3 . Teaching Kids Pet Care
Growing up with a family pet can be a wonderful experience for children.
Make some basic ground rules before bringing home a new pet.
Always supervise young children and pets, and if you can’t supervise then be sure to separate them. Never leave a young child unsupervised with any pet, even when it’s your own well-loved and trusted dog.
Teach kids how to help everyday pet care. Younger children can help fill the water bowl.
Encourage trips to the vet, where children will learn more about animal health and the responsibility of caring for a pet. More interestingly, enroll a new puppy into puppy classes can help pets learn good manners.
A.Warn kids that pets are not toys. |
B.Teach kids to make friends with pets. |
C.While older ones can take care of feeding or changing the litter tray. |
D.And also pet care can be beneficial for childhood development and health. |
E.The experience will have a life-long influence on children’s mental health. |
F.Meanwhile, read some age-appropriate books about the type of pet you are getting. |
G.Dog bites to children are mostly caused by their own dog or the dog of a friend or neighbor. |
4 . We have a Norwegian elkhound (柴犬) named Torgy. Elkhounds are beautiful. They are medium-sized, strong, square-looking dogs. Their thick, silver-gray fur (皮毛) has a pure white undercoat, making a kind of flag that moves up and down when they run. They run everywhere. In fact, they are good at roaming (闲逛), and Torgy is better than most of his breed.
In August, the heat wave started. For quite a few days, Torgy started disappearing in the afternoon, and he wouldn’t show up again until we were getting supper on the table. Every day, Torgy hung around during the cool of the morning, but as the sun rose to its full height, he got up from his favorite spot under the elm tree, stretched, shook himself all over, and ran out of the yard.
There was no water from the stream or mud from the fishing pond. No dust from the country roads or weeds from the woods. Why could Torgy come home remarkably clean as a dog on the move?
“Where have you been, Torgy?” I turned his head toward me and looked him in the eyes. He licked my nose.
A week later, Mom took us on a walk downtown. It is only four blocks from our house to the middle of the town, which is how small it is. We walked down Division Street, which brought us right by the Webb Fur Salon, the newest store in town and the only one with air conditioning.
In the middle of summer, it wasn’t easy to sell furs. It was said Mr. Webb, the store owner, was offering some discounts in order to attract customers. The air conditioning also provided a comfortable environment for this purpose.
“Let’s see which fur I’m going to pick out today,” Mom said as she approached the display window where the expensive, fur-hanging mannequins (人体模特) were on show. She looked in the window and stopped dead in shock.
Paragraph 1: Her mouth kept opening and closing but no sound came out.

5 . A small group of paleontologists (古生物学家) recently discovered 10 species of ancient mammals previously unknown to science with the help of an enormous number of helpers at their dig site: ants.
The study of ancient mammals sheds new light on the diversity of mammals that existed in North America around 33 million to 35 million years ago, when the climate was changing drastically. It also pays attention to the harvester ants, with which researchers have long had a love-hate relationship. “The ants are not fantastic when they’re biting you,” said Samantha Hopkins, a professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Oregon. “But I’ve got to appreciate them because they make my job a whole lot easier.”
Most species of harvester ants live in subterranean caves that sit beneath a small hill of dirt. They strengthen the dirt by covering it with bits of rock and other tough materials. The ants have been known to travel over a hundred feet from their caves and to dig six feet deep in pursuit of materials that help secure their caves. The materials include fossils. Harvester ants can carry materials 10 times to 50 times the weight of their body, although they do not weigh very much, so the heaviest fossil they can collect weighs less than the average pill.
Given the size, harvester ant hills are hot spots for what scientists call microvertebrate (微型脊椎动物) fossils, which are animal fossils too small to see without a microscope. For over a century, scientists like Dr. Hopkins have found sediment (沉积物) off the sides of harvester ant hills in search of these fossils, making it easier to find large numbers of fossilized mammal teeth without spending hours in the field sifting through sand and dirt.

Should Hand Feeding Dolphins Be Encouraged?
Some tourist centers train Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins to approach beachside public sighting areas or boats by hand-feeding them small amounts of fish every day. Because hand-fed males aggressively attack each other over the food, putting themselves and nearby humans in danger, tourist centers focus their hand feeding only on female dolphins, says Valerie Senigaglia at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia
But recent studies have shown that only 38% of the calves (崽) of hand-fed wild dolphins survive to three years of age, which is much lower than the average 77% survival rate for wild calves in general. To better understand why, Senigaglia and her colleagues evaluated the social behavior of dolphins around the Bunbury coast in Western Australia. In particular, they observed the individual behavior and movement of 35 dolphins, including 13 that had been hand-fed using a small boat. They regularly followed each dolphin for periods lasting from 20 minutes to 3 hours for two years in a row for a total of 180 hours.
They found that hand-fed dolphins swam in relatively large groups, but more readily broke away from them to join different ones. In general, they created weak ties with other group members. “You can feel lonely in a room full of people and it’s the same thing for dolphins,” says Senigaglia. Free-swimming dolphins that are fed by hand become less socially involved with their peers. As a result, their calves may grow up lacking vital social skills-which could explain, at least in part, why they are twice as likely to die before reaching adulthood as wild calves generally.
No wonder animal right activists are calling on the practice of hand-feeding dolphins to be stopped.

During the wartime, military technologies developed quickly. Air raids (空袭) had an extremely destructive impact on wildlife populations as they contributed to the destruction of habitats. Apart from the bombs dropped during air raids, aircraft were also a significant source of air pollution. The most devastating environmental impact of the war was caused by the atomic bombs used by the US on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The atomic bombs destroyed the natural wildlife in the area in seconds. A significant number of fish and land animals died.
