2 . It should be one of the main goals in today’s society to reduce plastic consumption. Though many believe recycling will solve the problem, and continue using plastic, it’s actually the opposite. In 2013, 254 million tonnes of trash was produced in the U.S. alone, and only around 30% was recycled. This means the rest ended up in a landfill and will stay there for up to 1000 years.

Now Asian countries, including Vietnam and Thailand, are looking for new ideas to avoid plastic. One of those ideas was a new, eco-friendly way to pack their goods by avoiding plastic packaging. One of Perfect Homes Chiangmai’s team members noticed a creative way to reduce plastic that a supermarket called Rimping Supermarket was using. Little did he know that people all around the world would absolutely love this idea. “I just entered to get a few items while we were waiting to sign some contracts with our lawyer, who was delayed. When I noticed the vegetables wrapped in banana leaves and simply liked the idea. So I took a few pictures and posted them online,” he said.

With more than 3.5 million views and over 17 thousand shares, the idea became something people can encourage more supermarkets to implement (实施).

Some have noticed that not everything on the shelves is completely plastic-free to which the supermarket responded that they are taking one step at a time, but it’s not that easy. Many products come to the supermarkets pre-packaged and many companies are interested in wrapping their produce in plastic since it is the cheapest and the easiest option.

It’s now up to the shoppers to show the supermarket which they prefer. If everyone opts for the banana leaf packaging, they will probably stop stocking the items in plastic.

1. What can we infer about recycling from Paragraph 1?
A.The author thinks highly of recycling.
B.The US did a great job in recycling in 2013.
C.Recycling has failed to solve the plastic problem.
D.Recycling helps a lot in reducing plastic consumption.
2. Why did the man go to Rimping Supermarket?
A.To buy some items.B.To look for new ideas there.
C.To take photos of their shelves.D.To sign a contract with a lawyer.
3. What does the underlined phrase “opts for” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Doubts.B.Increases.C.DislikesD.Chooses.
4. What is the best title of the text?
A.Leaf Packaging Spreads Rapidly
B.Reducing Plastic Consumption
C.Recycling Avoids Plastic Packaging
D.A Good Option Makes A Difference

3 . A team of scientists has come up with a plan to help rebuild the Arctic (北极) ice cap.

Usually, the sea ice gets thicker and spreads further each winter, but this hasn't happened for the past few years.

Last month, the ice cap had reached its smallest size since scientists began keeping a record of it 38 years ago. The weather in the Arctic has been unusually warm this winter. Some days, temperatures have been 20 degrees Celsius higher than before at this time of year. With less ice, the Arctic would warm up even more quickly, and more ice would melt (融化). Without sea ice, many animals would lose their natural homes.

Dr Steven Desch and a group of scientists from Arizona State University in the United States think they can help to build up Arctic sea ice again. They want to fix wind-powered pumps (抽水机) on the sea ice. During the winter, the pumps would spread water from the ocean over the surface of the ice where it would freeze and form a new layer of ice. The scientists say that in 10 years, this could add a metre of ice to the ice cap.(The                    Arctic ice cap is about two to three metres thick right now.)

The plan would require about 10 million pumps and it would be very expensive—about $655 billion. Some other scientists are wondering if the pumps would actually work in cold Arctic conditions. They are also worried about how the project might affect the environment.

Dr Desch and his team hoped their plan would get more people interested in looking for a solution to the problem of melting sea ice. He said the only plan people have right now is to try to cut greenhouse gas emissions (温室气体排放) from cars and other man-made sources. He and his team don't think that will be enough to save the sea ice, but hope it will get everyone moving in the right direction.

1. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A.The changes of Arctic weather.
B.The history of the Arctic ice cap.
C.The influence of the weather on the Arctic.
D.The importance of sea ice to Arctic animals.
2. How will the scientists’ plan help the Arctic?
A.By thickening the Arctic ice.
B.By cutting pollution in the Arctic.
C.By pumping sea water to the land.
D.By making the Arctic attractive to wildlife.
3. What is the attitude of scientists mentioned in Paragraph 5 to the plan?
A.Hopeful.B.Doubtful.
C.Uncaring.D.Surprised.
4. What do Dr Desch and his team think of their plan?
A.It will surely work.
B.It needs discussing.
C.It is better than the present method.
D.It will encourage others to take steps.

4 . Humankind has tried to improve its standard of living since the very beginning of civilization. Back then, as well as today, providing food and security was the basic task for a person. However, nowadays the range of required goods has expanded greatly. People feel the need for not only some primary things, such as a piece of bread and a roof over their heads, but also for various facilities and luxuries(奢侈品). Providing humanity with these things is connected to the use of natural resources, which requires energy. The problem is that the common sources of energy we use today cause pollution, so economic growth is almost unavoidably associated with environmental damage.

There are certain aspects of economic growth which affect the environment. One of these is the fact that in order to produce more goods and products, the construction of large industrial plants is required. These plants produce a lot of waste, leading to the pollution of water and the atmosphere, which may cause negative long term health effects to nearby populations of animals, or people.

Industrial manufacturing leads to the constantly increasing energy consumption. The traditional energy sources, which are commonly used nowadays, are considered to be the greatest polluters to the environment. There also exist socalled ecofriendly sources of energy. They are sometimes preferred but replacing the traditional sources with them also requires time, during which people have to make some sacrifices(牺牲)to support these undertakings. What’s more, to produce economically practical energy, people unavoidably have to transform the natural site. This is expensive and, has harmful effects on the environment. For example, application of wind energy would block air flows’ natural speed, which is the reason for their decrease in strength after crossing the windmill. Consequently, the pressure balance that is brought about by this current will be affected, and it is important to remember that the environment and weather conditions are directly affected by atmospheric pressure.

For these reasons, bringing about economic growth without any resulting environmental damage, whatsoever, is impossible.

How Big is the Ecological Footprint of Your Food?

There is no doubt that eating less meat is good for our planet. However, if you are not ready to give up meat entirely, how to make a more     1     choice? Or have you ever thought about where the fish in your soup comes from? Or have you ever wondered how to reduce environmental impact of your meals?

‘We are what we eat!’ confirms the important notion that food and human are     2    . Food is culture, a sense of identity and a personal preference. But globally, our food system accounts for     3     a quarter of manmade greenhouse gas emissions. That’s why we should rethink our food consumption and include “the good food for the planet Earth” into our next recipe!

An expert from WWF Sweden (瑞典世界自然基金会) discussed the role of WWF at one meeting about future food. WWF Sweden aims to     4     production and consumption of food to increase sustainability. There are three interesting tools     5     by WWF Sweden that can help you to make the right choice on food consumption.

“Our Planet Plate” is a campaign with which WWF Sweden hopes to raise climate change     6     about food consumption. Aiming to address the goal of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, WWF provides information on how much greenhouse gases a meal should release to achieve the goal.

WWF Food Calculator is a tool that gives you an idea of how much greenhouse gas emissions your breakfast, lunch or dinner leads to. This tool can     7     how much carbon dioxide is released from the ingredients you use to cook. If you want to reach the goal of 1.5 degrees emission reduction, you are looking at having approximately 11 kg of CO2 equivalent food per week. You do not have to be     8     to reach this goal, but you have to be creative with your recipes. For instance, you could choose free-range meat or opt for local fish over mass-produced meat or     9     fish.

Initiated by SLU, a ‘Meat-Guide’ has been taken up and expanded by WWF Sweden since 2015. The Meat-Guide bases on five     10     of climate, biodiversity, chemical pesticides, animal welfare and antibiotics. You can download the Meat-Guide app onto your phone and use it the next time you do your groceries.

6 . Let's take a minute to think about the water we use. The human body is 60% water and we need to drink lots of water to be healthy. When we are thirsty we just go to the kitchen and fill a glass with clean water.

1    For example, farmers, who produce the food we eat, use water to make the plants grow. When we turn on a light or switch on a TV or a computer we use energy and we need water to produce this energy.

The truth is that we are lucky enough to have clean water whenever we want, but this is not the case for many people around the world.    2    That's around one in 10 people in the world. If we drink dirty water,we can catch diseases from the bacteria and become ill. Every year over 500,000 children die from diarrhea(腹泻)from dirty water. That's around 1,400 children every day! Also,in some countries children walk many kilometres every day to get water.    3    Therefore,they don't have time to learn how to read or write and don't get an education.

4    On this day every year, countries around the world hold events to educate people about the problems of dirty water and that clean water is something that everyone should have around the world. At one school in the UK,children between the ages of 10 and 15 walk 6km with six litres of water.    5    People give them money to do this and all the money helps get clean water to as many people as possible around the world.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章讲述了电影制作人Rob Stewart为保护环境所作出的努力以及他对年轻人的影响。

9 . When he was 22, Rob Stewart traveled the world for four years. He wanted to call attention to the mistreatment of sharks. His 2007 film, Sharkwater, documents the cruel practice of removing sharks’ fins (鳍) for money and leaving the animals to die. In his latest documentary, Revolution, Stewart takes on an even bigger challenge: climate change.

The Canadian filmmaker says that climate change has harmed people and places everywhere: “It is stronger than any government or organization. If we educate people, they will make better decisions about protecting natural resources.”

According to a recent report on climate change, “The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have reduced, and sea levels have risen.” These developments are endangering crops, wildlife, fish, and even people.

Stewart says that the consequences of climate change will be irreversible unless people take action, especially young people. “It’s up to kids to be the moral compass (道德指南) of society,” he believes, “and say, ‘Guys, this is not right.’”

Many kids took action after seeing Sharkwater. Elementary school students in the Northern Mariana Islands, for example, got their local government to ban the sale of shark fins.

Felix Finkbeiner, 17, of Germany, is also part of the “revolution” to save the planet. In 2007, Felix started a youth group called Plant-for-the-Planet, whose motto is “Stop Talking. Start Planting.” The group raises money to plant trees. So far, Plant-for-the-Planet has planted nearly 200 trees around the world. “Future generations are the ones who will be suffering the most from inaction (无作为),” Felix says. His goal is to plant millions of additional trees.

10 . Although the idea of “zero emission, net carbon-positive, sustainable (可持续)” development was promoted worldwide, most cities are at a loss what to do or even some have objected to it. But in Liuzhou, a city in southern China, attitudes could not be more different.

The Liuzhou Municipality Urban Planning Bureau has signed up Italian architect Stefano Boeri, the father of the forest city movement, to build a self-contained community for up to 30,000 people. He is the go-to man for such projects thanks to the success of his “vertical forests”, two residential (住宅的) towers. Completed in 2014, they remove up to 17.5 tons of soot (煤烟) from the air each year, and a year later one of them was named Best Tall Building Worldwide.

The Liuzhou project is a much more ambitious undertaking, however. Its homes, hospitals, hotels, schools and offices will be built on a 340-acre site in what Boeri calls the first attempt to create an “urban environment that is really trying to find a balance with nature”. Its 100 species of plant life are expected to absorb almost 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide and 57 tons of pollutants per year, while at the same time producing 900 tons of life-giving oxygen.

Although the architects haven’t published the cost of the forest city, the Milan towers cost only five percent more than traditional skyscrapers.

The construction of his forest city at Liuzhou is set to begin in 2020, and there is still a great deal of planning and research required before a projected completion date can be set. However, Boeri remains optimistic about the project and has confidence in the soundness of his vision: “I really think that bringing forests into the city is a way to deal with global warming.”

1. What’s Liuzhou’s attitude towards the sustainable development?
A.Approving.B.Cautious.C.Unfavorable.D.Doubtful.
2. Why is Stefano employed for the Liu Zhou project?
A.He volunteered to do the project.
B.He is a famous architect in the world.
C.He is the father of the forest recovery.
D.He has gained experience in similar projects.
3. What does the underlined word “they” refer to?
A.The architects.B.The two towers.
C.Forests in the city.D.The residents of the city.
4. What’s the purpose of Liu Zhou project?
A.To provide more jobs.B.To bring forest into city.
C.To solve house shortage.D.To improve the environment.
