文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章提供了举办可持续婚礼的一些建议。

1 . Today, interest in sustainable weddings is on the rise. And some of our decisions do not seem as unusual as they once might have. Here are some tips to help you plan a wedding that centers on using your garden and the things you grow in it.

A Sustainable location

Having a wedding outdoors means you don’t have to cope with energy costs or other concerns about a venue(场地).     1     The only thing out of your hand is the weather!

Flowers Arrangements

For many people, creating a romantic environment means having flowers. Even if you don’t have a wedding ceremony outdoors surrounded by living plants, you may wish to bring nature into your chosen wedding venue.     2     You have complete freedom to grow flowers you like in it.

Food and Drink

3    . Not only flowers but also food for the wedding can be grown. If not, a garden lover might prepare drinks or add homegrown elements to dishes to give the event a really personal touch.

Gifts

The added extras can be prepared by using things from your garden before the big day, ranging from sweets, cookies to soaps, baskets, or other thoughtful homemade presents.     4

Invitations

You might consider making personal and handmade invitations with natural inks, paints and even paper from plant fibers.     5     They won’t be thrown out after being read, but will serve some other functions. For example, pieces of wood cut from trees in your garden can serve as invitations as well as coasters (杯垫)after wedding.

A.Keen gardeners can go even further.
B.If you have a garden, you are already at an advantage.
C.The natural and beautiful setting of a hall can be a romantic spot.
D.You can also design your invitations that can be preserved for long.
E.Alternatively, you might send invitations that double as useful items.
F.This will make guests feel very welcome and a wedding a special occasion.
G.You’ll have more control over the event costs, in environmental and financial terms.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了大卫·阿滕伯勒爵士从小喜爱大堡礁,同时也致力于保护大堡礁。他很受尊敬和爱戴。

2 . He may be approaching his 90th birthday, but Sir David Attenborough has no desire to slow down. Fresh from an appearance at the Paris climate change summit, he fronts a new series David Attenborough’s Great Barrier Reef (大堡礁).

“There was a book by Saville-Kent called The Great Barrier Reef with fascinating hand-drawn illustrations which always fascinated me as a child. It was as if born from pure imagination. I thought no such place on earth can surely exist.” he said.

Nearly sixty years after his first visit, Attenborough dives 1000 feet below the surface off the Queensland coast to explore the world’s largest living organism like never before.

“It was the first place I was lucky enough to scuba (水肺) dive and I was, entering those waters, welcomed by magic. It was 1957 and I was shocked by remarkable beauty and life.”

The dive also gives Attenborough the chance to properly examine the effects of climate change and how the rising temperatures and acidity of the seas is causing harm to the reef.

“You can see where the sea grass is going and you know that if it continues on like that for the next decade or so, the coral (珊瑚) won’t be able to tolerate it. You can show experimentally that they’re incapable of living in these higher temperatures and the acidity will be such that they won’t be able to form coral limestone (灰岩) anymore,” he explains.

Attenborough admits that though he is incredibly enthusiastic about spreading awareness of climate change he was unwilling to be referred to as an authority on the subject. “I have a view, but it’s a second-hand view. I haven’t done the chemistry,” he said.

The truth is, he is well respected and beloved. When he talks about something as serious as climate change we are willing to pay attention.

B.The sea grass posted a potential threat to the coral.
C.The acidity sped up the formation of coral limestone.
D.Scientists were doing experiments under deep sea water.
3. Which of the following can best describe David Attenborough?

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是约翰霍普金斯大学彭博公共卫生学院的一项新研究发现,快餐上的标签会影响人们的选择。

4 . Raising livestock (牲畜) is a big part of the carbon emission from agriculture. But it is hard to change people’s habits and get them to give up their hamburgers, especially since more than one-third of Americans eat fast food every day. We previously called for carbon labels on everything from buildings to burgers. Now, a new study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that labels on fast food affected people’s choices.

The study said shifting current dietary patterns to more sustainable diets with less red meat could reduce food-related greenhouse gas emissions by 55% and have health benefits.

The 5,000 participants in the study were shown fake menus. One group got menus with high climate impact labels on red meat items and another had low climate impact labels on fish or plant-based burgers. Both menus were effective in reducing the orders for red meat. But interestingly, the high-impact labels were far more effective, with 23% of the participants choosing a more environmentally sustainable selection, while menus listing low-impact choices encouraged only 10% participants to change.

“We found that labeling red meat items with high-climate impact labels was more effective in increasing sustainable selections than labeling non-red meat items with low-climate impact labels,” wrote the authors of the study.

Lead author, Julia Wolfson, said, “These results suggest that menu labeling, particularly labels warning that an item has high climate impact, can be an effective strategy for encouraging more sustainable food choices in a fast food setting.”

The study points out negative labels might be unpopular: “It is unlikely that the industry would voluntarily adopt a negative label approach; such an approach needs to be carried out via law. However, high climate impact labels may easily be adopted in settings like universities and hospitals.”

They have a point that this label is aggressively negative, more like a cigarette warning than a food label. In the study, the authors note that future research should test more label designs using qualitative and quantitative research on how people understand different climate impact labels.

1. What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.The background of the new study.
B.The influence of the carbon emission.
C.The request of giving up carbon labels.
D.The difficulty in changing people’s habits.
2. How did the groups respond to the menus?
A.They liked them very much.
B.They stuck to their preferences.
C.Some of them stopped eating fast food.
D.Some of them changed their food choices.
3. What can we learn about carrying out the approach from the text?
A.It will be banned by law.B.It will produce bad results.
C.It will face some resistance.D.It will be accepted by all industries.
4. What does the author mainly want to convey in the text?
A.Fast food has a negative effect on climate.
B.Raising livestock surely causes carbon emission.
C.Researchers care too much about climate impact.
D.Labels on fast food can help protect the environment.

6 . For 60-year-old Gao Ruyi, the proudest achievement in his life is not measured in honors or riches but in the wings of over 1, 000 swans he has rescued. Gao, former director of the wildlife rescue station in Sanmenxia, Henan province, has guarded swans and the ecosystems they live in for almost four decades. His efforts have earned him the name “Swan Dad”.

Gao Ruyi grew up near the Yellow River, China’s second-longest river. He had little connection to swans until the winter of 1988 when one day the peacefulness of the riverside was broken by gunshots. Rushing to the scene, he found that someone had opened fire on the swans. The heart-wrenching cries of four wounded swans left a deep-rooted mark on him. Since then, Gao has become a guardian of swans and a witness to the swan protection efforts along the Yellow River.

The endeavor (努力) is not without its challenges.

Gao started working at a wildlife rescue station in the Yellow River wetland in Sanmenxia in 1994. Despite their efforts, illegal activities continued. One such tragedy happened in 1998. Several wild ducks and swans were poisoned. Gao immediately called the police and provided treatment for the feathery victims. “Swans have memories,” he said, “Since the incident, nobody saw swans in the area for many years.”

Still, Gao’s passion for swan protection has never waned. He and many other “swan dads” and “swan moms” often visited nearby villages to educate residents about wildlife conservation, and encouraged them to bring sick or injured wild animals to the rescue station.

Another challenge for the birds came from the environment. Swan populations in Sanmenxia were limited in the 1990s due to severe pollution caused by mining and industrial development, said Gao. In the past decades, however, China started extensive efforts to battle pollution in the Yellow River basin, and gradually, swan populations in the Sanmenxia section began to increase. Tens of thousands of swans are flying back home, marking the start of “swan season”, as the locals affectionately call it.

1. Which of the following can best describe Gao Ruyi?
A.Peace-loving.B.Good-tempered.C.Hard-working.D.Kind-hearted.
2. What did Gao Ruyi do to meet the challenges?
A.He started a wildlife rescue station.
B.He educated people to raise awareness.
C.He cured sick or injured wild swans.
D.He worked with government to fight pollution.
3. What does the underlined word “waned” most probably mean?
A.Recovered.B.Expanded.C.Benefited.D.Declined.
4. What is the best title for this text?
A.Yellow River Birds Saved by “Swan Dad”
B.Illegal Activities Done to Swans Continue
C.Yellow River Pollution Problems Solved by Government
D.“Swan Season” Is Witnessed in Sanmenxia Section of Yellow River

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了Ocean Sole公司如何收集和转化人字拖,以及这样做对环境和当地社区的影响。

7 . “Strange and yet very real, thousands and thousands of flip-flops (人字拖) are washed up onto the East African coast, creating an environmental disaster. Not only do they destroy the natural beauty of our beaches and oceans, but they also block baby turtles’ way back to the sea and are eaten by fish and other animals,” states Ocean Sole.

The company collects the flip-flops — including paying people who bring in what they’ve collected— and transforms (改造) them into art while providing working opportunities for local people. At Ocean Sole’s workshop, 40 Kenyans are now employed full-time. The company pays their medical bills and provides free lunches to workers. “I was not able to afford shoes and had to borrow some to come to Nairobi to find work. Having been working here for six years, I can now afford to send my two children to school,” says Eric Mwandola, an artist with Ocean Sole.

Not only has the company grown in size, but so has the reach of its message. Ocean Sole now has products displayed in the gift shops of more than 40 zoos and museums. With each piece sold, the message about plastic pollution finds its way to a broader audience. “We are continuing to call on organizations to offer environmentally friendly souvenirs (纪念品) rather than plastic decorations,” says Ocean Sole. The company is all about cleaning up pollution, and that further develops their zero-waste guidelines. The waste from the sculptures (雕塑) is collected and used as flooring for kids’ playgrounds, and they even collect rainwater to use in their production. Other materials needed for the sculptures are also recycled goods, and the packaging comes in different sizes for products of various shapes and sizes.

In 2013 alone, Ocean Sole transformed around 50 tons of flip-flops into artworks. The company’s goal is to recycle 400,000 flip-flops per year.

A.To show the happiness of local residents.
B.To stress the importance of having a job.
C.To explain the social benefits brought by Ocean Sole.
D.To describe the possible value of unwanted flip-flops.
3. How can a broader audience receive Ocean Sole’s message?
A.By buying their art products.B.By working in their gift shops.
C.By visiting polluted beaches.D.By offering green souvenirs.
4. Which of the following ignores Ocean Sole’s production guidelines?
A.Making rules to manage the wastewater.
B.Using one-size-fits-all boxes for the sculptures.
C.Reusing leftover materials for similar products.
D.Repurposing waste products as useful tools for other processes.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。主要介绍的是英国出现了污水危机,自来水公司向河流和海洋排放了太多的污水,为此,四分之一的游泳者可能不会在海里游泳。

9 . Almost a quarter of the UK’s sea swimmers may not swim in the ocean this year because of sewage (污水) dumping by water companies, according to a poll (民意调查). Sewage was dumped into waters near England’s most celebrated beaches for nearly 8,500 hours last year. And there were 1,504 discharges (排出) in 2022 on beaches supposed to be free from such pollution.

The poll spoke to 2,272 UK adults between 21 and 23 on July. Just over 30% said they typically went sea swimming during the summer, and of these 23% said they would not this year because of sewage dumping by water companies. More than two in five of the regular beachgoers also said they were less likely to visit the British seaside this summer because of sewage discharges.

The Department for Environment says government should allow the Environment Agency to charge unlimited fines on rule-breaking water companies. Fines are currently capped (上限) at £250,000. The Department for Environment has been calling for a sewage tax on annual profits and a ban on bonuses of water company managers. “Coastal communities are at the mercy of water companies who unapologetically discharge raw sewage into popular swimming spots,” Tim Farron, the Department for Environment’s spokesperson said. “The government needs to stop letting water companies off the hook and finally ban these terrible sewage discharges and defend our tourism sector.”

A Water UK spokesperson said standards at beaches had greatly improved since the 1990s but that the industry recognized it had been slow to deal with the harm to our seas caused by sewage overflows. “Over the next seven years, water and sewerage companies plan to spend £10bn—doubling current levels of investment—on sewage treatment,” they said. “As part of this, bathing waters will be among the first to receive funding.”

1. What does the poll show?
A.Water companies dumped the most sewage into waters last year.
B.Many swimmers avoid the water over fears of sewage on UK beaches.
C.Waters near England’s most celebrated beaches are not seriously polluted.
D.Over two fifths of the regular beachgoers in UK are between 21 and 23.
2. What suggestion does the Department for Environment make to the government?
A.Reducing bonuses of water company managers.
B.Shutting down those rule-breaking water companies.
C.Fining rule-breaking water companies at least £250,000.
D.Introducing a sewage tax on water companies’ yearly profits.
3. What does the underlined part “off the hook” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Develop slowly.B.Improve too fast.
C.Free of responsibility.D.Attract public attention.
4. In which section of the website can you probably read the text?

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了日益严重的电子垃圾现象。电子垃圾日益增多,如果处理不当,会对土壤,地下水,空气都产生危害。

10 . Drive through any suburb in the U.S. today, and it’s hard to miss the recycling bins that have become companions to America’s trash cans. Recycling has become common, as people recognize the need to care for the environment. Yet most people’s recycling consciousness extends only as far as paper, bottle, and cans. People seldom find themselves facing the growing problem of e-waste.

E-waste rapidly increases as the techno-fashionable frequently upgrade to the most advanced devices, and the majority of them end up in landfills. Some people who track such wastes say that users throw away nearly 2 million tons of TVs, VCRs, computers, cell phones, and other electronics every year. Unless we can find a safe replacement, this e-waste may get into the ground and poison the water with dangerous toxins (毒素), such as lead, mercury, and arsenic. Burning the waste also dangerously contaminates the air.

However, e-waste often contains reusable silver, gold, and other electrical materials. Recycling these materials reduces environmental problems by reducing both landfill waste and the need to look for such metals, which can destroy ecosystems.

A growing number of states nave adopted laws to ban dumping e-waste. Still, less than a quarter of this waste will reach lawful recycling programs. Some companies advertising safe disposal (处理) in fact merely ship the waste to some developing countries, where it still ends up in landfills. These organizations prevent progress by unsafely disposing of waste in an out-of-sight, out-of-mind location.

However, the small but growing number of cities and corporations that do handle e-waste responsibly represents progress toward making the world a cleaner, better place for us all.

1. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A.E-waste cannot be put into trash cans in the U.S.
B.Most Americans have realized the dangers of e-waste.
C.Many Americans now have access to recycling bins.
D.Most of America’s trash cans are made of recycled material.
2. Which can best replace the underlined word “contaminates” in Paragraph 2?
A.Pollutes.B.Heats.C.Absorbs.D.Reduces.
3. Which statement is right according to the article?
A.The e-waste buried in the landfills won’t destroy ecosystem.
B.More and more states have banned dumping e-waste by making laws.
C.Much e-waste has been handled properly.
D.Some developing countries welcome e-waste.
4. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A.To tell us how to recycle e-waste.
B.To talk about the future of e-waste.
C.To encourage us to deal with e-waste properly.
D.To discuss if it’s necessary to recycle e-waste.
