3 . In 1867 when Canada was created, a towering Silver Maple tree standing in front of Alexander Muir’s house in Toronto gave him an idea. He would write a poem and a song about the great tree, so common in Canada and so symbolic, to celebrate Canada’s Confederation (联邦).
His song was called The Maple Leaf Forever and it has been the unofficial Canadian anthem (国歌) to this day.
Last July during a major storm, the tree was knocked down. It fell across a house and a street. But because it was an important historic tree, most of the wood was saved rather than being destroyed.
Recently woodworkers at The Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto, a community projects centre, cut the wood into logs and other usable pieces. The pieces were given to artists to create about 150 different projects.
One artist took a piece of tree. On it, he’ll carve a series of historical Canadian views. Another wood carver is making beautiful round wooden bowls. Yet another made an interesting candlestick from the tree’s branches.
Other woodworkers are making wood wig stands for cancer patients who lose their hair. Still others are taking small pieces of wood and making them into pens. And some of the wood was made into gavels (小木槌) to be used by Toronto’ s city councilors (市议员) . Some of the projects will be on public show while some will be personally owned.
The people in Toronto who have lived near the tree for years and try to protect it from harm are very sad to see the old tree go. But they are glad to see that their maple tree will live forever in the hearts and homes of many people.

4 . Gone with the Wind was removed from the HBO Max streaming platform Tuesday, as mass protests against racism and police violence cause television networks to re-assess their offerings.
The multiple Oscar-winning US Civil War movie released in 1939 remains one of the highest-rated movies of all time, but its description of satisfied slaves and heroic slaveholders has led to criticism.
“Gone With The Wind is a product of its time and shows some of the racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been very common in American society.” an HBO Max spokesperson said in a statement.
“These racist descriptions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and criticism of those descriptions would be irresponsible."
Protests have spread like wildfire across the US since the killing of African American George Floyd while in police custody(拘留), with calls growing for police reform and the broader removal of symbols of a racist legacy, including monuments to the slave-holding Confederacy.
Floyd died last month as a white Minneapolis officer pressed a knee into his neck for almost nine minutes. The officer has been charged with second- degree murder.
12 Years A Slave writer John Ridley said in a Los Angeles Times said Monday that Gone with the Wind must be removed as it “doesn't just fall short with regard to representation" but ignores the horrors of slavery and keeps “some of the most painful stereotypes(刻板印象) of people of color.”
The film will return to the recently launched streaming platform at a later date, along with a discussion of its historical background, the company said.
No edits will be made,“because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed."
“If we are to create a more just, equal and inclusive future, we must first acknowledge and understand our history.”

8 . On the banks of Tanzania’s Lake Eyasi lives the world’s last hunter-gatherer tribe (部落) — the Hadza. They don’t grow food, raise animals or build houses. Instead they live a life unchanged for more than ten thousand years.
Their world is one of complete freedom — something modern society can barely imagine and is unlikely to ever experience, let alone have the skills to stay alive. Text messages and phone calls don’t exist. Nor do cars and electricity. No jobs, timetables, and social structures. No laws, taxes and unbelievably, no money — the closest thing to currency (交易) is the trade for a pair of shorts with a neighboring tribe.
We spent our time with the Hadza hunting baboons (狒狒), a daily activity for the men. Their land is packed with sharp bushes, poisonous snakes and man-eating lions. But a successful hunting trip is the difference between eating or going hungry.
The Hadza diet consists mainly of honey, fruit and meat. Men often hunt in pairs to shoot animals with bows and arrows. The Hadza show us how to track animals, from baboons to snakes to lions. They are hugely skilled with their handmade bows and arrows — we have a go and barely get the arrow to go three feet in front of us.
The language of the Hadza is believed to be the oldest still-spoken language known to man. The Hadza don’t have conflict, and have no memory of starvation. Their population never reaches numbers that cannot be supported through hunting or gathering. They never get from their land more than they need.
Unlike modern-day office workers, the Hadza enjoy an extraordinary amount of free time. Their “work” — hunting for food — takes up around five hours of their day. They’ve been in such a state of peaceful existence for thousands of years.

9 . Americans: Restless? Illiterate(文盲)?
Americans are queer people; they can’t rest. They have more time, more leisure, shorter work hours, more holidays, and more vacations than any other people in the world. But they can’t rest. They rush up and down across their continent as tourists; they move about in great herds to conventions(大会); they search the wilderness; they flood the mountains; they keep the hotels full. But they can’t rest. The scenery rushes past them. They learn it, but they don’t see it. Battles and monuments are announced to them on a tour bus. They hear them, but they don’t get them. They never stop moving; they rush up and down as Shriners, Masons, Old Graduates, Bankers—they are a new thing each day, always rushing to a reunion or something. So they go on rushing about till eventually the undertaker(殡葬工)gather them to a last convention.
Americans are queer people; they can’t read. They have more schools, and better schools and spend more money on schools and colleges than all Europe. But they can’t read. They print more books in a year than the French print in ten. But they can’t read. They cover their country with one hundred thousand tons of Sunday newspapers every week. But they don’t read them. They’re too busy. They use them for fires and to make more paper with. They buy eagerly thousands of new novels at two dollars each. But they read only page one. Their streets are full of huge signs. They won’t look at them. Their streetcars are filled with advertising; they turn their eyes away. Transparent colors, cart wheels, and mechanical flares whirl and flicker in the crowded streets at night. No one sees them. Tons of letters pour into the mail boxes, through the houses, and down the garbage cans. No one reads them.
