1 . Being seventeen without money can be depressing. When the opportunity arrives to earn some needed cash, it would be foolish to pass it up. It is for this reason that when the opportunity to referee elementary basketball came my way, I jumped at the chance. I thought it would be a fun way to earn some “easy money”.
During the years I played on the court and watched the games, I often found myself criticizing the referees. I was completely convinced that I could do a much better job because of my love for basketball and my familiarity of the game. How difficult could it be, especially with a bunch of third graders?
I looked forward to my first night as a referee, but all of my fantasies wore off from the beginning of the game. These sweet and innocent third grade boys immediately transformed into horrible creatures right before me. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine the extent of competitiveness in the game. A battle was in progress on the court while the inhumane bystanders cheered and yelled from the stands. My only companion, the whistle, suffered from a severe case of stage fear, filling my head with doubt every time I wished to blow it. My lack of action fueled the heartless crowd. Even on the rare occasions when my whistle gained enough courage to pause the fighting, the pitiless bystanders still couldn't calm. The sense of failure flooded every inch of my soul. With only five minutes remaining, Michael, another referee, came in time, saving me from losing my mind. In a flash, I passed my whistle and quickly ran to the safety of the stands.
I realized just how difficult refereeing was. I could have let this heartbreaking evening ruin my future on the court, but instead it stimulated a sense of determination in me to do it better. I still hope to become a great referee someday. In order for this to become a reality, it will take many hours of practice and hard work. No matter how much I wish the cash would be handed to me without requiring any effort, I learned from this experience that there is no such thing as “easy money”.

4 . The Olympic spirit is about sportsmanship, personal sacrifice, and a strong will to reach your goals.
The importance of the Olympic spirit goes far beyond the sports events. And it’s not just for professional athletes, either.
It’s not easy to describe the Olympic spirit in words. Yet everyone who meets it probably knows what it means. One central aspect is having the knowledge that the greatest reward doesn’t lie in getting to a particular goal or victory.
Of course, we’re not trying to suggest that victory means nothing to an athlete or that goals aren’t important. When we speak of personal or professional dreams or goals, we’re aware that reaching the objective is always one’s greatest wish.
Nevertheless, we shouldn’t forget that victory is the result of a long process. It’s only possible through the effort that leads up to it.
Let’s take a track and field race as an example-just to keep going along the line of this sports thread.
A.Always try to achieve perfection. |
B.The Olympic spirit speaks to all of us. |
C.It’s about the promotion of certain values. |
D.There are no people who are born champions. |
E.Instead, the process itself is the greatest reward. |
F.Another person’s success is no reason to give up or envy. |
G.There can only be one winner at the end of every track or trial. |
5 . Charlie Boice from Georgia has been crowned this year’s “Papa” Hemingway at a look-alike contest. The 56-year-old retired air traffic controller won the annual competition at Sloppy Joe’s Bar in Florida—a place Hemingway often visited during his time in Key West in the 1930s—on his 15th attempt.
Dressed in a wool fisherman's sweater in a bid to imitate photographer Yousuf Karsh's famous portrait of the world-famous American writer, Boice looked extremely happy as he was declared winner. He was chosen as the winner by the judging committee made up of former “Papa” Hemingways, all of whom look strikingly similar. Speaking to CBS Miami, Boice said. “Winning the Hemingway Look-Alike Contest is fantastic. I feel like a champion. Hemingway was a champion.”
During the contest, the 122 competitors had to take to the stage and attempt to convince the judges that they were the most similar to the “Papa” character of Hemingway, who won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1954 but committed suicide in 1961.Many did so by performing poetry or singing.
The competition, which helps to raise money for a Hemingway Look-Alike Society-administrated college scholarship fund, is a highlight of the annual Hemingway Days festival honoring the author. Just before the competition, an unusual event Running of the Bulls took place with the look-alikes. The video made by Florida Keys News Bureau shows the white-bearded men chanting and singing as they march through Key West's historic downtown with several life-sized, but fake bulls.
Also on Saturday, a California community college professor won the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition, which attracted as many as 857American and international entries. Riba Taylor of Palm Springs won the first award with her story titled “Between My Ribs.” Lorian Hemingway, Ernest Hemingway’s granddaughter, said Taylor displayed deep sympathy in her story to the woman who lost her love, a life changed and the power of memory.

6 . Japan's government is facing criticism (批评)for pressing its plans to hold the Tokyo Olympics even as the country deals with COVID-19. More than 300,000 people have signed a petition (请愿书)calling for not holding the Games, which are set to open on July 23. An advertisement said people were in danger of being “killed by politics”.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has repeatedly stated that the government is continuing with plans, promising the games will happen safely. Some Japanese lawmakers have questioned those statements as some hospitals still struggle to find beds for those sick with COVID-19.
Last month, Suga declared a third state of emergency in Osaka, as well as in Tokyo and two other areas. That lasted through May 31, 2020. On Wednesday, two more areas were placed under emergency measures. It is estimated that only 1 percent of the public has so far been fully vaccinated although millions of vaccines (疫苗)sit unused in very low temperature storage.
Suga and his government have faced criticism for being too slow and soft on virus measures. Japan has been able to keep its number of virus cases and deaths below those in the U.S. and Europe without restrictive measures. But the results are worse than in some other parts of Asia. Japan has also fallen far behind in vaccinations. Though officials blame a lack of supplies from Europe, progress has been slowed because of staff shortages. About 7.6 million vaccines remain unused in freezers.
The president of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee, Seiko Hashimoto, said that Japanese athletes were likely to get vaccines before the games began. "In Japan, the vaccination of the citizens isn't going very well," she said, adding that the public saw giving the athletes vaccinations as a special treatment, so this gives rise to dissatisfaction among the citizens toward the games.
