2 . Searchers announced the recovery of one of the two black boxes, and human tissue (组织) debris from the crash site of China Eastern Airlines flight MU5735 on Wednesday night, three days after the Boeing 737-800 nosedived from cruising altitude and crashed into a forested hillside.

One of the black boxes found on Wednesday has been identified as the cockpit voice recorder (驾驶舱话音记录器). The black box’s recorder looks badly damaged from the outside, but its storage unit looks relatively intact. It has been sent to a professional civil aviation agency in Beijing for decoding, and hopefully the data stored inside will provide evidence for the accident investigation and help produce a credible accident analysis report. The search teams are going all out to find the other black box with professional tools.

Officials also released more information concerning the crash. The weather on the route of MU5735 was suitable for flying and there was no hazardous weather when the plane crashed. The communication connection between the plane and the ground was normal from the plane’s departure until its sudden fall in altitude. The plane started service in June 2015 and it had been maintained under strict standards of technical plans and in normal conditions. Before departure, the aircraft met the requirements for flying. Pilots on board were all in good health and their flying certificates were within the validity period.

Beijing EAPs Consulting, a firm which provided a free psychological services hotline immediately after the crash, told Global Times that it has answered many phone calls asking for assistance. The phone calls are from families, friends and colleagues of people on board, who are in a difficult time. Some pilots and flight attendants called in because they feel unsafe and uncertain about their careers. There are also people who want to know how to comfort their acquaintances that had loved ones on the plane. Mental support and psychological services in the first 24 to 72 hours after a tragedy is crucial for people involved to recover from the tragedy and minimize the trauma. 3 . Air-crash investigators (空难调查员) Larry Vance and Anthony Brickhouse have details from certain jobs rooted in their memories. They could tell exact dates, locations, and fight numbers effortlessly Vance’s “big one” is Swiss Air Flight 11 in 1998. He was put in the position of dealing with all the families from very early on, many of whom held the hope that their relatives could have survived. All 229 passengers and crew died. Burning fabric; burning flesh. The smell catches in your throat, and stays in your mind long after you’ve left the scene. Investigations can take anywhere from days to years.

What can affect people in these jobs is the ongoing emotional damage, said Vivien Lee, a psychologist. But mental health assistance is often lacking within the industry. Evidence suggests that investigators, like first responders, can suffer from negative emotional effects, including frequent thoughts and PTSD (创伤后应激障碍) .

“One emotion of losing relatives is anger,” Brickhouse reflected. “And they’re looking to you to figure out what happened to their loved ones.” Depending on the size of the crash, that anger can come alongside a lot of international media attention.

But more often, Vance said, the questions he faces are perhaps even tougher to answer than what caused the crash. “How did my loved one die? What were they feeling? What were they seeing?” And tougher still: “Were they suffering?”

Listening to the black box recordings takes an emotional damage. He said it was more unbearable by knowing that he’s listening to the final minutes of someone’s life. Some people in his industry listen to a black box recording once and choose to never do it again, he said.

The knowledge that they’re doing an essential job can make the tougher aspects of the work a little easier. “The end result of your work is that you try to make the world a safer place, so that this doesn’t happen to somebody else,” Vance said.

6 . Around 126, 000 gallons of oil have spilled into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Orange County. The oil spill covers about 34 square kilometers of ocean.

To find the leak (裂缝、泄漏), many divers explored underwater. They found a break in a 28-kilometer pipeline (输油管道) that delivers oil off the California coast. Amplify Energy Corp. (AEC) is the oil company that owns the pipeline. It shut down the pipeline on Saturday, but experts say the company should have noticed a change in the pipeline’s pressure much sooner. The leaking pipeline is over 40 years old, even though such pipelines are normally only used for about 25 years.

Locals have said that even though the spill began on Friday night, little action was taken to contain it until Saturday afternoon. Some visitors to nearby beaches report that there is oil everywhere. Martyn Willsher, who leads Amplify, believes the leak has been stopped. “There is no active leak that we’re aware of,” he said.

Now beaches in the area have been closed, and fishing has been banned in a wide area along the coast. People are being asked to stay away from the beaches, since the oil can be poisonous.

Extra efforts are being made to keep the oil away from protected marshy (沼泽的) areas, along the coast, which are home to special wildlife. At least one of these areas, Talbert Marsh, has already been affected. Workers are trying to help animals that may have been hurt in the spill. It’s still not known exactly how many animals have been affected. But there are reports of dead fish and birds washing up on shore, and of dolphins swimming through the oily waters in the areas.

The US Coast Guard is leading efforts to place floating barriers called “booms” on the water to try to keep the spill from spreading.

7 . Harry Burleigh was reported missing on the evening of May 7 by his wife, Stacy, after he failed to return home from a camping trip in the Toketee area. Search and rescue crews from out of the area began looking for Burleigh on the morning of May 8. They found his vehicle near a lower trailhead that leads into Twin Lakes and determined the fisherman may have tried to walk to Twin Lakes to fish before heading home. His worried wife made signs and left food along the trails in hopes he would find them.

On May 16，they had a big break when searchers found a fishing box and makeshift（临 的） shelter. “They left him a note and lighter and told him to make a fire and they would be back in to get him tomorrow,” Stacey wrote on Facebook, “It took the team another 6 hours to get out.”

A week later, on May 23, rescuers discovered’ a second makeshift shelter southwest of the original one. The search crews called out to Burleigh who responded back. He was found to be 'walking and complaining of minor pain, but was in stable condition. Burleigh was examined at the hospital and reunited with his family that evening. “This wàs the outcome that we all have been looking for in this case,” said Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Brad O’Dell, “The Sheriff's Office wants to thank everyone who was involved in this mission.”

O’Dell said temperatures in the area got down into the 20s, and even snowed. “He told the searchers yesterday that he kept doing this 'one day at a time, one step at a time for love for his family and everything else,” O’Dell said, “So that mindset, that winning mindset, I think played a big role.”

9 . The waterfall was coming. Curtis Newman, his wife Krystal Ramirez and his 13-year-old son Hunter thought they would jump out of their small boat into the water. But this year was different. Heavy snow and spring rains had turned the usually controllable waterfall into something fierce (凶猛的). As they approached the waterfall late on the afternoon of the third day of their camping trip, Newman could tell from the increasing roar of water in the narrow canyon (峡谷) that they were in trouble. There was no way they’d be able to move down the rocks on either side of the waterfall.

There was no cell phone service, and they hadn’t seen a single person in the past three days. As he wondered what to do, Newman heard voices coming from the other side of the waterfall. “We have to get those people a message, he thought. He picked up a stick and pulled out his pocketknife to carve” Help on it. He tried tossing it over the waterfall, but it floated away in the wrong directions. Krystal reminded him that he had a pen and paper in his backpack (背包). Newman knew it was an impossible attempt, but he wrote “6-15-19 We are stuck here @ the waterfall. Help please” and put the note into a bottle. This time, he threw the bottle over the waterfall successfully.

It took them about 30 minutes to go back to the beach where they had lunch. By about 10: 30 pm, they pulled out their sleeping bags. Then, just after midnight, they heard a helicopter hovering (盘旋) above them. Newman turned to his son and started shaking him.

They got rescued. “The rescuers said that they had been performing these kinds of rescues, but no one had ever been rescued by a message in a bottle,” Newman said.
