) at school. I felt completely alone in my small town.

But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone.

Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me.

After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the optimistic, positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream career, one I thought was only possible for the authors I loved, is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day.

Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change someone’s life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an architect of positive change.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A few years ago, the company I worked for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year. I’ve always loved running, so I was really happy when I found out I lived next to Central Park. This meant that every morning I could go for a run before I went to work.

Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers in the park, so usually I didn’t take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything? But one morning, my wife gave me a S 10 bill and asked me to buy some bread on the way.

It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging (慢跑) around. While I was running through the park, another jogger knocked into me. He apologized and continued running. For a while, I didn’t think too much of it. However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought was kind of strange. The warning of robbers in the park occurred to me. ”It could have been a robber!” I suddenly became alarmed, so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing. Without thinking twice, I ran after that jogger. I finally caught up and held him by the arm. I shouted, “Give me the $10 bill! Now!” I am not usually a hot-headed (性急的) person, but I got really angry this time. I couldn’t believe the robbery was actually happening to me. Filled with anger, I shook my fist at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.

I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I couldn’t wait to tell my wife my story. “You won’t believe what happened to me,” I started with pride. She immediately stopped me, “I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”

It was New Year’s Eve. I was 15 and feeling sad because there was not enough money to buy the dress I wanted. We did the housework early that night, so I thought Dad wanted extra time for us to spend together. Instead, he dressed himself again and went outside. “Come on, Elizabeth,” he said. “Dress yourself warmly. It’s cold out.”

Outside, I became even more annoyed. Not only wasn’t I getting the dress; now Dad was pulling me out in the cold. Whatever we were going to do wasn’t going to be a quick job. I unwillingly climbed up beside Dad, the cold already biting me. We pulled in front of the woodshed(柴棚),and started loading (装载)wood. Finally, I asked, “Dad, what are you doing?” “Have you been by Mrs. Clark’s lately?” he asked.

Mrs. Clark lived about two miles down the road from us. Her husband had passed away the year before, leaving her and three children to raise on her own. “Yeah,” I said. “Why?” “I rode by just today,” Dad said. “Little Jake was out digging around in the woodpile, trying to find a few pieces of wood. They’re out of wood, Elizabeth.”

That was all he said. Dad then went to the smokehouse and took down a side of bacon, telling me to go load it. He returned carrying a large bag of flour(面粉) over his right shoulder and a smaller bag of something in his left hand. “What’s in the little bag?” I asked. “Shoes . They’re out of shoes. I got the children a box of candies, too. It just wouldn’t be New Year without some candy. ”I tried to think through what Dad was doing. We did have a big woodpile, meat and flour, so we could give some, but I knew we didn’t have any money. Mrs. Clark had closer neighbors than us. Why should we care?

We unloaded the wood behind the Clarks’ house and knocked on the door. It opened a crack(缝隙), and a fearful voice said, “Who is it?” “James Cotton, ma’am, and my daughter, Elizabeth. Could we come in for a bit?”

7 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入一个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

In the distant past, friends relied on each other for their survival(生存). They hunted together and protected each other from       1     (danger) animals and enemies. In those days, if you didn’t have a friend, you would either starve,     2    (eat)or killed. Nowadays, friendship isn’t     3    (exact) a matter of life and death. However, friendship is still of great importance and not having a friend is something to be     4     (concern) about. Most people look upon friends as someone they can depend on when they are going    5    times of trouble. In such times, friends provide them with emotional support and sometimes financial help. It is in these troubled times     6     they find out who their true friends are. As an old saying     7    (go), in times of prosperity, friends will be plenty; in times of     8    (suffer), not one in twenty. And there is another saying that says you can hardly make a friend in a year, but you can easily upset one in an hour. So do your best    9     ( get) along with and be grateful to the people     10     are willing to side with you even when you are in the wrong as they are true friends and they are not easily come by.

Two weeks ago, our class had the exciting basketball match with Class One. I had thought of that our team had strong and able players, including me, so the opposite team was no much for us. And when the match started, I was surprising to find that every member of the other team was fighting hard, even though they were not better than us. Final, it was no surprise that we become the winner in the match. But Class One won our respect for our fight in the match. 10 . Why do most of us live our life always caring what people might say or think? Some of the decisions we make are just to please the outside world around us. I have always lived life pleasing the ever over-demanding society. This had a great effect on my search for authenticity (真实性). I only felt good enough when people paid attention to me. So I would frequently do things to catch people’s eye instead of placing emphasis on what really matters to me.

A recent experience changed my view. I had been looking for a tailor to mend some of my clothes. With the help of a few friends, I found one, who just so happened to go to the same gym as me. As we chatted, he shared his story and his use of drugs for muscle development with me. In his words, he weighed over 240 pounds and was the envy of a lot of people. So many people wanted to be like him and have a body like his, which made him use more drugs.

But within two years something happened. He began to have problems with his liver. The doctor advised him to stop using drugs and give up lifting heavy weights for a while. This was a hard decision because he had got so used to the attention from people. He didn’t want to give that up; who would? Right? That was it. He made me understand how he lived his life for people. He lost sight of what was best for him.

He told me not to live life thinking about too much what people think, feel, or say. Instead, live life with meaning. His story really has an effect on me. I have to look at my life to see what I do. I am not saying we shouldn’t take the advice of others into consideration, but we must work hard for continuous self-awareness (自我认识). If we can know what we’re doing and why we’re doing it, we can realize just how important that thing is to us.

1. What does the underlined phrase“placing emphasis on”mean?
A.Looking forward to.B.Paying attention to.
C.Getting familiar with.D.Taking pride in.
2. Why did the tailor use drugs?
A.To lose weight.B.To keep healthy.
C.To treat his liver disease.D.To improve his muscle and weight.
3. Why was the tailor unwilling to accept the doctor’s suggestion?
A.He was afraid of losing others’admiration.
B.He didn’t have any trouble with his health.
C.He wanted to live a simple and easy life.
D.He wasn’t able to lose sight of himself.
4. What lesson does the story tell us?
A.We should live life to the fullest.
B.Being open to others’advice is important.
C.We should have a good understanding of ourselves.
D.Nothing is more important than good health in our life.
