1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Today was Sunday, so I was in no hurry to get out of bed. As I rolled over and stretched, I heard my father shouted, “Oh, dear, fire!” There was unmistakable urgency in his voice. Upon hearing that, I got up and hurried downstairs. And my mother who was preparing breakfast also stopped cooking immediately. My father showed us a video shot by some witness, where we saw a fire inside a building. My mother stood beside him and shook her head.

“What a pity! Is it local?” my mother asked. As a policeman, my father had a keen observation ability. “It’s your hospital!” he watched the screen carefully and said in surprise.

It turned out that a building of the hospital where my mother worked as a head nurse was on fire. We found out later that an old wire first caused the building to catch fire and it began to spread. The camera captured the firefighters’ figures in black and orange uniform as they aimed endless streams of water at the fire.

“I have to get there,” said my mother, feeling anxious. My father and I offered to go with her. She threw on uniform and drove to the site.

Luckily, the fire didn’t spread to the building where my mother worked. After making sure that it was safe, we came to my mother’s office. My mother’s co-workers came to the office off and on as well. They were horrified at the sight of the next building but still thought about how to help.

Through a front window, I suddenly saw the rows of medical records in the next building, and I hurried to tell my mother. She felt really nervous and instantly consulted with her co-workers about how to cope. The situation was very urgent. They knew that if they waited until the firefighters who were busy evacuating (疏散) patients got here, those recordings might burn up. The fire broke out before the records, which were irreplaceable histories of their patients, could be entered into the computer.

David and Susan lived with their parents about a mile from town, but they went there to school every day. It was a pleasant walk down the lane, and through the grassland by the pond. No one knows exactly whether they liked it better in spring or in winter. They used to pretend that they were travelers exploring a new country with lush vegetation (茂盛的草木) and bright yellow daffodils (水仙花) dotting the field, and would drop leaves on the road that they might find their way back again. Everything seemed amazing and appealing. When the ice was thick and firm, they went across the pond. But their mother did not like to have them do this unless someone was with them.

“Don’t go across the pond today, children,” she said, as she kissed them and bade them goodbye one morning. “It is beginning to melt It can be dangerous.”

“All right, mother,” said David, though not very good-naturedly, for he was very fond of running and sliding on the ice. When they came to the pond, the ice looked hard and safe. There said he to his sister, “I knew it hadn’t melted any. Mother is always afraid we shall be drowned. Come along, and we will have a good time sliding. The school bell will not ring for an hour at least.”

“But you promised mother,” said Susan. “No, I didn’t. I only said ‘All right,’ and it is all right,” said David, holding his head high. “Oh, well, I didn’t say anything; so I can do as I like,” said Susan. So they stepped on the ice without any delay, and started to go across the pond merrily. They had not gone far before the ice gave way, and they fell into the chilly water all at once.

“Help! Help!” they both cried for help in panic.

Most of the fire accidents happen because of our carelessness. Every year there are many fire accidents, resulting in a great loss of property and life. Many of these can be easily avoided if we are more careful and observe certain rules regarding fire-protection. There have been some unforgettable accidents in my life. One has left me a shocking impression.

It was 9 am on Sunday. I was busy in doing my homework at home and my mother was preparing tea for me in the kitchen when suddenly there were shouts, cries and a lot of confusing noise coming from outside. Immediately, I rushed out to figure out what was all that. I was informed that a supermarket warehouse (仓库) in our neighborhood had caught fire.

Wanting to help put out the fire, I ran to the place. A big crowd of neighbors had collected as well. Some were helping throw water and some were trying to beat the fire with sticks. Although all the people struggled to help, before long, the fire, driven by the strong winds, swallowed the whole building. Before the owner, the employers and all the neighbors could to anything more, huge and high columns of smoke and flames spread fast. Seeing things were almost out of control, someone called firefighters at once. With all the belongings inside burning in the fire, the owner could do nothing except cry, helpless and heartbroken.

It was a horrible scene which I could never forget. Without powerful equipment, we could just wait for firefighters’ coming.

During the waiting for fire rescue, many began talking about how the fire broke out and who was to blame for the accident. Were the members of the supermarket themselves or the others responsible for the accident? When people continued chatting about the possible causes of the fire, the fire-engines soon arrived at the scene.

Night terror

In the middle of the night, as most of the residents slept, much of a 12-story Florida building collapsed, killing lots of people and sending survivors escaping for their lives. In this darkest time, however, the warmth and sparkles of humanity stood out.

Alfredo Lopez and his wife, Marian, were asleep when the first thundering explosion made them awake at 1:14 am on Thursday, June 24. Moments later, a second boom, much louder than the first, shook the bed in their apartment on the fifth floor.

Alfredo rushed to waken his 20-year-old son, Michael, urging him to get dressed, before running to the balcony window. The swirling (旋动) dust and ash made it difficult to see only a few feet in any direction. “All I could see was just white dust, very thick. I could barely see the balcony,” he recalled. The lights cut out and the emergency alarm came on, warning the residents of the Champlain Towers South to move out. They rushed out and ran downstairs, as they realized before the world knew of the disaster, they were fighting to survive by themselves.

On the same fifth floor, in unit 111, a two-bedroom oceanfront apartment, Gabriel Nir, 7 years old and his 5-year-old sister, Chani, all heard the first thunderous noise. Their parents were out of town for some business, leaving their grandma, Garfinkel, who was asleep, to look after them. They panicked and confused, and after a while, they began to realize what had happened and try to make their grandma wake up. Together they walked to the door, only to find it jammed in the twisted doorframe. All measures taken, they had no choice but to shout, “Help! Help! The door won’t open.”, wishing people outside would hear and come to help.

After sixteen years of waiting, Brian finally got his driver’s license. Just about two months after receiving his license, Brian asked if he could take the family car and spend a day at the state fair with a friend. His parents agreed happily and wished him a pleasant trip. So with that, Brian pulled out of the driveway and waved goodbye to his parents.

Colin didn’t live far—maybe ten or fifteen minutes away. And it wasn’t long before both boys were on their way downtown to the fair. Their drive was on a winding two-lane road with a few small hills. They followed the road to the left, slowly curved back to the right, and then proceeded up toward the crest of a hill. All of a sudden, there was a crash. It all happened so fast.

“Are you OK?” Brian asked his buddy.

“I think so. What just happened?” Colin responded.

“We just had an accident.”

Slowly the boys began to regain their senses. Brian unbuckled(解开) his seat belt and stepped outside to assess the damage. It looked as if the entire left side of the car were one big dent(凹陷). The windows on the driver’s side were in a thousand pieces, and the doors were crunched. Soon the police arrived and surveyed the scene. The police dealt with the accident quickly, then they let all people leave and go back on their way.

The fair was unthinkable under the circumstances. Brain thought it’s best to get Colin home safe before making the journey to his own house. When they reached Colin’s house, Colin climbed out of the car and wished his shaken friend luck.

“Be honest to your parents and don’t worry. It wasn’t your fault.” Colin said, trying to be upbeat.

“I know... I think. But it’s not going to be easy to break this to them. It’s their car.”Brian pointed the car in the direction of his house and drove.

In my free time, I like hiking challenges. It’s how I feed myself, physically, mentally, spiritually.

I looked over at my husband, Mike, and friends Emily and Jean, who’d joined me on this climb to the top of Nippletop Mountains. They were all fit, experienced hikers, though not as enthusiastic about it as me, Mike especially. He’s more of a tech guy.

We’d set off in the morning, dressed in layers against coldness. It took us just less than five hours to cover the five miles to the peak of Nippletop, with more snow and ice on the rocky trail the closer we got to the top. It was almost 1:30 pm now. We started to head down soon before it got dark.

A friendly young hiker waved to us. “Hey, want me to take your picture?”

“Absolutely!”

Mike gave the hiker his phone. That hiker snapped a few pictures for us.

We continued. I said, “I want to take a different trail so as to save time. It’s steeper (陡峭) but shorter.”

I led the way. They followed me with some distance apart. Carefully I sidestepped down the slope. A quarter mile down, I stopped and looked up the trail for the others. I couldn’t see them. Then a scream broke the quietness. Mike! He sprawled (瘫坐) on a steep, narrow, wooded part of the trail, about 100 feet ahead of me. Ice everywhere. His hands were holding his right leg tightly.

I shouted, “What happened?”

“I slipped on the ice,” he said. “Then I heard this crack. It hurts badly!”

Moments later, we got to Mike. “What should we do?” I asked. Jean checked Mike’s ankle. “We need to splint (夹板) it,” she said.

We fixed a hiking pole to Mike’s leg. What now? There was no way the three of us women could carry him down this mountain.

I pulled out my cell phone and called 911. Nothing. No signal. It was the same with the other three phones.

”Can I help?” It was the guy who’d taken our picture at the mountain top.
