One day my friend Lily and I were talking about some parties that we had attended. Then suddenly I remembered that our best friend Emma’s birthday was next Saturday and we had not planned anything for her birthday!
At once we started discussing what we could do for Emma’s birthday. It suddenly came to my mind that we could throw a surprise party for her. I suggested that we could do it at my house as my parents and my brother were going to a farm and I was going to stay home. We also realized that nobody’s parents would allow their children to throw a party at their own houses as they would get dirty.
After that, we started deciding what things we could do at the party and what we could give her as a present. Finally, we agreed to give her a bunny (兔子) house as Emma has a baby bunny but she did not have a house for it.
The next day after my parents and my brother left, I invited Lily to my house. While Lily was coming, she ran into Emma, which made Lily nervous.
She thought that Emma would get suspicious (怀疑的) but thankfully Emma did not suspect a thing. Until the time Lily arrived, I gathered all the decorative (装饰的) items (物品) I had. I saw the cake which Lily had baked and it looked amazing.
I started decorating, while Lily began sending the invitations to our friends, and then she also joined me to decorate the room. When we finished decorating, we got very tired. So we decided to do the rest of the things the next day.
Finally, the day came. Everybody started coming and they were very excited about the party. Then I called up Emma and told her that a cat was stuck in (被困在) a tree in my back yard so that she would definitely (一定) come to my house to help me rescue (拯救) it. Later, we all hid (藏) in different places at my house.

Friendship on the rocks

5 . “REMOVE from friends.”
This is no ordinary button. One click, and I have the power to erase a person from my life.
In late fall, I had around 400 friends on Facebook. Today, I have 134. Click. Make that 133.
When Facebook first entered my life in 2005, I panicked that my friend count was too low. If I wasn’t properly connected, how would anyone see my clever quote? Who would wish me a happy birthday? I accepted and sent out friend requests without a second thought and soon accumulated 391 friends.
There is an appeal to being able to communicate 24/7 with someone or just “thumbs (拇指) up” a photo rather than make real conversation.
“It’s comforting and it’s easy,” said Larry Rosen, a professor at California State University, who studies the way people communicate online. “There’s a sense of belonging in it. It’s a sense of community in a generation where community has sort of disappeared.”
However, I don’t talk to half of these people in the online community. Click. 132. Sound easy? You try it.
Look at who you’re dealing with: family, friends, classmates… With every click of the “Remove from friends” button, you risk burning a bridge, losing a contact and missing an opportunity. So every time I go to click the button, my heart hurts.
The New Oxford American Dictionary announces its “Word of the Year” each year, and last year, “unfriend” made the cut (入围) (though I’ll still stick with “defriend”).
When I started my mission (任务), a few friends joined.
“Oh my God, I defriended like 600 people today. I feel so good!” my friend Sarah messaged.
Dana, a close friend from high school, and I battled it out to see who could get our counts lower. She wins at 123.
To some, it’s poor “netiquette (网络礼仪)” to defriend. But to me, it’s the stage of life when we hold onto the people who count, the people who impact you.

A.Impoliteness. | B.A sense of belonging. |
C.A battle with her friend. | D.Keeping those who matter more. |
A.No ordinary button | B.Losing friends can be fun |
C.A Friend in need is a friend indeed | D.Facebook, a special online community |
6 . If you’re new in a school or you are shy, making new friends might seem like a challenge. Luckily, you can overcome (克服) that challenge by following the tips below.
Introduce yourself to new people whenever possible.
Give other people some space.
Overcome your fear of rejection. One of the biggest difficulties to reach out and make new friends is the fear that we will not be accepted. Try not to take it personally if someone does not accept your invitation. Understand that the rejection may have more to do with who the other person is than it has to do with you.
A.If you really want to find new friends |
B.Spend time around people who show kindness |
C.When you’re around someone you don’t know |
D.Look for people who have the same hobbies as you |
E.Keep in mind that other people have their own lives to focus on |

Grace and Ellen, both promising in their school’s dance competition, were fierce competitors. They both had great passion for dancing and dreamt for bigger stages. They were both friends and competitors. They had similar taste in music, and had similar dressing styles. Even they wore shoes of the same size. They had both committed themselves to preparing for the upcoming contest.
Grace’s journey to the competition was marked by countless hours of practice and determination. She would rise before the sun, and the studio lights were her only company. Every movement was perfected with unwavering commitment. She knew that this competition wasn’t just about personal success; it was also about upholding her school’s honor. “Grace, you’re incredible!” Grace’s dance instructor, Mrs. Anderson, often praised her. “Your hard work will pay off.”
Ellen had been practicing hard for this competition, as well. Her love for dance was her driving force. After school, she would head straight to the dance studio, tirelessly perfecting every step and twirl. Her dance shoes had become an extension of her feet, and her heart burned with a strong desire for victory. “Ellen, you’re a natural,” her fellow dancers would often say. “You’ve got this!”
The day of the competition finally arrived, and there were five competitors fighting for the championship title. Ellen was scheduled to perform before Grace.
As Ellen stood backstage, the butterflies in her stomach seemed to have turned into a whirlwind (漩涡). She checked her dance shoes one last time and realized a huge mistake. The shoes themselves were a size too small — It turned out she took her little sister’s shoes by mistake. Panic set in as her mind raced for g solution.
“Ellen, you’re up next!” the stage manager announced.
In the dimly lit (灰暗的) backstage area, Grace overheard Ellen’s whispers to her friend, Sarah.
“I brought the wrong shoes, Sarah,” Ellen’s voice trembled (颤抖). “They are too small. What am I going to do?”
Grace’s heart sank as she overheard the conversation.
