Screen Saver

Rene Compean had hiked the park near his home in Southern California numerous times. But after venturing (敢于去) along a new path last April, the 45-year-old mechanic was lost.

As the day faded into dusk, following several hours of aimless wandering, his concern turned to fear. With no flashlight, only a liter of water and a power bar in his backpack, and less than ten percent battery remaining on his cell phone, Compean was unprepared for anything more than the two-hour journey he’d planned.

Compean climbed to a spot, some 7,000 feet above sea level, where he found at least one bar of signal. “SOS. My phone is going to die. I’m lost,” he texted a friend, attaching a photo showing where he was. The shot showed his legs hanging over rocks.

All Compean could do then was wait and hope. The temperature was dropping fast, and the winds were blowing. And he wouldn’t sleep. After spotting two mountain lions and a hear, he spent the night on high alert, keeping a big stick and some sharp rocks beside him in case an animal came close.

Sixty miles away in Ventura County, Ben Kuo was working at home when he read a tweet from the police station, showing a blurry   (模糊的) image of a man’s legs. The police search-and-rescue teams had spent the previous night unsuccessfully looking for Compean, so they released the photo to the public, hoping someone might know the location,

Kuo has an unusual hobby. “I have always loved looking for where photos are taken,” he says. He frequently tries to identify where movie scenes, television shows, or commercials were filmed. He’s often successful.

As the late afternoon sun beat down on his farm, Brandon finished feeding his cows, his two sons, Louie, 6, and Everett, 3, tagging along.

As they headed for the house, the two boys ran ahead of their father. Louie paused at a water spigot (水龙头) above an old well to relieve his thirst. Unluckily, the board covering the well failed to support his weight and Louie fell into the well. Brandon had just closed the gate when he turned around and saw only his younger son.

“Where’s Louie?” he shouted. "He fell in the hole!" Everett said.

Brandon, 37, quickly realized what had happened. Noooo! he thought. Louie can barely swim!

Instinctively, he jumped in. As he fell some 70 feet down the 24-inch-wide brick-lined well, Brandon heard Louie screaming. A moment later, Brandon hit the freezing water at the bottom of the well. He popped his head out of the water and grabbed Louie, who was panicked. Brandon lifted his son onto his chest as he tried to stay afloat in the water that was too deep for either of them to stand. Looking around, Brandon quickly realized there was only one way out. Looking up to see Everett peering down at them from the top of the well, Brandon shouted, “Everett, you’re going to have to be a big boy and save us. Run to the road and stand by the mailbox until someone stops. Tell them we need help.”

Everett did as he was told.

Five minutes. Ten minutes. Minutes passed like hours as Brandon, holding his shivering (颤抖的) son, continued to arch his back and brace his shoulders and legs against the well’s brick walls. Finally, Everett's face appeared above the well.

“Everett, did you get some help?”

“No.”

Brandon’s heart sank. “That’s OK, honey. But you have to go back out to the road and get someone to stop. OK, Everett?”

“OK, Daddy.”

As the late afternoon sun beat down on the farm last May, Brandon Leseberg finished feeding his cows and decided to call it a day. As they often did, his two sons, Louie, 6, and Everett, 3, followed him.

As they headed for the house, the two boys ran ahead of their father, who stopped to close the gate. Louie paused at a water tap atop an old well for some drink. Unknown to the Lesebergs, the board covering the well had worn and broken. When Louie stepped on it, it collapsed.

Brandon had just unlocked the gate when he turned around and saw only his youngest son.

“Where’s Louie?” he shouted.

“He fell in the hole!” Everett said.

Brandon quickly realized what had happened. Noooo! He thought. Louie can barely swim!

He ran to the well and heard Louie hitting the water below. Instinctively, he jumped in. As he fell down the well, Brandon heard Louie screaming. Somehow Brandon managed to grab onto a pipe that ran down the side of the well, which slowed him and kept him from crashing into his son.

Brandon hit the ice-cold water at the bottom of the well. He popped his head out of the water and grabbed Louie, who was panicked, trying to raise his son onto his chest, his body still partly submerged.

“All right, Dad, you can pull us out now,” Louie said.

If only it were that easy. There was only one way out. Looking up to see Everett peering down at them from the top of the well, Brandon shouted, “Everett, you’re going to have to be a big boy and save us. Run to the road and stand by the mailbox to get someone to stop. Tell them we need help. And Everett, stay off the road! OK, Everett?”

“OK, Daddy.”

Everett did as he was told.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。1915年,木制帆船“耐力号”被困在厚冰层中,后来沉没。后来名叫Endurance 22的搜寻小组宣布找到这艘船,并介绍了寻找它的方法。

6 . In 1914, Ernest Shackleton and his team left England in a wooden sailing ship called the Endurance, hoping to become the first to cross Antarctica.

But in 1915, the Endurance became trapped over the Weddell Sea. The ice destroyed the Endurance and later sank it. Shackleton and all of his men abandoned the ship and managed to stay alive. Although they failed to complete the expedition, the tale of their long and difficult return is one of the most famous survival stories of all time.

Much was known about the location of the Endurance. The ship’s captain kept accurate records of the ship’s position. The ship’s photographer even took pictures of it as it went down. But the ship, deep in the icy waters near Antarctica, had never been found.

Now, a search team called “Endurance22” located the ship, which was found 1.87 miles below the ocean’s surface, about four miles south of its last known position. The team reports that the ship is in excellent shape. Even though the ship is made of wood and is over 100 years old, it has survived with little damage. Scientists say that the small worms that normally break down wooden objects underwater don’t live in the cold waters around Antarctica.

The Endurance 22 is led by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust. The team ran the project from an icebreaking ship. To locate the Endurance, the team used two underwater robots called Sabertooths which can travel by themselves deep under the sea. What makes them unique is that they can travel under the ice and go where the ship can not. Once the ship was located, the Sabertooths used highquality cameras and scanners to record the Endurance in detail.

The Endurance 22 plans to create a digital 3D model of the wreck site, using the careful scans they made. This will allow scientists to study the ship in detail without disturbing it.

1. What can we know about Shackleton?
A.He built the Endurance by himself.B.He was also a famous photographer.
C.He had a tough journey back home.D.He crossed Antarctica by the Endurance.
2. What helped preserve “the Endurance” well?
A.Fine weather.B.Cold water.
C.Wood material.D.Unique structure.
3. What is special about the Sabertooths?
A.They can repair the ship.B.They can travel under the ice.
C.They can break ice on the sea.D.They can take pictures in detail.
4. How will the scientists deal with the discovered Endurance?
A.They will let it remain untouched.
B.They will rebuild it using 3D technology.
C.They will use scanners to record its details.
D.They will do research on creating a model.

8 . Fire Capt Kevin Lloyd arrived at the scene of a car accident in West Point, Utah, north of Salt Lake City. A pregnant woman and her screaming 2-year-old daughter were trapped in the car.

While his partner, Allen Hadley, was tending to the driver,Lloyd couldn’t get the frightened girl to calm down. He saw she was holding several bottles of nail polish, and then he had a better idea. He asked her if she wanted to paint his nails. Soon her eyes lit up. At the same time, Hadley showed up to check on the scene.

Lloyd had calmed her down and was in the process of getting his fingers painted. Then Hadley just put his hand in there. The girl began to color his nails pink. By this time, she was not only calm, but she was also happy.

The girl’s mother was not injured. She thanked them for helping her daughter feel better, and they all chuckled, looking at the nails, and took some photos.

The firefighters brought the photos back to the headquarters and showed them around. The department put them up on the social media, and thousands of people responded, with many thanking the firefighters for going out of their way to calm down a frightened girl.

Fire Chief Mark Becraft said he had been surprised at all the attention. He said he was proud of his firefighters, and added that he had known members of the department who had done many things that weren’t part of the job.

9 . 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One night, when I was in deep sleep, our neighbor from across the street fiercely knocked on our front door in a great hurry. She was screaming for us to open it. We ran to the door, and she said only one word as she took off running: “FIRE!”

Immediately we ran out just as the fire engines raced onto our street with their sirens(警报器) screaming. The fire was huge! Flames(火焰) were shooting wildly out of the windows and through the roof of the hundred-year-old, three-story house next door. The flames were so tall that they were visible a few miles away. Fire engines filled our entire street, from one end to the other, and even blocked the two cross streets.

My husband raced next door to be sure our neighbors had gotten out. All family members were outside and safe, including the dog. He ran to the houses on the other street that backed up to the house on fire and banged on those doors to be sure the neighbors were safe, too. They were. The air was thick with smoke, and it was hard to see and breathe as he came back down our street and arrived home.

We were almost grateful for COVID-19. Because of it, we were wearing our masks as we always did when we were outside. We sat outside watching the firefighters do the wonderful job that they did.

Our street was crowded with fire trucks, eleven in all. One engine had a monster light on it that made the street bright enough that it looked like it was high noon on a sunny day. The medical workers and ambulances also came in case they were needed. Thank goodness, they were not. Our house became kind of a “safe house” with our next-door neighbors coming and going, as needed. It was a safe place for their dog, too. We made sure she had plenty of water, and she stayed in the house with our dog.
