One cloudy day, Joe and his son, Joey, who was six, were polishing off sandwiches at a wildlife refuge. The father planned for the two of them to spend the day canoeing (划独木舟) in the huge swamp.

Joe had never ventured into the muddy waters before, which were famous for alligators (鳄鱼). He had researched what to do if they encountered one—just in case—bang the paddle against the boat to scare it off.

Joe was at the canoe rental counter, less than 6m from the water’s edge, when he heard a splash and a scream. Joey had slipped on long and soft grass at the edge of the water and fallen into the water. When Joe whipped around, he saw an alligator which was estimated to be at least 2.4m long and close to 90kg was about to attack.

Time seemed to stop as Joe ran toward his son and into the water, which was almost a meter deep. As Joey moved violently and screamed, Joe wrapped his left arm across the boy’s chest and began pulling him back toward the bank. With his right hand grabbing a paddle, Joe tried to scare off the alligator as hard as he could and it was like punching bricks. But the alligator didn’t even make a tiny step backward.

As the late afternoon sun beat down on his farm last May, Brandon Leseberg finished feeding his cows and decided to go back home. As they often did, his two sons, Louie, 6 and Everett, 3, had followed along. To have a drink, Louie stepped on a well with a covering which is easily broken.

Brandon had just finished locking the gate when he turned around and saw only his youngest son.

“Where’s Louie?” he shouted.

“He fell in the hole!” Everett said.

Brandon quickly realized what had happened. Noooo! He thought. Louie can not swim! He ran to the well and without thinking, jumped in.

As he fell some 70 feet down the well, Brandon hit the ice-cold water. He grabbed Louie, who was frightened, trying to stay afloat in water that was too deep for either of them to stand.

“All right, Dad, you can pull us out now,"Louie said.

If only it were that easy. Each second in the well meant a greater risk of hypothermia (低温症).

Looking up to see Everett’s face above the well, Brandon shouted, “Everett, you’re going to have to be a big boy and save us. Run to the road and get someone to help!”

About 15 minutes later, their neighbors, Christi and Mark Mackenny, were driving by when they noticed Everett alone by the side of the road, waving. They pulled over and asked if he was OK. “My daddy and Louie are in a hole.” he told them.

The couple drove onto the farm, and the boy pointed them to the well. Mark dialed 911 while Christi called another neighbor, Dan Athen.

After hearing from Christi, Dan ran to his barn (谷仓), grabbed a thick 85-foot rope and then with his son Ryan, 13, sped to Lesebergs’ farm. Eric Duncan, who works on Brandon’s farm, and his friend Jocob MaKenny also arrived to help.

Screen Saver

Rene Compean had hiked the park near his home in Southern California numerous times. But after venturing (敢于去) along a new path last April, the 45-year-old mechanic was lost.

As the day faded into dusk, following several hours of aimless wandering, his concern turned to fear. With no flashlight, only a liter of water and a power bar in his backpack, and less than ten percent battery remaining on his cell phone, Compean was unprepared for anything more than the two-hour journey he’d planned.

Compean climbed to a spot, some 7,000 feet above sea level, where he found at least one bar of signal. “SOS. My phone is going to die. I’m lost,” he texted a friend, attaching a photo showing where he was. The shot showed his legs hanging over rocks.

All Compean could do then was wait and hope. The temperature was dropping fast, and the winds were blowing. And he wouldn’t sleep. After spotting two mountain lions and a hear, he spent the night on high alert, keeping a big stick and some sharp rocks beside him in case an animal came close.

Sixty miles away in Ventura County, Ben Kuo was working at home when he read a tweet from the police station, showing a blurry   (模糊的) image of a man’s legs. The police search-and-rescue teams had spent the previous night unsuccessfully looking for Compean, so they released the photo to the public, hoping someone might know the location,

Kuo has an unusual hobby. “I have always loved looking for where photos are taken,” he says. He frequently tries to identify where movie scenes, television shows, or commercials were filmed. He’s often successful.

It was a bright May afternoon along the Maryland coast, and Jonathan Bauer, 51, an expert doctor at a hospital, and his 13-year-old daughter, Ava. were taking full advantage of his professional knowledge to help others. They were driving with the windows down as they headed home on the 1.4-mile-long, two-lane Route 90 bridge, which stretches across the shallow waters of Assa-woman Bay. Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the high sound of tires.

Not far ahead of them. a black pickup was sliding from one lane to the other. To the Bauers’ horror, it ran into a concrete barrier, turned over the SUV directly ahead of them, and came to rest hanging over the railing(栏杆) of the bridge. Bauer hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path.

Bauer stopped the car. “Ava, are you OK?” he asked. She was shaken, but otherwise unhurt.

And then a scream. It came from the pickup. The driver’s door threw open and a man climbed out. He dropped to the ground, then ran to the railing. Bauer ran up beside him. Fhe span pointed down, saying something in Spanish. In the water was a car seat. Fastened to it, a girl, abort two years old. looked terrified, floating on her back, kicking, and splashing and streaming.

Matters quickly went from bad to-frightening when the girl rolled over onto her stomach. Bauer waited for the pickup driver to-do-something, but he didn’t move. Maybe he was in shock.

65-year-old Mr. Fairfax had retired from teaching. He was very interested in adventure. This time he made an adventure on a sparsely (稀少地) populated land. In the cold winter, he tried a new place and forgot to bring his cell phone, the only time on the trip. He trekked (艰苦跋涉) more than half an mile with two dogs to a harvested wheat field.

With his dark staring eyes at the horizon in expectation of another rabbit, Mr. Fairfax stepped on the thin snow on a canal. Suddenly, it collapsed (坍塌) and dropped him four feet to the bottom.

Realizing that he was in trouble and was going to hurt himself, Mr. Fairfax was suddenly picking up a lot of speed. His left leg hit first, and he lay on his side to reach for his shotgun, unloaded it and used it as a crutch (拐杖). He spent an hour and a half climbing the canal but slipped and slid back down when he was partly up. This time, one of his feet got fixed between two rocks. Mr. Fairfax told himself that if he didn’t get himself out of that canal, he wasn’t going to have a very good night.

Mr. Fairfax walked his foot free and climbed more slowly and cautiously out of the canal. He immediately realized the difficulty of the task before him. The accident occurred about 2 p.m., and it was nearing 5 p.m. with the road far away as the sun was setting.

Mr. Fairfax focused on crawling to safety. Even with his gun supporting him, hopping was impractical. Instead, he sat down and pushed himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his good leg. He was determined and sure that he must hold on. He was in exhaustion and had more frequent breaks. Temperatures dropped overnight, and his gloves and boots got wet. His hands and feet soon were completely numb.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was the 9th of January, a day I will remember for a long time. It was a normal Sunday morning around 8:30 am, right on time for Sammy’s morning walk. I didn’t walk because of my lameness, so I rode in my power wheelchair. We got out the door and made our way toward a property near my apartment complex. We got to the gate and out of the complex, and we went left onto the extra wide sidewalk. It was about a mile’s walk one way , passing a firehouse on the right side of the road, before we turned around and started back.

Along the path we took was a large plate over the sidewalk. I passed over it the first time without any problems. My wheelchair could reach up to 8 miles per hour, but we went a little slower on our walks, around 2 miles per hour,   so Sammy could keep up. Even so, this speed was pretty fast for a 15-year-old dog.

As we turned around and made our way back, I went over the sidewalk plate again except that this time it was moved without me realizing it, putting my wheelchair in the grass on the embankment (路堤). The next thing I knew, my wheelchair started to tip over, throwing me out of the chair and rolling down the embankment into the muddy water below.

My right leg was hurt, and I was unable to pull myself upright. I was too weak to gather my strength to call for help. The muddy water was cold and I felt it hard to breathe with my body folded and twisted in a strange position. Meanwhile, Sammy was sitting up on the sidewalk with his leash (牵狗皮带) caught under the tipped over wheelchair. I heard him barking louder than ever heard. He knew I was hurt and was in danger.

By the way my wheelchair tipped over, a passerby on the street would not be able to see it from the road. All anyone could see was a dog barking on the sidewalk almost night across the street from the firehouse.

I could tell Sammy was trying to help me.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“If mum finds out that I’m going to the beach, I’ll be in big trouble.” I said to myself softly in a low voice.  I went downstairs slowly and tried to walk quietly out of the house. As I was heading towards the back door, Mum asked “Where are you going?” I answered without hesitation, “I am going to the garden to play.” After I got out of the house, I breathed a sigh of relief(松了口气) and ran toward the bus stop at top speed. Half an hour later, I was at the beach playing volleyball happily with my friends, Jim and Bob. Nearby two young men were racing in the canoes(独木舟). Suddenly, Bob hit the ball too hard and the ball fell into the sea. Just as Bob was going to pick up the ball. A wave came in and carried the ball further and further away from the shore. I wanted to show off my swimming skills so I volunteered to help get the ball. I dived into the water and started swimming towards the ball. After swimming for about ten minutes, I became tired but when I saw the ball was only a few feet away from me, I put in an extra burst of speed. “Oh, no!” Another big wave swept the ball further away from me. Just at that moment, I found my feet got tangled(缠绕) by a string of weed(水草) and I couldn’t swim properly.

注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为80左右;
2. 续写部分为一个段落,开头语已为你写好;
I struggled to keep myself above the water but it was no use.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章主要介绍1915年沉没的极地探险船“耐力号”在南极洲最北端的威德尔海底被发现。

10 . In the fall of 1915, polar explorer Ernest Shackleton’s ship Endurance (耐力号) sank off the coast of Antarctica. While all of the expedition’s 28 crew eventually were rescued, the ship’s final resting place has remained a much-discussed maritime mystery. That is, until today. A team of researchers has announced they’ve located the wreck at the bottom of the Weddell Sea, almost the northernmost part of Antarctica.

Endurance was backed by the British government and private donors and supported by Winston Churchill to deliver a group of explorers to the coast of Antarctica and then travel overland across the continent via the South Pole.

It set out from South Georgia on December 5, 1914, shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. But the enemy that Shackleton and his men faced was of a different sort. The Weddell Sea, covering an area of more than a million square miles, is one of the most remote and unforgiving environments in the world, littered with icebergs and roiled by strong surface winds. Shackleton called it “the worst sea in the world.”

The expedition made good progress at first, but as the Antarctic winter of 1915 closed in, the men found themselves trapped in the sea ice on Tuesday, October 26. The next day, the men removed tools, instruments, and provisions and set up camp on the ice floe. Endurance finally sank on November 27. Shackleton famously said, “What the ice gets, the ice keeps.” . But Endurance’s story did not end with the ship’s sinking.

In 2019, the Falklands Heritage Maritime Trust began its first expedition to find the ship but had been unable to locate the wreck. This winter, they tried again, organizing and funding Endurance22.

One of the toughest problems, besides the sea ice, was establishing the ship’s location. After Endurance was initially trapped in the ice, it continued to drift as the floes moved with the current. Due to poor visibility on the day the men abandoned the ship, however, the captain had been unable to take proper measurements that would help calculate the direction and speed of the floes.

1. Which can show the positions of Weddell Sea and Antarctica?
A.B.
C.D.
2. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Endurance hasn’t been found since the fall of 1915.
B.Endurance was only supported by Winston Churchill.
C.Ernest Shackleton died and sank off the coast of Antarctica in the fall of 1915.
D.Ernest Shackleton’s goal was to travel across the Antarctica via the South Pole.
3. What is the fundamental cause of the disaster according to the passage?
A.The sea ice.
B.The Antarctic winter.
C.The things they carried.
D.The captain’s unreasonable command.
4. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The way how to establish the ship’s location.
B.The reason why locating the ship is difficult.
C.The measurements that the captain took to locate the ship.
D.The time when Endurance22 was organized and funded.
