Karina is my best friend. When we first met in a camp, we both felt that we’d be friends forever. So it was hard to imagine that I would disagree with her on some things. Whatever we did, we were always together. And the more time we spent together, the more we realized how amazingly similar we were.
But then something happened in another summer camp. “Have you heard about the shopping-mall news?” asked one of our friends Levar. “They want to cut down some trees to make room for a shopping center.”
“That’s terrible!” I said. “We have to stop that.”
“I differ with you on that point,” said Karina. “My parents said the shopping center would make new jobs for people who really need work.”
“But think of all the birds that would lose their homes!” I said. “I want people to have jobs, but it doesn’t mean cutting down trees.”
“Don’t you think people’s jobs are more important?” Karina asked.
“Maybe two people with opposite points of view just aren’t meant to be friends,” I was thinking.
Just then, Levar jumped up and broke the silence. “Let’s see who can do the highest roundhouse kick (回旋踢)!”
Tyler took the challenge, Karina followed, and I finally joined them.
Even though I wished Karina had agreed with me about saving the trees, I realized she had her reasons to support what she did. No two people are exactly alike, and even best friends disagree sometimes. What’s important is that we should respect each other. A friendship is almost always worth keeping.
