6 . When visitors enter Planet Word, a new museum in Washington, D. C , they will see Speaking Willow, a tall art piece representing a tree. As they pass under the artwork, they can hear recordings of speech in hundreds of languages coming from the tree. Most words sound foreign to the listeners. The different voices also speak at the same time. The resulting clamor is similar to that made in a crowded theater before a show begins.
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer completed the piece last year. On his website, the artist says that Speaking Willow “reminds us that language is what defines our specific communities and connects our many cultures.” Lozano-Hemmer made the piece specially for the museum.
It is the first of many immersive (身临其境的) experiences for visitors at Planet Word, a museum all about words and language. The exhibits playfully explore the lager and complex subject of language.
In one room, a video plays, showing babies saying their first words. Another room, called “Where Do Words Come From”, teaches the history of some common English words. The space includes a 22-foot-tali “Wall of Words”, where visitors speak into devices and learn about the roots of the English language.
Another room invites listeners to speak and learn about different languages. Native speakers of 28 languages and two sign languages teach people sayings in those languages. They also explain how language shapes their understanding of the world and how words cannot be separated from culture.
Other rooms explore the different ways language is used — from humor and song writing to public speaking and advertising. Visitors can sing karaoke while learning about song writing, record a famous speech, play a joke-telling game, and teach a computer how to make cartoons. Almost every exhibit is interactive and most ask visitors to speak aloud.
One exhibit room is all about books. It is designed to look like an old, rich library. Books line the shelves. When a book is placed on the table, a recorded reading begins and pictures appear.

8 . There are many ways in which you can add a little bit of excitement to your life, and learning a second language is definitely one you should consider.
Travel abroad with confidence.
If you want to get some adventure, then going to a foreign country is one great way of getting started. However, if the thought of heading off somewhere abroad is a worry for you, then you might want to consider whether speaking the language would let you travel more confidently.
Get off the beaten track.
Speaking to the locals is another must if you want a trip which is full of action. These are the people who know where the parties, the festivals and the big sporting events are going on.
A.Learn before you go. |
B.Learn from the locals. |
C.Of course, you can learn while you are abroad. |
D.If you never thought about doing this, here are a few reasons to do so. |
E.Being fluent in the local tongue also means more opportunities open up for you. |
F.Travelling is less stressful when you know what the people around you are saying. |
G.If you’ve felt alone or left out in a foreign country, this could be the ideal solution. |
Charles V (1500-1558), Holy Roman Emperor, once said, “I speak Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men and German to my horse.”
I first heard the Spanish language in 2017while lining up to ride the London Eye. Two boys were standing ahead of me, and they were murmuring something in the sweetest language. I asked them what the language is, and they told me it was Spanish. They taught me my first Spanish word, “hola”, and we became friends soon after.
In the fall of the same year, I selected Spanish as a compulsory foreign language course throughout the next six years in my junior and senior high schools.
As the old saying goes, “there is nothing impossible to him who will try.” I had a burning desire and persistence to learn Spanish well. My unflagging interest and passion helped me succeed.
Spanish trills were quite difficult for me at the very beginning. The saying goes that practice makes perfect, and learning a language is no exception. I repeatedly tried to figure out where to place my tongue to pronounce perfect trills.
There is no easy short-term solution to master a foreign language. Spanish conjugations are much more complicated than English ones, so I practiced more. The cycle of learning, forgetting and memorizing continued.
Reaching milestones has always been important. I set up several goals for learning Spanish in 12 semesters. For example, I drew up a plan last winter to pass the DELE B2 test before graduating from my high school.
Haste makes waste. I usually split up my tasks into six sections — vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, writing and oral practices. I regularly read Spanish books, recited words and phrases, and kept on doing grammar exercises. I did listening exercises every day while showering or bathing. I wrote emails or letters to my Spanish friends as practice and took all opportunities to talk with my Spanish teachers and people I met online to enhance my oral Spanish.
Patience is my middle name, and I prefer a long-term plan to learn Spanish well. I believe that success only comes with practice, patience and persistence. There's no end to learning!
1. Why did the author began to study Spanish? (No more than 10 words)2. What was hard for him to learn at the beginning? (No more than 2 words)
3. What is the second-to-last paragraph mainly about? (No more than 10 words)
4. What is the meaning of the underlined word “enhance”? (1 word)
1. 利用课余时间多听多读以增加词汇量;
2. 一旦遇到疑难问题多与老师同学交流;
3. 不向困难屈服。
注意:
⒈ 词数100左右,首句已为你写好,不计入总词数;
⒉ 可以适当增加细节,以便行文连贯。
