文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述的是作者的阅读之旅,随着作者对阅读的投入,作者也真正爱上了阅读。

1 . I arrived home from work, my mind racing. I was scheduled to perform an experiment using a pricey piece of equipment, but I had spent the whole day worrying about the experiment which was on the top of my agenda (日程), and I amazingly longed to shut off my anxious thoughts. So after dinner, I made a cup of hot chocolate, stretched myself on my sofa, and opened a page. Almost instantly, my mind left behind the details of experimental design and stepped into a land of monsters, magic dust, and man-like bears comprising a wonderful world distinct (不同的) from my daily life. It was exactly what I needed.

Growing up, I was virtually never a big fan of novels. My classmates would be crazy about the latest Harry Potter book, while my copy sat collecting dust on a shelf. Instead, I would choose to read through the reference books related to my academic fields for better grades. After I started graduate school, extracurricular reading didn’t appeal to me at all but I spent most of my time on campus digesting research papers and textbooks and my mind couldn’t handle processing fact-filled nonfiction books at home, too. So I knew that I needed to find a way to enjoy reading again.

To help me stick with it, I made a New Year’s resolution: I would read two fiction books per month for the entire year. The result was an almost instant appreciation of fiction, along with many unexpected results including ones that have benefited my schoolwork.

What surprised me the most was how much I learned. Some of the best books I read were historical fictional stories happening in a realistic historical setting. I learned about life in different countries, as well as struggles people there faced during difficult periods in their histories. The books have helped me build sympathy and understanding, with an unexpected benefit: I’ve started to think more deeply about the diversity of issues in the scientific community and could serve it, heart and soul.

3 . Reading is vital but how can one choose the right books to read and where can one find them? A few famous people may give you some helpful tips.

       Read books from past eras.

1     Otherwise, you’d be “completely dependent on the preferences and fashions of your times,” just as Albert Einstein put it. “Somebody who reads only newspapers and books of contemporary (同时期的) author looks to me like an extremely near-sighted person who dislikes eyeglasses,” he said.

           2

Reading too wide a variety in too short a time would keep the teachings from leaving a lasting impression on you. Seneca the Younger, a first-century Roman philosopher, suggested that “you must linger (持续看) among a limited number of master thinkers, and understand their works, if you would obtain ideas which shall win firm hold in your mind.

       Shop at secondhand bookstores.

Virginia Woolf believed the works in secondhand bookstores have an attraction which the usual volumes of the library lack. Browsing through these books gives you the chance to run into something that wouldn’t have risen to the attention of librarians and booksellers.     3

       Check out authors’ reading lists.

In his 1940 guide How to Read a Book, American educator Mortimer J. Adler talked about how to choose books. He attached importance to those that oilier authors consider worth reading.     4     Mortimer wrote that “one way to understand them is to read the books they read.”

Make the final decision by yourself.

5     It’s you yourself who should choose what, how and when to read. Theodore Roosevelt recommended choosing books on subjects that interest you and letting your feeling guide you to your next great read.

A.Great authors are great readers.
B.Participate in a reading challenge.
C.Leave some room for older works.
D.Don’t jump too quickly from book to book.
E.Analyze your options with Amazon Best Seller Rankings.
F.There’s no “best books” list that everyone should follow.
G.Usually they are much more selective in organizing their collections.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了Annalee Newitz所著的《失落之城:四座世界古城的生与死》这本书的相关信息。

8 . It’s a familiar plot in movies and books: A bright-eyed man moves to the big city in search of fame and fortune. In the noises and lights, all hopes and dreams come true. But why do we stick to this old story? In Four Lost Cities, author Annalee Newitz explores ancient settlements to find out why people flood into big cities — and why they leave.

The book is divided into four enjoyable, snack-sized sections, one for each city. Each section is accompanied by a handy map, drawn by artist Jason Thompson in an engaging cartoon style.

Rather than dry history, Newitz makes a special effort to highlight the oddities and innovations that made these cities unique. Take Catalhöyük, the oldest city they feature, which boomed between 7500 and 5700 BC in what is now Turkey. This ancient city existed for nearly 2, 000 years despite lacking things that we might consider necessary for a city, such as roads, special public spaces or shopping areas.

The section on Cahokia (AD 1050 to 1350) —located in what is now Illinois — offers an unexpected reason for a city’s emergence. Many people link cities with capitalism and trade. Cahokia’s 30-meter-tall pyramids, 20-hectare (公顷) squares and a population (at the time) bigger than Paris suggest that spiritual revival (复苏) can also build a large city. Cahokia and Angkor, which reached its peak from AD 800 to 1431 in what is now Cambodia, also show how cities can form when power gets concentrated in a few influential people.

Each city, of course, eventually fell. But Newitz also reveals something else: Collapsing infrastructure (基础设施) provided the final push that kept people away. Here we spot our potential future, as climate crises and political instability threaten our own urban networks. But Newitz’s vivid imaginings, bright language and boundless enthusiasm manage to keep the tone optimistic. These cities did end, yes. Yet the people lived on.

1. Why is a bright-eyed man mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.To introduce the topic.B.To raise some doubts.
C.To make a comparison.D.To present a phenomenon.
2. How is paragraph 3 developed?
A.By citing data.B.By defining a term.
C.By giving an example.D.By telling a story.
3. What was the reason for the rise of Cahokia and Angkor?
A.Trade.B.Capitalism.
C.A large population.D.Concentration of power.
4. What does the author think of Four Lost Cities?
A.It features a cartoon style.B.It offers insight into our future.
C.It consists of no original ideas.D.It promotes the ancient cultures.

文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章评论并介绍了Cal Newport的一本有关《深度工作》的书。

9 . You can get a clear picture about Deep Work by Cal Newport in 5 minutes. Deep Work tells us professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that you push your cognitive (认知的) capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value and improve your skill. The ability to perform deep work is becoming increasingly rare at exactly the same time it is becoming increasingly valuable in our economy. As a consequence, the few who develop the skill, and then make it the core of their working life will thrive (蓬勃发展).

The book tells us the core abilities for thriving in the new economy, which are the ability to quickly master hard things, the ability to produce a high level, in terms of both quality and speed. If you can’t learn, you can’t thrive. If you don’t produce, you won’t thrive — no matter how skilled or talented you are. If you haven’t mastered deep work, you’ll struggle to learn hard things. To learn hard things quickly, you must focus intensely without distraction.

The key to developing a deep work habit is to move beyond good intentions and add routines and habits to your working life designed to minimize a state of unbroken concentration. To master the art of deep work, therefore, you must take back control of your time and attention from the many entertainments on the Internet that attempt to steal them. Adopt a tool only if its positive impacts on these factors substantially outweigh its negative impacts. It’s crucial that you figure out in advance what you’re going to do with your evenings and weekends before they begin.

In the end of Deep Work, we can know that the ability to concentrate is a skill that gets valuable things done. If you’re struggling to use your mind to its fullest capacity to create things that matter, then you’ll discover, as others have before you, that depth generates a life rich with productivity and meaning.

1. What is presented in the first paragraph?
A.Theoretical introduction.B.Daring anticipation.
C.Practical examples.D.Detailed analyses.
2. Who will thrive in this new economy?
A.Those who’re willing to help others.B.Those who’re very skilled or talented.
C.Those who’re the best at what they do.D.Those who struggle to learn hard things.
3. Which of the following can help develop a deep work habit?
A.Making a flexible schedule.B.Quitting social media.
C.Using on-demand distraction.D.Forming a simple habit.
4. What is the text?
A.A book review.B.A news report.
C.An exam paper.D.An economic article.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了阅读给孩子带来的各种好处。

10 . Sitting close with your little ones from an early age and enjoying a book together is always a great way to spend time, but do you know reading to your children has a whole range of benefits that will give them a flying start in life?

Firstly, it’s a great introduction to vocabulary. Seeing an adult sounding out the words and linking them to the shapes on the page begins to build up vocabulary that they will use for the rest of their life.

Then there are a variety of good effects of hearing stories which improve their minds and develop social awareness and skills. At a time when they are perhaps stuck indoors more than ever before, reading is the best way to motivate (激发) children’s imagination. They can travel to the moon, meet the Gruffalo and pop into a chocolate factory all before they’ve even had lunch!

There’s no better way to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes than reading their stories and seeing things from another’s point of view is a great way to build empathy (共鸣), tolerance and other qualities needed. There are some fantastic children’s books which show characters acting as strong role models. These stories can encourage future leaders and thinkers, so every child can feel they can achieve their dreams, from the Little Leaders series to Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls (叛逆女孩).

Now is the perfect time to build up a library of excellent reads ready for children to enjoy now and in the future. They will create memories to last a lifetime. On top of the benefits for your little ones, its fun, relaxing and a great chance to go back and reread the best books from your own childhood.

1. What kind of people is the text written for?
A.Parents.B.Children.
C.Teachers.D.Leaders.
2. What does the underlined phrase “pop into” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Start.B.Visit.
