1 . Matt Haig, the best-selling author of the novel “The Midnight”, recommends some books that offer wisdom or comfort in difficult times.
Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Rilke (1929). This is the ultimate comfort read. The book is what the title suggests: letters from an older poet to a younger one. The great thing about Rilke’s advice is that it acknowledges the darkness and suffering of existence, yet manages despite that—or maybe even because of that—to inspire.
When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chödrön(1996). I read this book during the first lockdown, and it was the perfect read for uncertain times. Chödrön is a Buddhist, but the advice and philosophy in these relatively few pages speaks universally. It’s a great book about embracing life in its totality, about seeing hope and suffering as part of a whole.
The House at Pooh Corner by A.A. Milne(1928). The Winnie-the-Pooh stories really speak to people going through tough times. In many ways, each of the characters reflects a different mental state: Eeyore is depressed, Tigger is hyper-active, Piglet is anxious, and Pooh reflects a hope and optimism much needed in recovery. I reread this book when I was ill with a panic disorder, and it soothed me.
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott (1994). In my opinion, this is the greatest book about writing ever written. But like Rilke, Lamott is offering far more than writing advice. She is offering wisdom on life and how to embrace its imperfect nature.

2 . SQRRR or SQ3R introduced by Francis P. Robinson is a reading comprehension method named for its five steps: survey, question, read, recite, and review.
Survey
The first step, survey or skim, advises that one should go through a chapter and note headings, sub-headings and other outstanding features.
Question
Read (R)
Use the background work done with “S” and “Q” in order to begin reading actively.
Recite (R)
The second “R” refers to the part known as “Recite”. The reader should try to retrieve (取回) from memory what was learned in the same manner as telling someone else about the information. It is important that the reader use his/her own words in order to formulate and conceptualize the material. Try recalling and identifying major points (heading/ sub-headings) and answers to questions from the “Q’ step.
Review (R)
The final “R” is “Review”. Once you reach the end of the passage, say back to yourself what the point of the whole passage is — again, using your own words.
A.Making meaning with time management |
B.This survey step only takes 3-5 minutes |
C.Arise questions about the content of the reading |
D.This process suggests better understanding a topic |
E.This recital step may be done either in an oral or written format |
F.This means reading in order to answer the questions raised under “Q’ |
G.The method offers a more efficient and active approach to reading comprehension |
3 . Will your kids love your favorite childhood reads? Let’s get to it: Five Little Peppers and How They Grew. I’m reaching way back with this one (1881), but after all, who doesn’t love a good rags to-riches story?
Oh, those little Peppers. How well I remember Phronsie, Ben, Polly, Joel and Davie, and how hard they worked in the little brown house to help their poor mother, Mamsie. My kids are not yet at an age when they realize just how poor the Peppers are. But my kids are as drawn to this story as I was as a child. And I am not the one to turn down an opportunity to share an example of children gladly helping their mother.
I’m not reaching back quite as far with 1943’s Cherry Ames, Student Nurse by Helen Wells, but convincing my kids that once it wasn’t easy for nurses to wear caps and dresses. When I was little, I couldn’t get enough of Cherry’s adventures. How pioneering Cherry was! She had a job when there were few jobs available to women, she never got married, and she solved mysteries when men couldn’t. Cherry always knew what to do. She was smart, pretty, strong and ambitious. I love her.
I know the time will come when my son asks, “Come on, Mom, Didn’t you read any books with men in them?” and I’ll have to answer honestly, “No. But maybe one day a few.”
The day will come when we can go back to the library and see what is new on the shelves, and that will be a great day. But for now, I plan not to let any book on our shelves go to waste. It may seem that reaching for a book that’s more than a century older than my kids is just as ambitious as reading Frankenstein, but I’m really confident, this time.

Last month, I borrowed a English novel named Great Expectations. To tell the truth, it was the first time that I have read an English novel. It was difficultly because there were many new words. I had to spend much time looking up for new words. However, I forced myself read one page each day. Sometimes I tried guessing the meanings of the words instead of turning to the dictionary, what seemed to help me remember the words better. In this way, I have gradual learnt many new word. I suggest you can read as many English books as you can because it’s a good way to improve my English.
5 . Some people are using old books to create works of art, including sculptures. They can change the shape of a hardcover book so it becomes 3-D. The resulting sculpture has not only a length and width, but depth. The process can be very simple, and the result is often beautiful.
There are many kinds of book folding. Artists fold, bend, and sometimes, cut a book's pages while keeping them together. The art works can be hung on a wall or placed on a table. "They look impressive on the wall," says writer Candice Caldwell. "A group of six of these on the wall together can look really beautiful, and they're just really simple folds."
In 2003, Caldwell started making clocks from old books when she saw plans for a simple book-folding project in a do-it-yourself magazine. She has since taught several friends and her mother how to create wall art from books.
Caldwell operates a blog. She writes about reshaping everyday objects like books for uses other than what they were designed for.
Clare Youngs, who is an illustrator (插图画家), has written a book called Folded Book Art. She says book folding is easy. From her home in England, she told the Associated Press by email that "It looks as if it is complex and unachievable, but it is really easy to do. You just don't tell anyone how easy it is and they will be amazed at your creations."
Youngs began making art from book pages several years ago when she saw pictures of folded books at the website Pinterest com. She also watched some videos on You Tube that tell how to create art from books.
Youngs suggests folding cooking recipe and photography books. She says that "If it's really visual and really colorful when you start to fold them, you get a whole new look on the wall."
