3 . Bara Finch began to write to Elizabeth Martin 70 years ago. And they have been pen friends ever since then.
“70 years is a long time and such a lot has happened,” says Barbara. “I have lost my husband and my son, and she has lost her husband and her daughter. With things like that, her friendship means a lot to me.”
The two started writing letters to each other in November 70 years ago. At that time, Barbara was a 14-year-old pupil. In her school, there were some students from New Zealand. Among many pen friends, Barbara and Elizabeth were the only pair to form a long friendship.
Technology has made a big difference to how the pair communicates now. Instead of writing, they continue to send e-mails to tell each other about their daily lives every week. “We e-mail to each other instead if writing letters now mainly because it’s quicker and there is no cost,” says Barbara.
Barbara and Elizabeth not only write to each other, but they also meet face to face. Barbara goes from England to visit Elizabeth when she has time. They have visited each other 15 times. “Her family has become a second family to me. She says I’m the sister she never bad,” Barbara says.

6 . I think that a great friend is a great artist who can change my feeling about life greatly. When I talk about the person who influenced me most, I must think of my best friend quickly.
When I was in my university, one of my classmates sat beside me. His name is Wang Tao. He is my unforgettable friend in my life. He is good at study and handsome. Everyone knows that he is a genius(天才) of my university.
He is kind-hearted and is always ready to help others. But he doesn’t like others to praise him, because he think what he did is common. There is an old saying: A friend in need is a friend indeed. Wang Tao sets a good example in many parts in my life.
I remembered that my mathematics was mediocre at that time, but he was excellent in solving mathematics questions. He often received high scores. Of course, I wished I could reach at his level. Since we talked all day long, he was patient and polite to answer my mathematics questions. Slowly, I made great progress in mathematics. I passed the examination finally. Then we became friends naturally. And now, I still remember his strong will to study.
We know that we live in a society, so we need a lot of friends. There are two kinds of friends, good and bad, bad friend may make our life failed, while good ones make our life successful. To me, Wang Tao is a very good friend. I learned so many advantages from him, and I changed more and more excellently.
We separated three months ago. Now I miss him very much, and I hoped that our friendship will continue to be just as strong after we graduate.

8 . We are all born social and company to live happy and fruitful life. Healthy and supportive mutual relationships help reduce stress and promote the, physical, mental and emotional well-being by building skills like time management, assertiveness( 坚定自信), sociability and empathy.
Making friends has made me feel secure. However, I have to be cautious to pick up friends sharing similar tastes and values. In addition, having added to one’s circle of friends helps one feel supported.
It is true that finding time to cultivate relationships is all about effective time management. My busy uncle finds time to catch up with family and friends during his tea and lunch breaks. Similarly my friend Somya uses her time on her way back home from work in her chauffeur-driven car to catch up with people. The modern inventions of SMS and e-mail help send wishes for birthdays and anniversaries to show your love and care.
Assertiveness is as much applicable to relationships. My friend Mohana emphasizes that neither being a passive observer nor being aggressive helps relationships. It is assertiveness in our relationships that opens the lines of effective communication. It emphasizes helping friends in need and also strengthens mutually supportive relationships.
It is also true that assertiveness by intuition promotes discretion(自行决定权) of friends and helps Lalitha distinguish positive people from drains of energy. She can easily figure this out by the flow of the conversation, the way each feels understood, accepted and supported, and by how I feel, happy, bored or energized in the relationship. It also helps to know whether all benefit from each other’s positive aspects.
Handling stress in life is all about cultivating mutually supportive relationships and working on them. Manisha always says she feels great when sharing her feelings after a hard day with people who share similar ideas. Actually we all need someone who would not just hear us, but listen to us, and we need to cultivate the art of listening and understanding people.
1. A busy person can develop his social relationships by________.A.inviting friends for dinner | B.making friends with strangers |
C.working hard for high positions | D.getting together in the intervals of business |
A.Being passive. | B.Being assertive. |
C.Being aggressive. | D.Being relaxed. |
A.lonely | B.bored | C.stressed | D.energetic |
A.Manisha. | B.Mohana. | C.Lalitha. | D.Somya. |
A.How should we handle our stress in life? |
B.What is to be done for applicable relationships? |
C.How can we pick up friends supporting us? |
D.How people build mutually supportive social relationship? |
My heart beat wildly as I stared at my phone screen. I re-read the message from my friend, Jane. Someone had upset her by sharing her personal news: she had been refused by her dream school. Jane had shared the sad news with only a few people. She didn’t know who let the word out, but she was really hurt and disappointed.
I felt so bad. I knew how the news had gotten out because I had been the one to tell someone beyond her closest friends. Honestly, I hadn’t realized she meant to keep it so close to only a few in the first place, but at the same time I’d known it wasn’t a good idea when I started to tell it to someone else.
Did she really not know it was me? It would have been easy to admit what I had done and apologize if her message put the blame, specifically, on me. But it read as though it had been copied and sent to several people. Once again ignoring the right choice, I chose the coward’s (懦夫) way out instead.
“I’m so sorry for what happened to you,” I typed. “How awful that your confidence was broken!”
I hoped that would work. Her reply came back within seconds: “Thank you.”
“It would be okay for me to remain anonymous (匿名), wouldn’t it?” I thought to myself.
But, deep down, I knew I’d been the one to break faith and hurt her. I was ashamed, not only of my original action, but also because I’d taken a further step in the wrong direction by covering it up.
I felt painful at church on Sunday, sitting in silence all the time. Later, the speaker asked us to examine ourselves and see if anything stood in the way of holding on to our faith, and if so, not to let anything stop us until we cleared it away. Chancing it all — whatever we feared, whatever held us back — would be worth it to make it right.

How is everything going? I am written to express my heartfelt thanks to you because of I've won the first prize in the English Speech Contest of our school. Your kind help has meant more than something.
I remember vividly what you guided and encouraged me. During the preparation of the contest, you help polish my draft many times but better my pronunciation with great patience.
The public speaking skills you shared turned up really effective. More importantly, whenever I felt hesitant and unsure about yourself, you were always there to back me up and boost my confidence. Without you, I could not have made so an achievement.
Thank you for everything you have done for me and wish you all best.
