Lesia Cartelli was badly burned in a gas explosion at her grandparent’s house at age 9. In fact, the burns were so severe that her own grandfather didn’t recognize her. But now, this brave woman uses her injured past to help other burn victims find healing.

On that terrible day,Lesia and her cousin were playing in their grandparent’s basement. A gas leak caused the whole house to blow up. The explosion threw many of the 9 family members in the home across the street. Already a fighter,Lesia pulled herself out of the ruins. Flames still covered her little body,so she rolled in the dirt and snow to put them out.

“It was all face, hands, back and it had burned around my waist,”she says. Lesia’s own grandfather thought she was someone else because of how badly she was burned. As nursing staff loaded her into the ambulance, her grandfather tried to leave. He thought the house ruins still held his granddaughter’s body. Even though Lesia was right in front of him,he didn’t realize it was the same child.

Catching a glimpse of her reflection in the ambulance window helped Lesia understand why her grandfather didn’t recognize her. Burns covered 50%of her body and fire burned off all her hair.

Lesia spent several months in the hospital, undergoing surgeries and skin grafts(移植). Once released,Lesia’s scars(疤)drew stares and questions from people. so she started isolating herself.

“When I was burned, everything in my life changed,”she said. “My friendships changed. I hated going to schoo1. You are coping with things you never had to cope with before. People staring at you. People asking questions. Why do you look like that?”

Lesia could have remained isolated her whole life. When bad things happen,we can always choose to move backwards or to let God give our pain purpose. Lesia chose the latter, realizing she was put on this Earth to do more than just survive.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It’s the Saturday, 1:00 am, and Stormy, my dog, and I were going on a pre-dawn bird-watching adventure. The weatherman predicted fog, but as we hit the road, it’s clear. Along our journey, I stopped at a petrol station, ensuring Stormy was safely locked in the truck.

“Stormy, hang tight,” I whispered, stepping out into the night air.

Back on the highway, as we were near the marshlands, a heavy fog began to swallow everything. At a sharp bend, my truck hit soft ground, and I lost control. “Oh, no!” Panic set in as the vehicle slid off the road with a bang, falling down a steep bank and into the water.

In the strange silence that followed, I was floating inside the car, gently carried downstream by the canal. “Come on, door,” I said, switching uselessly at the handle. It won’t move; the electrical system had shorted out due to the water. “I’ve got a glass breaker,” I reminded myself, reaching for the tool in the center part.

With each failed attempt to break the window — the glass bouncing back at me — I felt a growing sense of urgency. Water moved over the floorboards, cooling my feet. “Stormy, stay calm,” I said, lying down to kick at the window with all my strength. But my efforts only met resistance.

As the water level rose threateningly close to the ceiling, fear clawed at my heart. In a last effort, I dived behind the seat for my toolbox. “Got to find something solid.” My hands brushed against the cold metal toolbox, then the fire extinguisher (灭火器). “This might work.”

“Here goes everything,” I thought, holding the extinguisher and hitting it against the window. The impact resounded through the car, but the glass holds firm. “Not yet,” I begged under my breath, as the extinguisher bounced harmlessly away.

The water kept rising, and so did my fear. A voice inside me screamed to give up, but another thought pierced through — Stormy. “For Stormy, I can’t quit.” Just then, I sensed a pause in the water’s rise.

An unspoken sound said, “You have more time. What will you do?”

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了29岁的杰森·沃诺克(Jason Warnock)在汽车事故中英勇救人的故事。

9 . In a close-up (特写), one man is pulling the other with all his strength through the window of an SUV, a type of vehicle, which is stuck dangerously on a cliff (悬崖) 30 feet above a busy roadway.

Jason Warnock, then 29, is the man performing the life-saving action. He was driving in Lewiston, Idaho, in April 2015 when he came upon a fallen tree in the middle of the road. “I was like, ‘What happened’?” he told a news website. Warnock stretched out his neck to stare up the side of a cliff. At the very top, where the tree should have been, was an SUV swinging on the edge, held back from falling to the road by a delicate, heavily damaged chain-link fence. Looking inside the car, Warnock could see a panicked Matthew Sitko, 23, beating on the passenger-side window.

That’s when Warnock sprang into action. He crossed a nearby footbridge, and climbed up the cliff to get to the vehicle. When Warnock got to the car, he tried breaking the window with a tool he had on him, only to realize that his cracking was shaking the car and might cause it to slip down the hill. He stopped and turned to calming Sitko enough to get him to open the window. “Give me your hand,” Warnock said. “If this thing goes, I want to have a hold of you so I can at least get you out of there.” Before reaching for the lifeline, Sitko had one request: “Can I grab my phone?” Soon enough, Warnock had freed both man and his machine.

According to the Lewiston police chief, the accident was caused when Sitko, who suffered only minor injuries, lost control of his car. For his part, Warnock insisted he came to Sitko’s aid for one simple reason: “I just did what anyone would do.”

1. Where was Matthew Sitko’s SUV when spotted?
A.On a cliff.B.By a river.
C.On the road.D.Under a tree.
2. Why did Warnock stop breaking the window?
A.His strength ran up.
B.His tool stopped functioning.
C.He worried about his own safety.
D.He realized the possible consequence.
3. What is the cause of the accident?
A.The SUV was beyond repair.B.The SUV was out of control.
C.Sitko was severely injured.D.Sitko was sleepy and tired.
4. Which of the following can best describe Warnock?
A.Calm but stubborn.B.Daring but anxious.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was driving home, northbound on a 6-lane highway. A pickup truck crashed into a car which was switching lanes. A huge accident, involving 5 other cars, unfolded in front of me.Immediately, I ran to a car which was upside down. I got someone to help by holding pressure on a big cut above the woman’s left ear, and then, with help, got her and a large, unconscious man, both upside down, out of the car. I then went to the four other cars to check if anyone else was hurt badly. Fortunately, no one else was in serious condition. It all took just a few minutes.

In the meantime, the southbound traffic had stopped. I looked over and saw a group of 12 people, out of their cars standing in a circle about 15 feet away from a young man, bloody and wounded, lying still on the pavement. I asked a couple of different people what had happened. The young man had gotten out of his car to cross the road and help, when a car drove along the inside lane, very fast, to get around the stopped traffic. The “Good Samaritan” was hit by the car, which launched him high in the air. He lay where he dropped. Everyone said he was dead; several had checked, But a feeling inside me said, “I didn’t check him. Can they be certain he is dead?”

He was covered in blood with arms and legs hurt and his head almost to his chest. I felt for pulses(脉搏) at different spots and felt nothing. Then I checked him once again. I realized at that moment, I was feeling for a normal pulse. When I felt again with this in mind. I thought I felt a very weak and rapid heart rate of about 160. I knew I was not supposed to move his head, but I saw no other way to hopefully open his airway. I pushed his chin(下巴) upwards. He then started taking rapid, shallow breaths.
