1 . From the ancient Chinese stories, to the stories in the medieval cathedrals(中世纪的教堂)in the west, it is perfectly clear that there is strong pleasure and meaning to gain from stories told through images or pictures. People are lucky enough to have had books with both pictures and words when they were children.    1    .

After the world wars, the cheap books without pictures were everywhere and it made reading books illustrated with pictures for adults a very luxurious thing. Somehow, pictures had also come to seem childish or strange.    2    Just as the ever-increasing popularity of the graphic novel(连环画小说)suggests, works both words and pictures are regarded as classics.

3    In fact the former develops from the latter. Early writing systems such as those in Egypt and China: things in the world were expressed in written form by drawing special pictures.       4    In some languages, the sound associated with an image are separated from its original meaning.

What is the use of a book without pictures? Very little, it turns out, particularly if we consider that pictures are buried within the very symbols used to write words. As for a picture book for adults, author Tokarczuk sweeps away all doubts. She adores the picture book.    5    This kind of story is able to get through to anyone – regardless of age, cultural differences or level of education. It’s hard to disagree.

A.Because it is hard to read books with pictures.
B.And yet readers love stories told through pictures.
C.However, words and pictures are not always connected.
D.Text and picture, after all, are not so far apart.
E.For her it is a powerful, old way of telling a story.
F.Adults are thought foolish to read such books.
G.They often remember the pictures as clearly as the words.

4 . I never saw daffodils (水仙花) in Gaza.     1     When I was walking in the gardens, a line from Wordsworth’s poem came to mind: And then my heart with pleasure fills,/And dances with the daffodils.

My father used to say, “English is a window looking over the world.” He specialised in English Language and Literature. At home lively debates would erupt about literature or philosophy.     2     I was born into a refugee (难民) family as my father and grandmother had to leave their motherland for Kuwait because of war decades ago. When I was 13, my family travelled to Gaza but we had to stay there as a war broke out in Kuwait. I became a refugee for the second time. However, my parents were determined that my education was of the greatest importance.     3

In the following years, I studied hard and finally worked as a research fellow to investigate the impact of conflict on health in the Middle East and North Africa. During this time, I attended an artistic workshop, which offered the skills to share my research findings through artistic media like poetry.     4     I didn’t find it difficult to write — I’d be walking along, and the lines just seemed to flow out of me.

5 . The Chinese version of the French book, Pourquoi les Chinois ont-ils le temps (Why Chinese People have Time), has been recently published by SDX Joint Publication Co. The author, Christine Cayol, who has lived in China for more than 20 years, shares her observations in her writing on Chinese wisdom towards "time".

In the western world, the concept of time is often measurable, which can date from the Industrial Revolution. This view of time always reminds people of progress, improvement and efficiency.

Unlike the western "race mode", the Chinese view of time is more like a "flowing water mode". In Cayol's eyes, Chinese people can become friends with time. "For the Chinese, time is neither a flying arrow at the target nor an hourglass measuring quicksand, but running water," she said. "Water can devour us, but it carries us and holds us as well; it seems weak, but is strong actually, and nothing can stop it from flowing into the sea."

Cayol used to be uncomfortable with the way Chinese dealt with time when she first came to China: They never make appointments, and always change the time for a meeting. However, as she became more familiar with Chinese culture, Chinese wisdom has been gradually understood by her.

Life in China led Cayol to experience a different view of time, which invites people to listen to their heart, to think and to love. Time in China seems to be internal, beneficial and cherished. It is life itself: It can be solid and liquid, fast and slow, hard and soft at the same time.

Now, Cayol likes spending five hours with friends making dumplings or noodles. She believes it's a way to get along with each other, and no one will measure the time it takes. "I'm not introducing a method; I just want to reveal a new view of time, which is completely different from that in the West. Adopting it will be just like using a foreign language - it gives us greater freedom in the modern world," Cayol said. She hopes that Pourquoi les Chinois ont-ils le temps can be a cure for Westerners' worried hearts.

6 . “Who loves pizza?” is a question you almost never have to an American. A better question might be “Who doesn’t love pizza?”   Now, there’s a place for all pizza lovers to gather: the Museum of Pizza. It can be found in America’s pizza capital—New York City.

A company called Nameless Network came up with the idea for the museum, known as “MoPi” for short. “It’s often that the simplest ideas are the best. The company used the popularity of pizza as a way to get people “looking at art and hearing about history in a different way,” said Alexandra Serio, who is with Nameless Network. Many kinds of artists were asked to create art works about pizza. They, in turn, provided large photographs, sculptures and huge installations. So far, the museum has had lots of visitors. More than 6,000 people came through the door when it opened this month.

Visitors seem to love MoPi’s bright colors, which makes it perfect for taking selfies and other photographs for social media.

Nene Raye, from New Jersey, was a recent visitor. Raye didn’t expect to see what she saw—and she was happy about that. “Honestly, I thought it would be, like, more of a traditional museum,” She said. But instead, Raye got some of everything. “So You get a little bit of education and then some fun, which I love,” she said.

Lydia Melendez made plans to visit the pizza museum in April. For her, the experience was worth the wait. “I thought it was going to be kind of boring,” she said. She had imagined walking in and finding books on how to make pizza. But she was very pleased when her actual experience was different than what she had imagined.

While pizza may be what has captured the interest of crowds, the point of the Museum has been to help people exposed to fine arts world.

7 . 阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

Poetry probably had its origins in     1     (tradition) folk music tens of thousands of years ago. In that era, there were no TVs     2     films, and writing had not been invented, so people would sit around the fire at night and sing songs     3     (entertain) themselves. These songs reflected themes from the people's daily lives, such as hunting animals and sowing crops. Since nothing     4     (write) down, over the years different versions of these songs developed, and each area would have its own respective rhythm. In addition     5     this, people would recite stories of past     6     (hero). As these stories were often quite long, they often had rhyme and rhythm to help people remember them more       7     (easy). These were no longer the works of amateurs     8     (sit) around a fire, but works of true poets     9     cared about their art and sometimes made     10     living from it.

8 . War has long been understood as men’s business. The memoirs of generals and front-line soldiers compete for shelf space with edited collections of letters from soldiers and military histories largely written by men. This book is a good reminder that it is not only men who experience wars, and it is not only men who report on them. War reporters such as the Sunday Times’ Marie Colvin, killed in Syria covering the siege of Homs in 2012, have brought the realities of war into our homes.

Mackrell’s lively book tells the stories of six of the female reporters who reported on the Second World War. Some, such as Martha Gellhom and Lee Miller, are well known, others, like Virginia Cowles and Helen Kirkpatrick, now less so. Clare Hollingworth, the only British war reporter included here, filed the first eyewitness account of the German invasion of Poland in 1939.

Mackrell also tells the story of the war through their writing. As France fell in the early summer of 1940, Cowles travelled to Paris. Her description of the mass escape from that city as Nazi troops approached—think of noise and confusion, of the thick smell of petrol, of shouts, curses and tears—is still a vivid reminder of the impact of war today.

The women whose lives and work are recorded here regularly put their lives in danger—perhaps none more so than Sigrid Schultz, whose reports from Berlin conveyed the horror of Hitler's rule to an American audience. In 1945 she returned, with fellow reporters Kirkpatrick and Ed Murrow, to report on the liberation of Buchenwald concentration camp. Mackrell reveals the full extent of the danger faced by Schultz only at the end of this book. Like the copy by her subject, it is an essential read.

1. What makes it special about the book?
A.It is a report of wars and their impacts.
B.It is a memoir of generals and front-line soldiers.
C.It is an edited collection of letters from soldiers.
D.It is a collection of stories about women war reporters.
2. What do we know about the female reporters?
A.Marie Colvin worked and died in the World War II.
B.Clare Hollingworth was the first to report the German invasion of Poland.
C.Cowles' detailed description of her travel reminded readers of the war.
D.Sigrid Schultz may often risk her life while doing her job in Berlin.
3. What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A.To advertise for a book about World War II.
B.To introduce a book about women reporters.
C.To provide guidance on becoming a good reporter.
D.To stress the importance of female reporter in history.
