You probably don’t remember much of what you did when you were four. You were probably in preschool. You probably weren’t aware of greater world problems such as greenhouse gases, poverty etc. And I’m sure you definitely weren’t thinking of ways to solve these pressing world issues, because it’s just not what    1     four-year-olds do, right?

Well, this isn’t the case for Joshua Williams. When he was only four years old and he was walking on the street with his mother, he saw a homeless man. The man had a sign that said “need food”. That moment was eye-opening for him and so he was       2     to do something about it.

Joshua and his family started helping out some poor families by giving them food. He founded the “Joshua’s Heart Foundation” in 2005 with the help of his family and a couple of close friends.

Joshua’s Heart Foundation has two main goals: to “stomp out world hunger” and “break the cycle of poverty”. They do this through many different programs such as the Food Recovery and Distribution Program which provides boxes of food to hundreds of families on a low       3     every month.

Joshua’s Heart Foundation also educates communities and raises awareness of hunger and hunger-related issues. People who are aware that hunger is a serious issue are more likely to     4     to stomping it out.

Joshua’s incredible work has been     5     and led to him receiving many high-profile awards. In 2012, he became the youngest recipient (接受者) ever of the White House Champions of Change Award.

The National Trust in Britain plays an increasingly important part in the protection of the British countryside. It is a     1    association of people who care for the unspoiled countryside and historic buildings of Britain. It is a     2    which depends on voluntary support from the public. Its     3    duty is to protect places of great natural beauty and places of historical interest.

Countless animal welfare groups, rescues and funds exist today which help animals on the     1    level—to get them out of harm’s way, fund their care and rehabilitation, and get them into caring homes or back into natural environments. On a more expansive level however, animal education foundations and charities are the     2    of promoting animal equality and compassion for all creatures, and helping us all to become more aware of our environment, and the animals that we share it with.

Animal education foundations as a whole are organizations that support animal health research, provide education to the public on animal welfare     3    , and foster the ideas of compassion and coexistence. They encourage public     4    in these humane interests, and in furthering public awareness in general. Some Foundations get involved in large-scale rescue or other local-level activity, but what these types of organizations do best is to     5    awareness, collect money through corporate, philanthropic and public donations, and fund groups that are actually out there working with the animals by rescuing, providing care and remedying their mismanagement, or by funding scientific studies that benefit animal welfare. Animal cruelty is a(n)     6    battle, with legitimate rescue groups and shelters rarely having enough money for their needs; many times it is an animal education foundation that will     7    in with a grant to help them in their missions.

Through the use of     8    material, media coverage and their support of other humane groups, animal education foundations exist to teach compassionate, humane care of all animals and to learn more about these creatures that share our world so that we can     9    them to live better lives. With a message that it is better to educate people how to prevent cruelty, than to deal with the     10    , these charitable foundations spread their messages far and wide, offering much food for thought, and providing a caring example of how all creatures and the environment should be treated so that people and animals can live together in harmony.

How to Check Out a Charity Before You Donate

You hear the words “childhood disease” or “natural disaster,” and it can be hard to say no to donation requests to help. But your instinct to be generous always should be     1     by a healthy dose of doubt. The recent crackdown launched by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on four cancer charities a good reminder to make sure your donations are put to good use. So how can you make sure that the money you give doesn’t end up lining the pockets of the     2     ? Follow these tips.

Hang up on telemarketers. The cancer charities charged with fraud by the FTC used telemarketing calls to raise donations. If you get a call from a group asking for money, you might feel     3     to make a donation on the spot. But the FTC cautions that you shouldn’t rush to say yes but     4     any requests to give over the phone. Telemarketing companies often keep a significant portion of the funds they raise. You’re better off     5     the middleman and contacting a charity directly to make a donation.

Don’t wait for charities to come to you. To avoid feeling the pressure to give to an organization that reaches out to you, figure out what     6     is important to you. Then find charities that are     7     it. You can browse charities that have been evaluated by Charity Navigator by category to identify groups you want to support. Having a(n)     8     plan will make it easier to avoid making impulse donations.

Research before you give. The FTC     9     against the four cancer charities shows that just because an organization claims to do good doesn’t mean it actually does. That’s why it’s important to find out as much as you can about how an organization will use your donation before you give. You can start with third-party evaluations and ratings at sites such as Charity Navigator and Charity Watch, which examine charities’     10    , governance and effectiveness.

“Classroom on wheels” teaches woodworking skills to young people

Handing power tools over to young students could result in some    1    situations. But if those tools are combined with effective supervision and teaching, the students can learn valuable new skills and might even find a new career path.

One such programme, in Washington, DC, aims to teach woodworking and finished carpentry skills to teens and young adults. It includes a woodshop, completely    2    inside a truck, that acts as a kind of “classroom on wheels”.

The Mobile Woodshop programme was    3    by the non-profit Zenith Community Arts Foundation. It is currently based at Ballou STAY Opportunity Academy in Washington, DC. Ballou STAY is an    4    education programme that offers students job training and has a high school graduation programme for adults over age 23.

Margery Goldberg, Zenith’s director, said the goal of the woodshop is “to get people jobs”. Goldberg is an artist, wood sculptor and long-time member of the DC art community. She had long dreamed of creating a mobile woodshop to assist students. That dream finally came true in 2020, when the city gave her a large    5    for the programme.

Students at Ballou can learn the same skills as a beginning carpenter would. These include cutting, marking, measuring,     6    and how to use different tools. The class textbook provides step-by-step instructions on how to make things like simple wooden bird houses, to more    7    wooden containers and objects. The truck is equipped with all the instructional materials and tools necessary to operate as a complete mobile classroom. Mobile workstations are also    8    so students can work on projects outside the truck.

Joe Largess is a teacher at the woodshop. He said much of the class centres on teaching students “soft skills”. These are skills that are    9    in all jobs, such as teamwork, having a strong work ethic, being able to follow instructions and arriving at work on time. Students also learn basic skills like maths and how to read a ruler.

Goldberg believes woodshop programmes can help prepare the next generation of woodworkers. She said other schools in Washington have expressed interest in the mobile woodshop and the programme might be    10    in the coming years.

Su Xiao, 49, and Xu Guangchun, 42, are like-minded souls on the streets of Beijing, checking surveillance cameras and     1     passersby, with a near-constant barrage of calls on their phones.

They are on the lookout for senior citizens with Alzheimer's disease, a hard-hitting disease that can easily     2     a patient's memory and other major mental functions.

Seven years ago, Su and Xu co-founded the Beijing Voluntary Emergency Rescue Service Center, which     3     a public welfare campaign to help families find their lost elders in 2016.

Su, an outdoor sports lover, is a seasoned mountain rescue     4    . On New Year's Day of 2016, he was on his way to a nearby ski resort where he ran into a listless and pale elderly woman who was holding a sack and     5     in the cold under a bridge.

She was mumbling, saying that she was about to buy noodles for her son, and this    6     Su of his grandmother, an Alzheimer's patient.

Su reported the situation to the police and they found a scrap of paper with a     7     number in her pocket. It turned out that days had passed since she lost contact with her her family and she had traveled more than 40 kilometers from her home in southwestern Beijing to an unfamiliar neighborhood in the east of the city.

According to statistics     8     by a white paper released in 2016 by the Zhongmin Social Assistance Institute, about 500,000 senior citizens get lost each year, with about 80 percent over the age of 65. Alzheimer's disease is one of the top reasons for them going missing.

Su and his rescue team watch surveillance videos first to sort out clues before further rescue efforts, and rely on the elderly person's experiences in their childhood and youth as clues when looking for them.

He once managed to find an 80-year-old along a river in a suburb of Beijing,     9     on the elderly person's childhood life experience of living on a riverboat.

The youngest person they have found was in their late 40s, Su said, adding that patients aged under 60 are difficult for family members and other people to spot, not to mention those who dismiss the illness as ominous and are     10     to confide in their neighbors, relatives or friends.

Su and Xu's "lost and found" service has sent more than 320 elderly back home safe and sound. More than 500 volunteers, including some family members of people they have found, have joined the rescue team.

"The farther we walk, the closer the lost elders get to their homes," Su said.

Amazing Kids of the Month — Hannah and Alexander Laman

Hannah and Alexander Laman, 11-year-old twins from Ohio, love reading. They both love reading so much that it is almost impossible to     1     a favourite book. “I have many favourite books. If I had to select one, it would be Believe It or Not,” Hannah said.

Providing Houses with Heart

Homelessness is not usually a simple matter of “rooflessness.” Some causes of homelessness are personal, such as     1     with physical or mental health, addiction and domestic violence. Other causes are systemic an over-priced housing market, job loss in a weak economy and poor government policies. Since both kinds of causes keep the problem occur, we must     2     both to solve the problem. Thankfully, innovative organizations are rising to meet the challenge.

3D-printed houses

Brett Hagler personally witnessed the homelessness caused by Haiti’s 2010 earthquake. That thoughtful experience prompted him to     3     New Story, an organization that helps destroyed communities recover by building houses faster, better and, hopefully, cheaper.

New Story is,     4     working on building the world's first 3D-printed neighborhood in Tabasco Mexico. It takes about 24 hours to “print” the walls of a house, after which local workers     5     the roof, doors and plumbing. The houses are designed to withstand earthquakes and hurricanes and will     6     last for generations. After developing and demonstrating their methods in Tabasco, New Story intends to offer the use of their technology to governments and other housing nonprofits.

A bridge that can't be burned

Abilene, Texas, is seeing success through an innovative     7     to homelessness called Built for Zero. Built for Zero team members believe that with homelessness, the problem isn't the people; it's the systems. So while they're developing personal relationships with homeless “neighbors,” they're simultaneously helping with problems like inefficient housing assistance policies and     8

They practice “radical hospitality,” which means learning every person's name and treating them like they're important. They take people out for coffee, fix cars and charge batteries in the homeless camps. They help neighbors     9     the assessment process for housing assistance when they're ready, even when it's     10    . “Radical hospitality promotes the dignity and worth of those we serve,” they explain, “and it produces the best results.” They want to be a “bridge that can't be burned.”
