Have you ever made soup at home? I made it often, because I think it’s pretty ________ to do. One of my favourite soups to make is chicken tortilla (玉米薄饼) soup. It’s a kind of soup ________ has beans, chicken, and some other ingredients(原料).

Since I make the soup often, I know the recipe(配方) well and it ________ the same every time. But there was one time when I didn’t have one of the most important ingredients. I ________ to just make the soup without that ingredient anyway. I thought one ingredient wouldn’t make a big ________.

Paul was a very rich man, but he never spent any of his money. He wore dirty old clothes to hide his richness. People laughed at him, but he didn’t care. He only cared about his money.

One day, he hid all his gold in a hole by a tree. Every night, he went to the hole to look at his gold. He sat and thought. “No one will ever find my gold!” But a thief(小偷) saw everything. One day when Paul went home, the thief picked up the gold and ran away!

The next day, Paul went to look at his gold, but it wasn’t there! This made him sad. He cried so loudly that a wise old man heard him from far away. He came to help. Paul told him everything.

“Don’t worry.” he said. “Get a big stone and put it in the hole by the tree.” The old man said. “If you don’t use the gold at all, you can do the same thing with a stone.”

Katy is an actress, a runner, and a person who refuses to use the words “no” or “I can’t”.

She was born without the lower part of her legs and has worn prosthetic legs(假肢) all her life. She grew up in Alabama, US and had an active childhood. She feels lucky because her family has treated her the same way they would treat her brothers and sisters.

When a person is born without the legs, there are lots of things that are difficult to do. But Katy believes she can do anything. She chose to do two things that are difficult even with both legs.

As a teenager, she saw a movie that made a big impression(印象) on her. Before it was over, Katy had made her mind to be an actress.

She got a job in theater and then moved to Los Angeles, where she has played roles in theater, television and movies. She thinks that if you believe you can do this thing, you should go for it. So when Katy’s friend asked her whether she’d like to try running, she said “yes”. She was given a pair of running legs and started running.

Katy was the first person in the world with two prosthetic legs to take up running as a competitive sport. She made it to the 100-meter finals(决赛) in the 2012 London Paralympics(残奥会).

Katy’s family, friends and fans look up to her as an example of someone who has overcome(克服) difficulties and achieve her dreams.

Do you play with your phone before bedtime? You may want to read a book instead. According to a US study, looking at screens at night can cause us to sleep badly.

In the evening, our bodies make melatonin(褪黑素). Melatonin helps us feel sleepy and relaxed. It’s an important part of our sleep cycle(周期). Our electronic screens stop that cycle from working normally(正常地).

Why? Phones, computers and TVs make blue light. Blue light stops our bodies from making melatonin. Even just a little bit of blue light can have an effect(影响). Eight minutes of blue light can keep your brain “awake” for another hour, according to the study. Even if you fall asleep, you may have lots of dreams. Your brain won’t have a good rest.

It’s even worse if you play an exciting game before bedtime. Games make our hearts beat faster, so we have a harder time falling asleep. Then, when we fall asleep, we don’t get enough “deep sleep”.

Use these tips to get a good night’s sleep

*Have a relaxing time every night. Take a warm shower or read a book.

*Sleep in a dark, quiet room that is not too warm or too cold.

*Count sheep. It’s the oldest trick, and it can actually work!

*Don’t eat a big meal or drink coffee. Instead, drink milk.

*Don’t run or exercise three hours before bedtime.
