1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a yearly basis, funded by Mr. Alden, a Field Day was held in the town of Silver City. Every year the boys were in training for the races. And not only adults but boys and girls trained hard for Field Day.

There were prizes for all kinds of races — running and swimming and jumping. But the best one was a foot race, called a free-for-all, because anyone could run in it. Mr. Alden gave a prize of twenty-five dollars and medals to the winners. Sometimes a boy won the championship. Sometimes a girl. Once a fat man had won it.

On Field Day, Mike was cutting the grass for Mr. Moore in the neighborhood to earn his living expenses. Suddenly Mr. Moore stopped his car in the street and called to Mike. “Hop in,” he said. “Today is Field Day, and I want you to see the races.” Soon Mike found himself sitting on the bleachers (露天看台). By and by, a small boy climbed up the bleachers and sat beside him.

Then a man called, “Free-for-all! Come and get ready!”

Being a newcomer, Mike didn’t know what a free-for-all was. The boy next to him explained to him and pointed at the winner of last year’s race. Obviously, he was smaller than Mike, but he was older. Suddenly, Mike stood up and quietly left the bleachers. He went to the room where the boys were getting ready for the race.

“Do you want to run in the race?” a man asked him.

“Yes, I do,” replied Mike.

The man gave him some track clothes with the number 4 on the front and back.

“Where did you train?” he asked.

“I never was trained,” said Mike.

“These boys have been training all year,” remarked the man.

“Oh, I don’t think I’ll win,” responded Mike. “But I am keen to run. It’s my passion and it’s lots of fun.”

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了Mike Leach对橄榄球队的影响,其目的在于纪念他。

7 . Mike Leach, the bad-tempered and pioneering college football coach who helped completely change the passing game with the Air Raid offense (进攻), died from a heart condition at the age of 61. “Mike was a giving and attentive husband, father and grandfather. He was able to take part in organ donation at UMMC as a final act of charity,” the family said in a statement.

In 21 seasons as a head coach at Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State, Leach went 158-107. His impact on all levels of football—from high school to the NFL—over the last two decades runs deep and will continue for years to come. Mississippi State President Mark Keenum said, “His passing brings great sadness to our university, to the Southeastern Conference, and to all who loved college football.”

Leach’s teams were continuing winners at programs where success did not come easy. And his quarterbacks put up massive passing statistics, running a relatively simple offense called the Air Raid that he did not invent but certainly mastered.

“You have to make choices and limit what you’re going to teach and what you’re going to do. That’s the hard part,” Leach told the AP about the Air Raid’s economical playbook. After years of questions about whether Leach’s spread offense could be successful in the nation’s most talented football conference, the Bulldogs set an SEC record for yards passing in his very first game against defending national champion LSU.

In 1987, he broke into college coaching at Cal Poly, but it was at Iowa Wesleyan where he found his muse. Head coach Hal Mumme had invented the Air Raid while coaching high school in Texas. At Iowa Wesleyan, with Leach as offensive coordinator (协调者), it began to take hold and completely change the way football was played.

From then, the Air Raid spread like wild and became the noticeable way offense was run in the Big 12.

1. Which word best describes Mike Leach as a football coach?
A.Friendly.B.Generous.C.Influential.D.Demanding.
2. What makes the Air Raid popular?
A.Leach’s profitable playbook.B.Leach’s spread of it.
C.The defending of Leach’s teams.D.The easy access to it.
3. What does the underlined word “muse” refer to in paragraph 5?
A.Fan.B.Boss.C.Invention.D.Inspiration.
4. What is the purpose of this text?
A.To explain passing skills.B.To encourage donations.
C.To honour Mike Leach.D.To introduce Hal Mumme.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了成功的运动员需要技术、耐心和决心,还要有良好的态度和团队精神,并提出了成为优秀运动员的几个方法。

9 . If sports are something that interests you, obviously you would want to be good at them. Succeeding at a sport takes skill, and skill takes patience and determination.     1     Skill alone may take you far, but you’ll never go all the way unless you have the right attitude and team spirit to back it up.

Begin from basics first.

It’s common that young athletes want to jump into the advanced skills quickly. This isn’t an effective way to spend training time. If you’re new to a sport, take as much time as you need to get the basic movements down properly.     2

Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet.

Everyone should make a point of eating a diet that benefits their body. This is especially true if you want to be great at sports.     3     Base your diet on vegetables, leafy greens, lean proteins, and whole grains.

Set great goals for yourself.

This does not mean being unrealistic, or saying you’re going to go professional within a year.     4     Give yourself a suitable amount of time to achieve that goal, and break it down into smaller parts if the goal is especially big.

    5

Being good at sports means more than physical strength and speed. In order to be truly great, you need to apply positive attitude to the way you treat other players, even if they’re on the other team. If you lose a match, accept the loss and show respect to the other player for their victory.

A.Let yourself have fun.
B.Show good sportsmanship.
C.However, there are other things you need to think about.
D.It will make advanced skills a lot easier to grasp in the long run.
E.If you stop practicing, chances are that someone more determined will beat you.
F.Eating junk food will work against whatever efforts you make in the gym.
G.Instead, you should take a look at what you are, and figure out where you’d like to be.
