1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a bright spring afternoon along the coast, and Jonathan Bauer, 51 and his 13-year-old daughter, Ava, were taking full advantage of it. They were driving with the windows down as they headed home on the 1.4-mile, two-lane Route 90 bridge, which crosses the shallow waters of the bay. Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the loud noise of tires.

Not far ahead of them, a black pickup truck was skidding (打滑) from one lane to the other. To Bauer’s horror, it crashed into a concrete barrier, spun like a top, flipped over the SUV directly ahead of them, and came to rest hanging over the railing of the bridge. Bauer hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path, but a BMW car that had hit into the guardrail on the right, came sliding backward towards him. He turned left, but too late — the BMW struck his car’s fender (保险杠) before crashing into the vehicle behind him.

Bauer stopped the car. “Ava, are you OK?” he asked. She was shaken, but otherwise unhurt.

He ran to the BMW. “Are you OK?” he asked the driver. She nodded, too shocked to speak.

And then a shout. It came from the pickup truck, which had come to rest on its right side. The back passenger compartment (车厢隔间) and truck bed were hung out past the guardrail, 30 or more feet above the waters of the bay. The driver’s door was open and a man climbed out. He dropped to the ground, then storming to the railing. Bauer ran up beside him. The man pointed down. In the water was a car seat. Next to it, a girl, about two years old, was terrified, floating on her back, and screaming.

From around the truck, its other passengers who had gotten clear of the compartment were looking down into the water.

Matters quickly went from bad to frightening when the girl rolled over onto her stomach. Bauer waited for the pickup truck driver to do something, but he didn’t. Maybe he was in shock.

4 . Air-crash investigators (空难调查员) Larry Vance and Anthony Brickhouse have details from certain jobs rooted in their memories. They could tell exact dates, locations, and fight numbers effortlessly Vance’s “big one” is Swiss Air Flight 11 in 1998. He was put in the position of dealing with all the families from very early on, many of whom held the hope that their relatives could have survived. All 229 passengers and crew died. Burning fabric; burning flesh. The smell catches in your throat, and stays in your mind long after you’ve left the scene. Investigations can take anywhere from days to years.

What can affect people in these jobs is the ongoing emotional damage, said Vivien Lee, a psychologist. But mental health assistance is often lacking within the industry. Evidence suggests that investigators, like first responders, can suffer from negative emotional effects, including frequent thoughts and PTSD (创伤后应激障碍) .

“One emotion of losing relatives is anger,” Brickhouse reflected. “And they’re looking to you to figure out what happened to their loved ones.” Depending on the size of the crash, that anger can come alongside a lot of international media attention.

But more often, Vance said, the questions he faces are perhaps even tougher to answer than what caused the crash. “How did my loved one die? What were they feeling? What were they seeing?” And tougher still: “Were they suffering?”

Listening to the black box recordings takes an emotional damage. He said it was more unbearable by knowing that he’s listening to the final minutes of someone’s life. Some people in his industry listen to a black box recording once and choose to never do it again, he said.

The knowledge that they’re doing an essential job can make the tougher aspects of the work a little easier. “The end result of your work is that you try to make the world a safer place, so that this doesn’t happen to somebody else,” Vance said.

1. What can be inferred about the air-crash investigators?
A.They often get throat problems.B.They must have good memories.
C.They experienced the same accident.D.They have to deal with many difficulties.
2. What should be done to help the air-crash investigators?
A.Helping them avoid air crashes.B.Sending first respondents with them.
C.Offering qualified psychologists.D.Teaching them how to communicate.
3. What is the most difficult part in Vance’s job?
A.Finding the black box.B.Answering the questions.
C.Smelling the burning things.D.Investigating the cause of the crash.
4. Which word can be used to describe the air-crash investigators?
A.Generous.B.Easy-going.C.Self-giving.D.Independent.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a very cold morning as it had been raining very heavily the previous night. As my mother was feeling a little under the weather, my sister volunteered to drive me to school. I had overslept and as a result, was running a bit late for school. We got into the car hurriedly. The road was already crowded with traffic. It appeared that everyone was late as well.

My sister was a careful driver and despite the fact that I was already late, she refused to drive fast on the slippery road. I was lucky she was such a resolute and careful person because a few hundred meters away from the school, we witnessed a tragic accident. It all happened very quickly, as most accidents do. A car full of school children had made a left turning without signaling and as a result, a school bus crashed into it. A few cars behind the school bus rammed into the bus as they could not brake in time and soon it became a pile-up. The already crowded road became jammed with vehicles that came to a crawl. I told my sister that I wanted to help the victims and she nodded silently. She stopped the car not too far from the accident spot.

The scene that greeted us was something I would never forget. It left an unforgettable memory in my mind to date. The impact of the accident had made the school children seriously injured in the car. The driver, a lady, lay on the steering wheel. I rushed to the children who were preschoolers. Two of them were seriously hurt and bleeding from the heads and hands. They were conscious although too weak to realize what had happened. In the meantime, passers-by had called the ambulance and while waiting we tried as best as possible to help the victims.

Brady was a recently retired search and rescue dog. He was not happy and missed his owner Al because Al had gone out on a rescue mission without him. Al’s nephew Steve took Brady along when he and his friend Zach went on an overnight hike. But suddenly Steve and Zach smelled something burning and they realized that the lightning had set the woods on fire. Wind-blown flame had leaped from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer had turned the forest into a tinderbox(火绒盒), and the thunderstorm wasn’t helping much. It had more wind and lightning than rain. Zach pulled Steve’s arm. “Let’s go! We can make it back to the river we crossed today.” Steve snapped Brady’s leash to his collar, and their heads down against the strong fire-wind, they hurried down the trail they had followed earlier. The air was full of smoke, and pine branches snapped from burning trees with a cannon-like sound. Steven kept his eyes fixed on the trail. All they had to do was to make it down to the river.

Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead of them lay a dense curtain of smoke across the trail. They’d never make it through, so they’d have to find another escape route. The dog was pulling at his leash, trying to draw them away from the smoke. This was what Brady was trained to do, and yet Steve was uneasy. It seemed to him they were moving away from the river.

Brady lifted his head and smelled the smoke-laden wind. Next moment, the dog ran away and disappeared. The boys yelled and shouted for him, but he didn’t come back.

They had no choice but to leave him behind. They went up a slope(斜坡). They couldn’t blame Brady for panicking and escaping. They themselves wanted to run even though they didn’t have a clue which way. They hadn’t gone far when there was a familiar back, and Brady came running toward them.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Flying now has become a necessary routine these days, what once seemed to be a marvel that changed how we travel and what distances we can cover in a matter of hours. Our family shared this mood when we were boarding our flight early Thursday morning.

My mother, elder brother and I planned to fly to Hawaii and spent a few sunny days there. We took our seats in rear emergency isle of the Airbus A321 plane, while people on board were busy packing their belongings and getting ready for the flight. Soon after taking off, there was a troubling sound in the plane. People in the front seats started screaming and someone shouted “birds! birds!”. The plane began rocking from side to side in an unusual pattern. I saw one of the flight attendants terrified, while restrained, the expression on face who sat in the same emergency isle as we did. My mother grabbed my hand and my brother became stiff and unresponsive. It was unusual to see so many people being scared and confused at once, everybody looking around in search of what might be going on. A moment later I felt a strong smell of something burning, and apparently somebody even started to cough. People at the front rows screamed that they see fire coming out of the left engine.

Suddenly, the chaos in the cabin was interrupted by the captain informing the passengers that a flock of birds collided with the plane during the take-off. Apparently, the damage was severe and the plane would not be able to turn around and land at the airport. My mother grabbed my hand and reached for brother’s hand as well. A deep sense of fear and realization of a potential disaster descended on everyone on board. Flight attendants rushed to check if everyone was still buckled up and in a proper position.

Saved by the Belt

My family is one of the lucky ones. We still have what we consider most precious — each other. It is Kathy Hezlep, our superstar, that has saved our family. Sitting at the porch, I am transported to the accident ten years ago.

As a mother, I have been blessed. I have a nice, smart, good-looking son who has given me much pleasure over the years. In the months leading up to Alan’s 16th birthday, there was a lot of excitement about his upcoming rite (仪式)of passage — the driver’s license.

About a month before his birthday, there was an assembly about seat-belt safety presented at his high school. One of the presenters in this program, Kathy Hezlep, had lost her son in a horrible car crash the year before. When Kathy was first asked to speak at this assembly, she was reluctant. Her son’s death had been extremely hard on her. She often felt helpless and discouraged, and she wasn’t sure how she could make a difference by speaking with this group.

But the school had convinced her to talk to the students. Kathy spoke about how hard it had been since the loss of her son. There were days when it was an effort just to get out of bed. She spoke directly from her heart and my son took her words straight into his heart. I remember Alan coming home that day and the two of us talking about the crash. We thought it was interesting that she was a single mother(like me)and that her son, Ryan, was her only child(like Alan).

Well, the big day finally arrived. The state of Florida, in its infinite wisdom, granted my “ child ” a license to take a loaded weapon and drive it! At the time, I thought the worst feeling I could possibly experience was watching my only child drive off alone in my car. I was wrong.

Alan had his license one week when the police called me that Alan had an accident with his friends.
