Delivering Food by Drone

A Singapore restaurant plans to use drones(无人机)to transport food and drinks     1     the kitchen to a wait station near customers’ tables.

Infinium Robotics, the Singapore company that’s developing the drones for restaurant chain Timbre, has spent the past two weeks testing the technology at the restaurant before it opens each night for business and hopes to have it in place by the end of the year.

But how does the drone know where to land? What if someone bumps into the drone or is standing in its way? "There’s no chance at all     2     it will hit anything," says Infinium Robotics chief executive Junyang Woon.

The drones automatically charge while     3     (wait)in the kitchen.     4     the chef puts an order on the drone, he hits a button on a keypad and the drone automatically flies to one of two wait stations. Sense-and-avoid technology     5     (build)into the drone won’t allow it to land at the wait station if anything is in its way. The drones     6     (equip)with sonar and an infrared sensor, too.

A waiter then removes the food or drink from the drone and hits a button     7     sends it back to the kitchen. The drones, weighing a little over five pounds,     8     carry just over four pounds of food. Infinium Robotics is working on a model that will carry twice as much food.

"Its job is to help the waiters to reduce some of their boring tasks," Woon said. "If they let the robots do the job, they can concentrate on interacting with customers to bring about     9     (high)customer satisfaction and dining experience."Since it drew recent media attention, Woon     10     (hear)from resorts and restaurants in 10 countries, including the United States.

The preparations for the dinner of the Spring Festival are hard work. We still have the dinner     2     the same people. The occasion is more enjoyable without all that tiring cooking, and the dishes taste     3     (good)! Does Takeaway Exist in Ancient China?

As early as in the Song Dynasty, “takeout” services were already available. In Zhang Zcduan's popular painting Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival, there is a restaurant boy who has just come out of the shop with “to-go boxes” in his left hand and tableware (餐具) in his right, still     1     (wear) the shop apron and seeming to deliver the food somewhere. That image     2     (believe) to be a reflection of the original takeaway boy.

In ancient times, there were three ways to order food. The first is servant order. Send a family retainer (仆人) to go to a restaurant and make     3     order. When the food is ready, there is someone who     4     (particular) delivers the food to the customer's home, and then gets paid. The second is agreed delivery. Sign a long-term     5     (agree) with the restaurant. The store,    6    every agreed day, will pack the food well and send it to the customer's home. The last one is door-to-door selling. The sellers from restaurants sell the food door to door, especially in the entertainment places like theatres,    7     are crowded with many people.

The to-go box, wenpan (warm tray),     8     (consist) of two layers of porcelain. When     9     (use),   hot water is injected into the interlayer of the plate     10     (keep) the dishes warm. In this way, the dish is still warm when it arrives at the customer's home.

Are you on a diet? Then maybe you should consider     1    (sit) by the window the next time you eat out.

A new book claims that     2     you sit in a restaurant can affect how much you consume.

A new research found that people sitting farthest from the front door ate the fewest salads and were 73 percent     3    (likely) to order dessert.

Those seated at a dark table ate heavier food and ordered more of it     4     diners seated at bright bar tables ordered more salads and fewer desserts.

According to the researchers, the darker it is, the more invisible you     5     feel, the less easy it is to see how much you’re eating and the less guilty you are when you eat more.

In contrast,     6    (see) the sunlight, people or trees outside might make you more conscious of     7     you look, might make you think about walking or might make you   want a green salad.

The researchers also noted that slim diners chewed around 15 times per mouthful, three chews more than heavier diners. By eating more slowly, the diner consumes less in the time    8     takes for the brain to register satisfaction.

5 . 阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(不多于1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

Recently I dined at a “dark restaurant”,     1     people eat in complete darkness,     2     (serve) by blind staff. I wanted to understand the experience of being blind, and I thought     3     (eat) would be the most difficult activity.

It was a difficult meal. Because we couldn’t see where anything was, my friend and I knocked over glasses and     4     (drop) food. My senses of taste and smell became more sensitive, and I ate much more     5     (slow). Pouring water was very difficult, plus I kept drinking from my friend’s glass.

After     6     (fail) to pick up any food with a fork, I decided to use my hands. I reached down,     7     (expect) rice and vegetables, but instead I stuck my hand into a bowl of warm, thick soup. “It’s best to use a spoon for this course,” the waiter said into my ear, helpfully but much too late. Even using a spoon, most of the soup ended up on my shirt. I felt     8     (embarrass), even though no one could see me.

Our waiter advised us     9     (lift) the plates and bowls close to our faces. However, I still left the restaurant with a sense of     10     (hungry), though I was much more aware of the challenges that blind people face.

A man came to the USA from another country. After     1    (settle) down at an island, he went into a cafeteria to get something     2    (eat). He sat down at an empty table and waited for someone to take his order, but nobody did.     3    (final) a woman with a tray full of food sat down opposite him and told him     4     the cafeteria worked.

“Start out at that end,” she said. “Just go along the line and pick out what you want. At     5     other end they’ll tell you how much you have to pay. ”

“I was     6    (surprise) how everything worked in the USA,” the man told his friend. “Life’s a cafeteria there. You can get anything you want as long as you are willing to pay the price. You can even get success,     7     you will never get it if you wait for someone to bring it to you. You have to get up and get it     8    (you).”

You can’t change the inevitable. The only thing you can do     9    (be) to control your attitude. Once you reach that point in life,     10    (happy) and satisfaction can’t be too far away.
