3 . Plastic waste is choking our planet. People are trying to help fix it by recycling, but their efforts aren’t going far enough. Even when plastic producers are held responsible and attempt to solve the problem, it doesn’t always go smoothly. Such has been the case for the company Torus Pak, which produces novel packaging for frozen meals on a large scale.

Like many other black plastic products, the Torus Pak packages used a carbon-based pigment (颜料). This pigment troubles the sorting technology which is used by many recycling facilities, so black plastic usually ends up being thrown away because the machines can’t identify it. Now the company is midway through the complex process of phasing out that pigment and switching that pigment to one that doesn’t use carbon.

But that doesn’t mean the problem is solved, for the recycling rate at the waste facility itself is not encouraging. Your discarded plastic may end up in a landfill even if you send it to be recycled. Worldwide, only about nine percent of all the plastic waste has been recycled, which amounts to less than 600 million tons out of over 6 billion. While one might assume the proportion of plastic being recycled is on the increase due to improved tech and increased public awareness of environmental protection, it’s actually become even lower in many places in recent years.

“The world wasn’t always flooded with single-use plastic products,” said Lisa Ramsden, senior plastic campaigner for Greenpeace USA. “We know how to live without them. We’ve just got used to a convenience culture that relies so heavily on them.”

The solution is obvious. To get out of this habit, we should stop using so much plastic, starting with many of the items we use just once for a few minutes. Companies need to shift toward using more refillable and reusable containers, and packaging made from materials that are less harmful to the environment. Governments must mandate (强制执行) such changes — a goal we’re now finally inching closer to every day.

1. What is the problem with the Torus Pak packages?
A.They are expensive for customers.
B.Their pigment is hardly appealing.
C.They are hard to define as “recyclable”.
D.Their production process is very complex.
2. What does the author mainly stress in paragraph 3?
A.The reason for recycling plastic waste.
B.The outcome of recycling plastic waste.
C.The potential of recycling plastic waste.
D.The objective of recycling plastic waste.
3. What is advised to solve the plastic pollution in the text?
A.Making some stricter laws.
B.Reducing the use of plastic products.
C.Advancing the technology of recycling.
D.Setting some higher environmental goals.
4. Which can be the best title for the text?
A.Recycling fails to solve plastic pollution
B.A company contributes a lot to recycling

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了作为煤炭和清洁能源的桥梁能源——天然气,会产生温室效应,这使人们担忧。

5 . Natural gas produces half as much CO2 when burned as coal, but that doesn't make it harmless. Climate scientists say that rising production of natural gas is becoming one of the biggest driving forces of climate change and that plans for industry expansion could stop efforts to make the Earth’s climate steady. The U. S. energy industry plans to spend hundreds of billions of dollars building pipelines and receiving stations in coming years to increase exports of natural gas in supercooled liquefied form, known as LNG(液化天然气).

Climate scientists are concerned about another greenhouse gas that leaks(泄漏) into the atmosphere during natural gas production: methane. Methane has a warming effect up to 80 or 90 times more powerful than CO2 over a 20-year timescale. Many companies say they have been doing more to find and fix methane leaks.

What about gas as a temporary “bridge fuel” to a cleaner future? The industry often describes natural gas as a vital “bridge” to help change from relying on coal-fired power to cleaner sources of energy. Advocates of natural gas argue that gas-fired power plants can provide continuous electricity, backing up wind and solar operations. Climate scientists are increasingly concerned, however, that plans to expand the industry a lot mean that using natural gas as a “bridge” could end up locking the world into a high-carbon and fast-warming future.

1. What does burning natural gas result in compared with burning coal?
A.Producing more greenhouses.B.Making air much dirtier.
C.Providing less electricity.D.Giving off 1/2 CO2
2. What does the U. S. energy industry plan to do?
A.Expand exports of LNG.
B.Find and fix methane leaks.
C.Make the Earth’s climate steady.
D.Build pipelines and oil stations.
3. We can know from the text that ________.
A.burning natural gas does no harm to the climate
B.natural gas is a vital “bridge” to help rely on coal-burned power
C.the natural gas production is the smallest driving force of climate change
D.methane is a more powerful greenhouse gas than CO2 in a warming effect
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Efforts to avoid climate disaster.
B.Worries about a warming future.
C.Plans for expanding gas industry.
D.Ways to produce cleaner natural gas.

6 . There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic trash in the world’s oceans, and each year, 8 million tons of plastic are added to the figure. Though the oceans seem vast enough to stomach a lot of plastic, the level of waste is starting to reach a crisis point: According to a new report by the Ocean Conservancy, by 2025, the ocean could contain one ton of plastic for every three tons of fish.

All these floating bits of plastic not only disrupt marine ecosystems, but also poison the global supply of seafood. “It’s reaching crisis proportions,” says Andreas Merkl, CEO of the Ocean Conservancy. “Plastic breaks down into small pieces that look like plankton (浮游生物) and is eaten by everything from plankton to whales.”

The new report calls for a focus on improving waste management systems in a handful of developing countries that account for the plastic leakage into the ocean. China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam contribute more than half of the oceans’ plastic since their waste facilities haven’t kept up with rapid industrialization.

How can countries reduce the leakage of waste into the ocean? The Ocean Conservancy report suggests that by providing more waste collection services, closing the leakage points within the collection system, getting rid of waste with effective landfill, and building more recycling facilities, the plastics leakage could be cut by 50% by 2020.

It’s not just an environmentalist’s daydream. Coca-Cola and Dow Chemical, along with some other multinational companies, have joined forces with Ocean Conservancy to fight ocean pollution. “We’re committed to working toward a future of a plastic-free ocean. Companies don’t make plastic with the intention of it ending up in the ocean, and we acknowledge the strong role industry must play in order to help eliminate ocean plastic waste by 2035.” Says a Dow Chemical director.

“While building landfills and incinerators (焚化炉) across these developing countries might not be pretty, it’s far more environmentally friendly than letting waste slide into the world’s oceans.” Says Andreas Merkl.

1. According to the passage, plastic poisons sea food because_________.
A.It damages marine ecosystems
B.It breaks down into small bits that can be eaten by fish
C.When sea animals are trapped in plastic bags, they can't breathe
D.It contains poison pills
2. Five developing countries account for the problem because__________.
A.They produce the majority of the waste worldwide
B.There are too many multinational companies in those countries
C.They have inadequate waste facilities to adapt to rapid industrialization
D.Their governments neglect their responsibility to inspect the problem
3. Andreas.Merkl emphasized the important role of_________in dealing with ocean plastic pollution in developing countries.
A.multinational companiesB.individuals all over the world
C.recycling of wasteD.building landfills and incinerators
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.The consequence of plastic trash and the effort made by the developing countries.
B.Plastic trash poison the global supply of seafood.
C.Landfills and incinerators are beneficial to the developing countries.
D.A new report by the ocean Conservancy.
