On 12 May, 2008, a terrible earthquake happened in Sichuan Province. Lots of people lost their lives in the earthquake.
When the earthquake came, most people were at work or at school. Many children became trapped in their schools. The students in one class all luckily escaped (逃脱) the disaster, because they were having a PE lesson on the playground outside the teaching building. Only very few buildings did not come down because they had been very well built.
There are lots of moving stories about how the soldiers did their best to save those people buried (被埋的) in buildings and how lots of survivors helped other people get out of danger. A man teacher in his early fifties helped many of his students get out of danger, yet in the end he lost his own life. Another teacher who had helped all his students to the safe places lost his own feet. In the disaster, they showed us what deep love really means.
Many days after the earthquake, a 60-year-old woman who had been buried for a hundred and ninety-six hours was successfully saved. It is a wonder that she could survive. People from all over China donated money, clothes and food to support those survivors who greatly needed their help. Now, after some years’ rebuilding, the local people can hardly see any signs of the terrible earthquake in the disaster areas. Yet, in their memory, the terrible earthquake will always remain there.
