My uncle     1    (retire) ten years ago from a factory where he worked as an engineer for thirty-five years. After his fifty-fifth birthday, he applied to work as an advisor like most     2    (experience) plant employees and spent the last part of his career there. Soon    3    he retired, he moved to the retirement community. The staff there focuses mainly    4    improving the strength and energy of each person living in the community as well as     5    (meet) their needs and interests. He takes part in many     6    (activity): oil painting, watercolor, and other crafts,     7    his major interest is golf. Weather    8    (permit), he plays every day. They have    9    golf course in the community, and since he plays more often    10     he used to before he retired, his golf has improved a lot.

The Inferno is the oldest and most celebrated of all amateur ski races. It     1     (hold) every January, near MÜrren in Switzerland. Anyone can take part, as long as they belong to     2     ski racing club.

The Inferno was the     3     (invent) of a British businessman called Henry Lunn, who came up with the idea of the package holiday in the early 1900s and     4     (begin) taking groups of people to the Alps for winter sports. Henry’s son, Arnold, grew very fond of MÜrren and he founded a ski club there in 1924. Four years later, seventeen of the club’s members took part in the first Inferno race,     5     the top of the 2,970-metre Schilthorn mountain to MÜrren below.

In those early days, they used     6    (climb) for six hours from the railway station in MÜrren before the start of the race. Today,     7     (racer) use a cable car (缆车) which takes about twenty minutes. In the first race, the winning time for the fourteen-kilometre race was one hour, twelve minutes. These days it tends to be almost     8     (exact) an hour. Although the skiers are very much faster now, some things haven’t changed. 4 . In today’s world we are constantly surrounded by technology. It’s true to say that technology                     1    (make) our lives easier. However, increasing scientists are saying that we need to give ourselves a break---otherwise we put ourselves at risk of    2    (develop) hundreds of health problems. Over the summer the days are longer, sunnier and free from school. With all this free time, why not put it to good use    3    do something    4    doesn’t involve technology?

If you just fancy relaxing, why not head to a beach? Take along your favorite book and relax on     7    sands, or go for a stroll along the coastline. If you don’t live near a beach, you could go to your local park.

Next time you find yourself     10    (aim) changing channels, have a think about what else you can do to spend your time.
