1 . Choosing what to wear can be a tricky problem, especially if you’re a fashion victim. Trying to keep up with the latest styles involves regular visits to the shops and sometimes wasting money on expensive designer clothes. But when the fashion changes, these clothes are forgotten in the back of cupboards gathering dust, or just get thrown away.
There are many stores that now offer cheap “fast fashion”—low-price items that imitate the styles of more expensive designer brands. Environmentalists are angered by the amount of energy involved in making these clothes and that many of them are made from non-recyclable materials. This means that items go into landfill or are just incinerated, which is responsible for 20% of the world’s waste water, and 10% of carbon emissions.
This is something the fashion industry is becoming more aware of and has led to a new crop of biomaterials that replace wasteful textiles like cotton and leather. Examples include Piñatex, a leather-like substance made from deserted pineapple leaves. It’s been used in collections by Hugo Boss and H&M. And there’s mycelium, the root structure of mushroom that’s being used to create food, packaging and textiles.
Cotton is a very resource-intense crop to grow. Eleanor Lawrie says “about 15,000 liters of water are required to make one pair of jeans.” So, buying organic cotton is a better choice. And there is also Tencel, also known as Lyocell, a natural product that’s now growing in popularity.
“But creating sustainable textiles is only part of the battle. Buying second hand and buying fewer clothes are the obvious environmentally friendly choices.” said Dr. Richard from Leeds School of Design “I don’t think you should consider buying any item of clothing unless you commit to 30 years.”

4 . To cut greenhouse gas emissions, we need to increase cyclist numbers and that means getting more women on their bikes.
Transportation accounts for up to onethird of greenhouse gas emissions from the world's biggest cities. And traffic is the largest source of air pollution. To create healthy and liveable cities, we need to increase the number of cyclists on our streets.
Surveys show that potential cyclists of women are stopped by similar concerns, including aggressive and speeding drivers, the threat posed by large vehicles such as lorries and buses, and bike theft.
Also, people do what they think to be possible. Research in San Francisco found that women, especially women of colour, felt that “people like me” do not cycle. Similarly, 49% of people in London say they do not feel cycling is for “people like them”.
Here is the truth.
A.Women enjoy practising cycling. |
B.What kind of survey is available? |
C.It means getting more women on their bikes. |
D.So what can cities do to get more women cycling? |
E.A few simple changes can help benefit public health. |
F.However, women regard safe cycle roads and parking as more urgent. |
G.So we should hold events to let more people feel that cycling is for everyone. |
5 . Conservation requires the reasonable use of all Earth's natural resources. People who are concerned about conservation try their best to protect natural resources.
Some resources are renewable.
Some resources are nonrenewable, which means they cannot be replaced. Fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, are examples of nonrenewable resources. People can conserve nonrenewable resources by using them carefully.
Money is another reason why conservation can be a challenge. For example, a timber (木材) company might be able to protect forest animals by limiting the number of trees it cuts.
Everyone can contribute to conservation in one way or another. People can recycle paper, glass, and other materials.
A.Industries can limit the amount of pollution they create. |
B.They also try to keep the environment clean and healthy. |
C.But it might not be willing to do so because it will make less profit. |
D.Recycling saves resources by reusing materials that would be thrown away. |
E.They can also look for other alternative resources that serve the same purpose. |
F.Conservation can be hard because it can require people to give up some conveniences. |
G.Living things, such as plants and animals are such examples because they can reproduce themselves. |

8 . A young Dutch inventor is widening his effort to cleanup floating (浮动的) plastic from the Pacific Ocean. He has developed a floating device (设备) to trap plastic waste moving into rivers before it reaches the oceans.
Boyan Slat was just 18 years old when he invented a system for catching waste in the ocean. He also founded an environmental group called “The Ocean Cleanup”. Its purpose is to develop the system. Last year, Slat showed the next step: a floating device which is called Interceptor. It removes plastic out of rivers. The device is powered by energy from the sun. “The 1,000 rivers are responsible for about 80% of plastic going into the world’s oceans,” said Slat. Three of the machines have already been used. Each machine costs about $775, 660, but the cost might drop as production increases.
Since they were used, the machines have been doing very well, collecting the plastic bottles and all the rubbish in the rivers. According to Slat, it is necessary to close “the tap”, which means preventing more plastic from reaching the ocean in the first place. He wanted to clean them all in the next five years. “This is not going to be easy, but if we do get this done, we could truly make our oceans again, ”said Slat.
The device is designed to be safe in rivers. Its nose is shaped to change directions to keep it away from larger floating things. It works by guiding plastic waste into an opening in the front of the device. The waste is then carried inside the machine where it is dropped into containers. The devices ends a text message to local operators that can come and empty it when it is full.
1. What do we know about Interceptor?A.It needs solar power to work. | B.It is mainly used in the oceans. |
C.It is being under test. | D.It can help sort waste. |
A.The waste. | B.The oceans. |
C.The machines. | D.The rivers. |
A.To ensure the device’s safety. | B.To send operators text messages. |
