It is time for Mrs. Brown’ s class. Mrs. Brown asks her students a question: Do smartphones bring us closer together or drive (迫使) us further apart? The students show great interest in the discussion.
David:
I think smartphones drive us further apart. When you sit in a busy restaurant, watch the guests waiting for their meals.
Alice:
In my opinion, smartphones bring us closer together. When my family moved to Qingdao last year, I had to leave my friends in Nanjing. But smartphones help us keep in touch ( 保持联系).

It depends. Smartphones can bring us closer to people living far.

2 . Should kids be allowed to use mobile phones in school? There has been a lot of discussion about it. Without question, kids do not need mobile phones in school. Some people may feel that kids need phones for safety reasons; however, it’s not good or necessary for them to use mobile phones at school.
Firstly, there are phones in most modern classrooms nowadays. If kids need to call their parents or whatever, they can use one of the phones in the school. There is really no reason for students to have a phone with them.
Besides, mobile phones can be a big distraction (干扰) during the school day. If kids bring their phones to class and start to use them, they won’t pay much attention (注意力) to their schoolwork. Because there are too many games and apps on phones. They can pull kids’ attention away from things they should do at school. After all, there have been many other things that distract kids away from their lessons.
What’s worse, mobile phones can also be another way that kids bully (欺凌) each other. In some ways, kids are mean to each other in school. Phones would just be another way for mean-spirited kids to hurt others. Unluckily, a few kids always go out of their way to give others a hard time. And if mobile phones are allowed in school, it will give them one more tool to hurt others.
In a word, I cannot think of any good reasons why kids need to have mobile phones at school. Phones would just be a distraction and could lead to more bullying in school.

3 . Recently children have been told to buy traditional alarm clocks instead of mobile phones to wake them up in the morning. Schools will advise pupils to turn off mobile phones or iPads in the evening to have enough sleep.
Researchers from a charity say that using internet-connected devices (装置) in the evening can prevent children getting more rest. Moreover, they advise that school children should invest in a real alarm clock to make sure that they get a good night’s sleep and arrive at school on time.
① The study shows that 40% pupils in primary schools can now hardly get on well without these devices. About two-thirds of pupils have a habit of taking mobile phones to bed at night.
② The study also shows that girls are more interested in mobile phones than boys and often use the Internet to talk to friends by social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter. One girl aged 12 said “I have been told that I am addicted (上瘾的) to the Internet and like being online instead of being with other people.”
③ A girl of 13 told researchers “I can’t imagine (想象) if someone takes my iPad away. I walk around the house with it even though it’s not turned on. I just like being with it.” Another girl added “Sometimes I can’t sleep without using the mobile phone at night.”

Some parents complain that their children’s teachers are giving students homework on phones. It means they have to offer their children phones or can’t refuse their children’s request to use their phones. Some parents say children don’t usually finish their homework in time on phones. “Primary and high school students will not be allowed to bring phones to schools,” announced the Ministry of Education of China on Monday.
According to the notice, primary and high school students are required not to bring their phones into schools. If they do need to bring phones to schools, they have to ask their parents if they can first and come to schools with a written request from their parents.
The notice said that if the students bring their phones to schools, they have to hand their phones to teachers when they arrive. The phones will be kept together by the teachers. And they should not be allowed into classrooms.
There are some main points in the notice. Teachers are not allowed to give students homework on phones, and they are not allowed to ask students to finish their homework on phones, either.

Mobile phones have a bad influence on young Chinese students’ sleep and memory, according to a recent study.
