Ann Walker(A tour guide in Chester): Close to the English and Welsh border(边界), the city of Chester has a long history. It’s filled with historic buildings, including some historic city walls in the country. For tourists this year, we have a new, free, self-guided tour that lines the city’s four main streets. Chester’s Rows are unique(独特的)in the world. Nobody is quite sure why they were built this way. |
Brian Clarke (A boat driver in Chester): I was born in the small village of Mancot, six miles from Chester, and once I moved here, I simply never wanted to leave. My favorite place in Chester is the tree-lined banks of the River Dee. Every day I walk along the beautiful river to Chester Boat Business. Chester Boat Business began in Chester over 100 years ago. I started as a boat driver in 1979 and have had a wonderful life. |
Katrina Kerr(An old lady in Chester): My husband and I moved to Chester in 1998. We really think it was a wise decision. Chester looks different from other cities -- so many black and white buildings. In summer it is busy with tourists and race-goers, and in winter, you can enjoy comedy clubs, jazz and Folk bars. Chester is right on the border with Wales, so for centuries, it has been a bit English and a bit Welsh. Now a new generation has started businesses in travel and finance(金融). And the city now is young and energetic. |

James Madison University (JMU) offers different languages to learn, from French to Ancient Greek and Italian. Spanish is one of the most useful languages to learn.
Spanish (西班牙语) is the second most spoken language in the world. Around 460 million speakers use it as the first language. It’s the official language of over 20 countries, and in the United States, there are 41 million speakers. Those facts give you the perfect reason to learn Spanish as an international language. One of the best reasons to learn Spanish is that one can make it more possible to find a job. There’s a place for Spanish in every career (生涯) field. Doctors will have patients that speak Spanish, traders will buy things from Latin American companies and reporters will provide news written in Spanish.
Spanish is known as the starting for learning other Romance languages. Many of the words and phrases used in Italian, French and Latin are similar to each other. For example, the Italian word for “thank you” is “grazie” and the Spanish word for “thank you” is “gracias”. The Portuguese (葡萄牙语) word for “hello” is “olá”, and the Spanish word for “hello” is “hola”.
There are so many amazing methods for learning Spanish. A popular method that most people use is the app Duolingo because it’s convenient and great. A similar method is listening to a podcast (播客), like Coffee Break Spanish that prepares for different Spanish levels. Neither of these can break the bank because they’re free (免费的).
JMU also offers chances to practice Spanish speaking. The Spanish Club meets every week to discuss culture, practice speaking Spanish and plan events. The Foreign Language Department organizes language tables where students can practice conversations in Spanish with other students. Signa Delta Pi is a Spanish honor society for students who study Spanish.

No doubt that teens should also care about the world that we live in. Martinez is one of the most active environmentalist among the young people. When most teens are busy with sports, friends, and online games, he is working to save the planet.
So how does a teenager become a well-known environmentalist? “I grew up in a family where people were always thinking about the environment,” says Martinez. When Martinez was just 6 years old, he decided he had to do something about climate (气候) change--a serious environmental problem. Scientists have been studying climate change for many years. They know that Earth’s climate changes on its own over time. But right now, it is changing more and more quickly than usual because of pollution created by people--by the cars, trucks and planes we ride in, and by the coal and oil we burn for electricity.
Martinez points out that climate change is a serious problem. “People may think they are helpless about climate change, like there is nothing they can do,” he says. But that is not true. “Humans caused climate change.” Martinez says. “And we can try to solve it.”
Martinez began looking for solutions (解决办法) when he was just a little kid. His elder brothers and sisters ran an environmental group called Earth Guardians, which was started by their mom. First, he listened when they had meetings. Soon, he was traveling around the country and the world. His goal? To educate and raise people up to face the “war” of climate change.
Today, Martinez runs Earth Guardians. The group works with thousands of kids around the world. He speaks to students in classrooms about steps they can take to help the planet. And he writes and performs hip-hop songs about the environment. Martinez believes that if many people change their habits, the climate change can be cut down.

C.To encourage people to protect the environment. | D.To introduce Martinez’s fight for our environment. |
In the doorway, I looked closely at the face of my 23-year-old son, Daniel. We were saying goodbye. In a few hours he would be flying to France. It was a transitional(过渡的) time in Daniel’s life, a passage from college into the adult world. I wanted to leave him some words that would have some meaning, some importance beyond the moment. But nothing came from my mouth. No sound broke the silence of my beachside home. I stood quiet, looking into the searching eyes of my son, which I knew was not the first time I had let such a moment pass.
When Daniel was five, I took him to the school bus stop on his first day of kindergarten(幼儿园), I felt the fear in my hand holding mine as the bus turned the corner. He looked at me—as he did now. “What is it going to be like, Dad? Can I do it? Will I be OK?” Then he walked up the bus steps and disappeared inside. The bus drove away, and I said nothing.
Ten years later, a similar scene played itself out. I drove him to college in Virginia. As I started to make the trip home, I tried to think of something to say to give him courage and confidence as he started this new period of life. I left, only mumbling(喃喃自语), “Hope everything goes better, Dan.”
I once told Daniel about my great regret that I didn’t take a year off to travel. Daniel thought about this. After graduation, he worked as a waiter, a bike messenger and a painter. Now he had enough money for Paris. The night before he left, I tossed and turned in bed. I was trying to find out something to say. Nothing came.
What does it matter over the course of lifetime if a father never tells a son what he really thinks of him? I knew that it did matter. Now, as I stood before Daniel, I finally gave him a hug. It was nothing. And yet, it was everything. I was sure he knew that.
27. The father stood quiet without talking to his son probably because ________.A.his son didn’t want to break the silence | B.his son left home hurriedly to travel alone |
C.he was a person not good at expressing himself | D.he thought it was unnecessary to say something |
